Thoothukudi District is one of the 38 districts of Tamil Nadu state in southern India. The district was formed by bifurcation of Tirunelveli district on 20 October 1986. Thoothukudi is the capital and the main town of the district. The district is known for pearl cultivation, with an abundance of pearls being found in the seas offshore. It was formerly ruled by one of the oldest kingdoms in India, the Pandyan Dynasty with the port of Korkai through which trade with Rome happened. The archaeological site at Adichanallur holds the remains of the ancient Tamil civilisation.

The Tuticorin Airport is a domestic airport located 16.9 km (10.5 mi) from Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, India serving the districts of Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Kanniyakumari in southern Tamil Nadu. It is located 15.6 km west from the city centre on Thoothukudi-Tirunelveli NH 7A. Tuticorin airport was inaugurated by the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J. Jayalalithaa on 30 April 1992 and the former Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Tourism M. O. H. Farook presided with her. The airport was ISO 9001:2015 quality certified on 13 April 2018. It is the fifth busiest airport in Tamil Nadu after Chennai, Coimbatore, Tiruchirappalli and Madurai.

Tamil Nadu Fisheries University

Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University (TNJFU) is the 20th university in Tamil Nadu, founded in 2012 in Nagapattinam, Nagapattinam district. It was established under Tamil Nadu Fisheries University Act, 2012. The Act was amended in 2014. It was renamed after the former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Dr. J. Jayalalithaa. The Department of Fisheries was started in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) during 1973. The Fisheries College, Thoothukudi was established in 1977 and the first batch of students for B.F.Sc., Programme were admitted. The Fisheries College was upgraded as Fisheries College and Research Institute (FCRI) during the year 1989. The Fisheries College and Research Institute (FCRI), Thoothukudi became a constituent Institute of Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS) with effect from 20 September 1989. Tamil Nadu Fisheries University (TNJFU) was established on 19 June 2012 with head quarters at Nagapattinam. In due course of time, the TNJFU have gained widespread recognition as University of excellence. It also has a engineering program named B.Tech Fisheries Engineering first of its kind in India.

Thoothukudi violence

Thoothukudi Massacre denotes events that took place on 22 and 23 May 2018 in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, India. The violence took place during an ongoing protest against proposed expansion of a copper smelter plant run by Sterlite Corporation in Thoothukudi town. Police opened fire on the protesters, killed 13 people and left 102 injured. Several policemen were also injured during the protests.
