Throwback Throwdown II was the second annual Throwback Throwdown professional wrestling event produced by Impact Wrestling that aired on Impact Plus and YouTube. It took place on December 18, 2021, at Davis Arena in Louisville, Kentucky, the home base of Impact's developmental territory Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), whose talent was also featured on the card.

Contents

This was the final in-ring appearance for Impact for Rohit Raju, who left the company at the end of the year.

Production

Background

The first Throwback Throwdown was a special episode of Impact that aired on November 26, 2019, and saw wrestlers portraying 1980's characters and gimmicks in the fictional Impact Provincial Wrestling Federation (IPWF). [1] [2] On November 20, 2021, at Turning Point, Impact announced that Throwback Throwdown II would be held at Davis Arena in Louisville, Kentucky on December 18, 2021, as an Impact Plus Monthly Special. [3] [4]

Storylines

The event featured several professional wrestling matches, and wrestlers portray heroes, villains, or less distinguishable characters. [5] Due to the nature of the event, the storylines for Throwback Throwdown II were self-contained and independent from the rest of Impact's programming.

The OVW Heavyweight Championship is a professional wrestling heavyweight championship owned by the Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) promotion. The original championship was designed and created in 1997 by Reggie Parks. The title was introduced on August 17, 1997, at an OVW live event, then known as the NWA-OVW Heavyweight Championship due to OVW's relationship with the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) governing body. OVW eventually parted ways with the NWA in October 2001, and the title was renamed the OVW Heavyweight Championship. OVW later became a developmental territory for the World Wrestling Entertainment organization, but their partnership eventually ceased on February 7, 2008. The title has no known weight-limit, even though it is a heavyweight championship. The title has also went through almost 3 different versions in its current twenty-four year run. With The first being made by Reggie Parks in 1997, which was then retired and vacated in early 2012. The second version would then be made by Reggie Parks and Dave Millican for OVW. The current version however was designed and created by Top Rope Belts, and ended up being used from 2012 to the present day.

The OVW Tag Team Championship formerly known as the OVW Southern Tag Team Championship is the tag team titles of Ohio Valley Wrestling. Created in 1997, the first champions were Nick Dinsmore and Flash Flanagan. There have been 184 reigns shared between 113 different teams consisting of 154 distinctive champions. The current champions are The Overmen in their first reign as a team.

Turning Point is a professional wrestling TNA+ event, produced by American professional wrestling promotion Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. The event was created in 2004 and was originally held annually in December, until the 2008 event where TNA changed its scheduled date to November. The 2004 event was the second TNA PPV to be produced annually. Since its inception, the event has been held exclusively in an indoor arena in Orlando, Florida, with all events taking place in the Impact Zone until 2019. Each event features talent from TNA competing in various professional wrestling match types. Since the inaugural event, eight championship matches have taken place in the main event.

The IWA World Championship is the major title in the IWA Mid-South based in Louisville, Kentucky. Against All Odds is an annual professional wrestling TNA+ event held by Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. It was established in 2005 as TNA's fourth pay-per-view event as part of the inaugural series of monthly pay-per-views put on by the promotion, and held in February. All Against All Odds PPVs but one have been held at the Impact! Zone.

The OVW Women's Championship is a women's professional wrestling championship in Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW). The first holder of the title was ODB, who declared herself champion in August 2006. The belt was defended as any other championship in professional wrestling until Serena Deeb declared she would defend the belt under 24/7 rules in May 2008. These rules lasted until Melody won the belt in November 2008.

The OVW Anarchy Championship is a professional wrestling championship owned by the Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) promotion. The title was introduced on April 27, 2018, and is a Stipulations Championship, meaning that the current champion can create any stipulation for a match in which they defend. There have been a total of eleven reigns and one vacancy shared between nine different champions. The current champion is Amon who is in his second reign.

The OVW Rush Division Championship is a mid card title created and owned by the Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) promotion. It was announced on November 20, 2019, on OVW TV Tapings, replacing the Television title which was discarded by Tony Gunn. The RUSH Championship is sponsored by COLLARxELBOW and a brand new division was created for it. The current champion is Manny Domingo, who is in his first reign.

The 2021 Homecoming was a professional wrestling event produced by Impact Wrestling. It was taped on July 18 and 19, 2021 and aired exclusively on Impact Plus on July 31, 2021. The OVW Kentucky Heavyweight Championship was a professional wrestling heavyweight championship created and promoted by the Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) promotion. It was created on September 30, 2020. Luscious Lawrence defeated Tony Bizo in the finals of a tournament to determine the inaugural champion. The final title holder was Kal Herro, who was in his first reign. The title was retired on February 15, 2024, at OVW #1279, after Mick Foley presented then-champion Kal Herro with the new OVW Media Championship.
