The University of Alberta is a public research university located in Edmonton,Alberta,Canada. It was founded in 1908 by Alexander Cameron Rutherford,the first premier of Alberta,and Henry Marshall Tory,the university's first president. It was enabled through the Post-secondary Learning Act. The university is considered a "comprehensive academic and research university" (CARU),which means that it offers a range of academic and professional programs that generally lead to undergraduate and graduate level credentials.

Lara K. Mahal is an American chemist who is the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Glycomics at the University of Alberta in Edmonton,Alberta,Canada. She is also a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Alberta. She is notable both for her pioneering work establishing lectin microarrays as a new technology for glycomics,her work on miRNA regulation of glycosylation and her graduate work with Carolyn R. Bertozzi on unnatural carbohydrate incorporation. Work in her laboratory focuses on understanding the role of carbohydrates in human health using systems- and chemical biology-based approaches

Shana O. Kelley is a scientist and Neena B. Schwartz Professor of Chemistry and Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University. She is affiliated with Northwestern's International Institute for Nanotechnology and was previously part of the University of Toronto's Faculty of Pharmacy and Faculty of Medicine. Margaret-Ann Armour was a Scottish-born Canadian chemist based at the University of Alberta. She is best known for her expertise in developing guidelines for hazardous lab waste disposal,and for being a vocal advocate for women in science. Armour founded the Women in Scholarship,Engineering,Science and Technology (WISEST) program,and served as the first and only Associate Dean of Science for Diversity at the University of Alberta. Among her many honors,she was named a member of the Order of Canada (2006),a 3M Teaching Fellow (1996) and a Canada 150 ambassador (2017).
Paul D. McNicholas is an Irish-Canadian statistician. He is a professor and University Scholar in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at McMaster University. In 2015,McNicholas was awarded the Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Computational Statistics. McNicholas uses computational statistics techniques,and mixture models in particular,to gain insight into large and complex datasets. He is editor-in-chief of the Journal of Classification.
The Steacie Prize is a scientific prize awarded to a scientist or engineer of 40 years or younger for outstanding research in Canada. The Steacie Prize is advertised as Canada’s most prestigious early career award. It was first awarded in 1964,to Jan Van Kranendonk,and it has since been given annually. The award is named in honor of Edgar William Richard Steacie and is funded from the E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fund,which was established via contributions from colleagues and friends of Steacie.

Emily D. Cranston is a Canadian chemist who is a professor at the University of British Columbia and President’s Excellence Chair in Forest Bioproducts. She investigates nanocellulose and hybrid bio-based materials. Cranston is an NSERC E.W.R. Steacie fellow and was awarded the Kavli Emerging Leader in Chemistry lectureship in 2018 and the Tappi NanoDivision Technical Award in 2021.
