Armacost grew up in Tokyo and Washington D.C. At the age of 8 he first learned the clarinet before switching to the tenor saxophone at the age of 16 and playing in big bands in D.C. At 18 he moved to Los Angeles, where he performed with Bobby Bradford and Charlie Shoemake. After graduating (magna cum laude) from Pomona College, he moved to Amsterdam and worked from there for seven years in Europe, where he also taught and from 1986 was involved in recordings, including with Rob van den Broeck , Klaus Ignatzek, Rick Hollander , Walter Lang and Hendrik Meurkens (Sambahia, Concord 1990). He then lived in India for several years, where he learned tabla and dabbled in Indian classical music and played with Indian jazz musicians at the Bombay International Jazz Festival.
In 1993, Armacost moved to New York and recorded his debut album, Fire (Concord Jazz), with Kenny Barron, Gerald Cannon, Billy Hart, and Shingo Okudaira , followed by a live recording (Live at Smalls) with guest soloist Tom Harrell. He also recorded the album Ugetsu (with Peter Tuscher , Adrian Mears , Bernhard Pichl , Martin Zenker , and Dejan Terzic ), along with several others. During this time he also worked with Kenny Barron, Roy Hargrove, the David Murray Big Band, Maria Schneider Orchestra, Randy Brecker, Al Foster, Jimmy Cobb, Victor Lewis, Peter Erskine, Don Friedman, and Joris Teepe. In the 2010s he was also a member of the New York Standards Quartet and co-leader of the Brooklyn Big Band, for which he composes and arranges. He recorded an album with Mike Rodriguez and Yutaka Shiina titled Future Swing (2015). In 2018 he contributed to David Berkman's album Six of One. He was involved in 55 jazz recording sessions between 1986 and 2019. [5]
Armacost composed for Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. He has also taught with Jamey Aebersold at the Stanford Summer Jazz Workshops, at Queens College in New York City and as a guest lecturer at universities in the U.S., Japan, and Europe.

Steve Wilson is an American jazz multi-instrumentalist, who is best known in the musical community as a flutist and an alto and soprano saxophonist. He also plays the clarinet and the piccolo. Wilson performs on many different instruments and has performed and recorded on over twenty-five albums. His interests include folk, jazz, classical, world music, and experimental music. Wilson is currently on the faculty of New England Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts. He was elected as an American Champion by the National Flute Association. Wilson has maintained a busy career working as a session musician, and has contributed to many musicians of note both in the recording studios, but as a sideman on tours. Over the years he has participated in engagements with several musical ensembles, as well as his own solo efforts.

Smalls Jazz Club is a jazz club at 183 West 10th Street, Greenwich Village, New York City. Established in 1994, it earned a reputation in the 1990s as a "hotbed for New York's jazz talent" with a "well-deserved reputation as one of the best places in the city to see rising talent in the New York jazz scene". Its jazz musicians are noted for being "talented, though largely unknown" while its music is characterized as "modern versions of bebop and hard bop". The club's main room is in a basement with a capacity of 50 people that expanded to 60 people. Smalls Jazz Club should not be confused with Smalls Paradise in Harlem, which was founded in 1925 by Ed Smalls and closed in the 1950s.

Ries is in his sixteenth year as a professor of jazz studies at the University of Toronto. His universe of work as composer, arranger, and instrumentalist ranges from rock to jazz to classical to experimental to ethno to fusions of respective genres thereof. His notable works with wide popularity include The Rolling Stones Project, a culmination of jazz arrangements of music by the Stones produced on two albums, the first in 2005 and the second in 2008.
