Timothy J. Manchin (born July 6,1955) is an American politician and attorney. He has served in the West Virginia House of Delegates since 2003. He was appointed to the seat vacated by the death of his uncle,A. James Manchin,in November 2003.
Tim Manchin was born in 1955 in Farmington,West Virginia to Ann Manchin and Joseph Manchin II. He graduated from Bridgeport High School. He got a B.S. cum laude from West Virginia University in 1977 and his J.D. from West Virginia College of Law in 1980.[ citation needed ] In 2011,after his law partner of 25 years became a West Virginia circuit court judge,Manchin founded the Manchin Injury Law Group in Fairmont,West Virginia.
He is a former president of West Virginia Trial Lawyers Association. He was also a board member of the City National Bank and the West Virginia Division of Labor Manufactured Housing.
In 2003,Democratic Governor Bob Wise appointed Tim Manchin to the Marion County-based 43rd District after the seat was vacated by the death of his uncle,A. James Manchin. He was elected in 2004 with 23%.He was re-elected in 2006 (29%), 2008 (26%), and 2010 (21%).
According to Politico,Tim Manchin met with the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in December 2011 to talk about setting up a campaign in West Virginia's 1st congressional district,then held by David McKinley (R-WV).
Manchin lives in Fairmont,Marion County,West Virginia with his wife Susan and their son. His uncle A. James Manchin,whom he succeeded in the House of Delegates,also served as West Virginia Secretary of State and State Treasurer. Another uncle,John Manchin,was mayor of Farmington,West Virginia. One of his grandfathers,Joe Manchin I,also was Mayor of Farmington. A first cousin,Joe Manchin III,is a former Governor,West Virginia Secretary of State,state senator and state delegate,and now serves as U.S. Senator. Another first cousin,Michael J. Aloi,serves as a federal magistrate judge in the Northern District of West Virginia.
The 1868–69 United States House of Representatives elections were held on various dates in various states between June 1,1868 and August 2,1869. Each state set its own date for its elections to the House of Representatives before or after the first session of the 41st United States Congress convened on March 4,1869. They coincided with the 1868 United States presidential election,which was won by Ulysses S. Grant. Elections were held for all 243 seats,representing 37 states. Incumbent Governor Joe Manchin III was the Democratic nominee,challenged by Republican nominee Russ Weeks and Mountain Party candidate Jesse Johnson. Manchin won every county in the state and was reelected by the largest margin for any gubernatorial candidate in West Virginia's history. Manchin won by over 44%,even as Barack Obama,the Democratic presidential nominee,lost the state to John McCain in the presidential election. As of 2023,this is the last time that Doddridge County has voted for a Democratic candidate for statewide office.

A colorful and controversial figure,he was the uncle of former West Virginia Governor and current U.S. Senator Joe Manchin III.

The 2010 United States Senate special election in West Virginia was held on November 2,2010. Incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Robert Byrd died in office on June 28,2010. Democratic Governor Joe Manchin appointed Carte Goodwin to temporarily fill the vacancy. Goodwin pledged to not run for election to the seat in exchange for the appointment. This was the first open U.S. Senate seat in West Virginia since 1984 and the first in this seat since 1956. Manchin won the open seat and served out the remainder of Byrd's elected term,which ended on January 3,2013.
Carte Patrick Goodwin is an American attorney and politician who served as a United States senator from West Virginia in 2010. A member of the Democratic Party,he was appointed by Governor Joe Manchin on July 16,2010 to fill the vacancy created by the death of Robert Byrd. He chose not to seek a full term in the Senate. Goodwin left office on November 15,2010 when Joe Manchin was sworn in after being elected to the Senate.
