Time Crashers is a British entertainment television programme co-produced by Wall to Wall Media and GroupM Entertainment for Channel 4. [1] The programme's format sees ten celebrities transported to different historical settings where they experience the life of the 'lower' classes and are set tasks relating to that era. It is presented by Tony Robinson and historian Cassie Newland. [2] [1]

The first series premiered on Channel 4 on 23 August 2015. The series contained six episodes that were broadcast on consecutive Sundays at 8pm for six weeks. [3]

Production

The production of the first series of Time Crashers was announced by Channel 4 in August 2014. It was initially described being a week-long celebrity game show with an ultimate winner crowned at the end of the series. [4] By August 2015, Channel 4 described the programme's genre as "entertainment" and the competitive game show element was dropped. Instead, each episode would feature historical "tasks" for the celebrities to fulfil. [1]

In production, the Channel 4 factual commissioning department worked alongside the entertainment team to make sure the programme was historically accurate. [1]

The celebrities are transported to a Georgian era 1796 manor house. The women celebrities experience life in the manor house kitchen while the men work on the landowner's farm. [10]

The celebrities begin this episode by an estuary in Suffolk where they experience being 1885 Victorian era oystermen and fishwives. The episode sees the celebrities fulfil an order of fish for Billingsgate Fish Market, London. [11]
6"Episode 6"27 September 2015 (2015-09-27)
The final episode of the series is set in the Iron Age in 43 AD where the celebrities have two days to prepare a Celtic feast. The celebrities elect Greg Rutherford and Meg Mathews as their tribe leaders. [12]

Reception

The first episode of Time Crashers attracted 1.33 million viewers on the Channel 4 HD and SD channels. The second episode attracted 730,000 viewers, and each subsequent episode attracted fewer than 790,000 viewers. [13]

Julia Raeside of The Guardian positively reviewed the first episode and described it as "simple entertainment perfection". She also praised the casting as "outstanding [...] These are proper people all and quite the mix." [14] Amy Burns of The Independent also gave a positive review of the first episode, calling the programme's format "truly engaging". [2]

Michael Hogan of The Telegraph gave the first episode two out of five stars, saying the programme "wasn’t educational, nor entertaining, and felt stitched together for novelty value". [15]

Time Crashers was featured in Series 6 Episode 1 of the Channel 4 reality show Gogglebox . [16]

<i>Inside No. 9</i> BBC TV dark comedy series

Inside No. 9 is a British black comedy anthology television programme that first aired on 5 February 2014. It is written by Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith and produced by the BBC. Each 30-minute episode is a self-contained story with new characters and a new setting, almost all starring Pemberton or Shearsmith. Aside from the writers, each episode has a new cast, allowing Inside No. 9 to attract a number of well-known actors. The stories are linked only by the number 9 in some way, typically taking the form of a door marked with the number 9, and a brass hare statue that is in the background of all episodes. Themes and tone vary from episode to episode, but all have elements of comedy and horror or perverse humour, in addition to a plot twist. Pemberton and Shearsmith took inspiration for Inside No. 9 from an episode of Psychoville, a previous project, which was filmed in a single room – this in turn was inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's Rope.

Gogglebox Australia is an Australian reality television program. It is an adaptation of the British series of the same name. The series, which is produced by Shine Australia, is a co-production between subscription television (STV) channel Lifestyle and free-to-air (FTA) network Network 10. It stars Pemberton, Shearsmith, Alison Steadman, Alice Lowe, Sophie McShera, Dan Starkey, Cariad Lloyd and Caden-Ellis Wall. The Grand Tour is a British motoring television series, created by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, James May and Andy Wilman, made for Amazon exclusively for its online streaming service Amazon Prime Video, and premiered on 18 November 2016. Gogglebox Ireland is an Irish reality show, broadcast on Virgin Media One from 22 September 2016 onwards and a co-production between Kite Entertainment in Dublin and Studio Lambert in London. The series is based on the original UK version and features 15 groups of families and friends from around Ireland who react to Irish, British and American television shows broadcast in Ireland. As well as RTÉ, Virgin Media Television and TG4, British channels BBC One, BBC Two and Channel 4 are also available to ROI viewers so these are included in the programmes reviewed along with some broadcast on satellite channels such as Sky One, TLC and MTV.

<i>Celebrity Watch Party</i> 2020 American reality show

Celebrity Watch Party is an American reality television series that aired on Fox from May 7 to July 23, 2020. The show is based on the British television series Gogglebox and features celebrities recording themselves watching and reacting to television shows and news stories inside their homes. Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on television, Fox pushed back the premieres of some scripted series to later in the year and opted to create Celebrity Watch Party as one of two shows—along with The Masked Singer: After the Mask—that could be produced remotely to fill the programming gap.
