Tina Sloan (born February 1, 1943) [1] is an American actress and author. She is best known for playing the role of Lillian Raines on the CBS soap opera Guiding Light from 1983 until the show's final broadcast in 2009. Since the cancellation of Guiding Light, she has published three books, Changing Shoes, a nonfiction book about aging gracefully, and two novels in a romantic thriller series, Chasing Cleopatra and Chasing Othello.
Sloan was born and raised in Bronxville, New York. [1] Her father was a Harvard educated lawyer and her mother was a homemaker. She has one brother and one sister. [2] She attended The Ursuline School and Manhattanville College. [3] After college, she attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. [1] She studied acting with Bob McAndrew and Warren Robertson. [3]
Sloan played Kate Thornton Cannell on the NBC soap opera Somerset from 1974-1976. She then joined the cast of the CBS soap opera Search for Tomorrow , playing Patti Barron Tate McCleary from 1976-1977. Her next role was on the NBC soap opera Another World as Dr. Olivia Delaney, from 1980–1981. [3]
In 1983, Sloan was cast as Lillian Raines on the CBS soap opera Guiding Light , playing the role until the show's cancellation in 2009. [3]
During her time on Guiding Light, she made guest appearances on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Third Watch . [4] [3] [5] She also had roles in the films Celebrity, The Curse of the Jade Scorpion, Changing Lanes, The Guru, People I Know, and The Brave One. [6] [5]
Since the cancellation of Guiding Light, Sloan has appeared in the films Black Swan and Happy New Year. [6] [5] She played the role of Katherine Pierce on the web series Venice: The Series from 2009-2019. [7] From 2014-2020, she played Louise Cassell on the web series Beacon Hill . [8] [9]
In 2010, Sloan wrote a nonfiction book, Changing Shoes. She also wrote a one-woman show to go along with the book, touring the U.S. with several stops in Florida. She then wrote two novels, Chasing Cleopatra (2020) and Chasing Othello (2022). [10]
Sloan's first marriage was to a writer who had predeceased her by the time she was twenty-eight. She met businessman Steve McPherson at a dinner party five years later and they were married in 1975. She had eight miscarriages before giving birth to their son in 1980. [1] Their son is now a Harvard graduate who served as a captain in the Marine Corps. [6] They have three grandchildren. Sloan also has two stepchildren from McPherson's previous relationship. [10]
She has run eight marathons. She has climbed to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa and also climbed a 20,000-foot peak in Nepal. [10] [4] Sloan is on the board of advisors for Outward Bound. [2]

Guiding Light is an American radio and television soap opera. Guiding Light aired on CBS for 57 years between June 30, 1952, and September 18, 2009, overlapping a 19-year broadcast on radio between January 25, 1937, and June 29, 1956. With 72 years of radio and television runs, Guiding Light is the longest-running soap opera, ahead of General Hospital, and is the fifth-longest-running program in all of broadcast history; only the American country music radio program Grand Ole Opry, the BBC religious program The Daily Service (1928), the CBS religious program Music and the Spoken Word (1929), and the Norwegian children's radio program Lørdagsbarnetimen (1924–2010) have been on the air longer.
