Todd Douglas Phillips (born November 25, 1973) [1] is an American college basketball coach who is currently the head coach of the Utah Valley Wolverines team. [2]
Phillips played college basketball at Snow College for a pair of seasons before finishing his playing career at Lewis-Clark State. [2]
After graduation, Phillips' first college coaching job was as an assistant at Westminster College for eight seasons, before spending another three at Salt Lake Community College. [3] In 2011, Phillips was named the head coach at Salt Lake CC, where in eight seasons he compiled a 205–58 overall record, including winning the NJCAA Men's Division I Basketball Championship in 2016. [4] [5] During his time at Salt Lake, Phillips coached multiple NCAA Division I players, plus NBA player Gary Payton II.
In 2019, Phillips would join Mark Madsen's coaching staff at Utah Valley, where he became the team's associate head coach and was on staff for two WAC regular season titles, as well as the Wolverines' semifinal run in the 2023 NIT. [6] [7] [8]
On April 6, 2023, Phillips was promoted to head coach at Utah Valley when Madsen accepted the head coaching position at Cal. [9] [10] [11] [12] [13] Phillips proceeded to win 16 games that season, the most by any first-year head coach in Utah Valley men's basketball history since the Wolverines became a full Division I member in July of 2009.

Mark Ellsworth Madsen is an American basketball coach and former NBA player who is the head coach of the California Golden Bears of the ACC. Due to his hustle and physical style of play, he received the nickname "Mad Dog" while playing for the San Ramon Valley High School Wolves, and the moniker continued during his time with the Stanford Cardinal and beyond. He played professionally in the National Basketball Association (NBA) with the Los Angeles Lakers, winning two NBA championships. He also played for the Minnesota Timberwolves.
The Utah Valley Wolverines represent Utah Valley University in NCAA DI collegiate athletics and sponsor 16 sporting programs. The Wolverines participate in the Western Athletic Conference. The school mascot is the Wolverine, and the colors are green and white. The UVU student section is called The Den. A name change from The Mawl, the student section's previous name, was enacted in 2017. All UVU students can get their Den pass, which includes free admission to all athletic events.

The 2013–14 Utah Valley Wolverines men's basketball team represented Utah Valley University in the 2013–14 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. Dick Hunsaker entered his twelfth season as the UVU head coach. The Wolverines played their home games at the UCCU Center as new members of the Western Athletic Conference. They finished the season 20–12, 13–3 in WAC play to win the WAC regular season championship. They advanced to the semifinals of the WAC tournament where they lost to Idaho. As a regular season conference champion who failed to win their conference tournament, they received an automatic bid to the National Invitation Tournament where they lost in the first round to California.
The 2015–16 Utah Valley Wolverines men's basketball team represented Utah Valley University in the 2015–16 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. This was the first year under head coach Mark Pope. They played their home games at the UCCU Center and were member of the Western Athletic Conference. They finished the season 12–18, 6–8 in WAC play to finish in fifth place. They lost in the quarterfinals of the WAC tournament to UMKC.

Due to irregularities in the WAC standings due to cancelled games, they were set to be the No. 6 seed in the WAC tournament, however, the tournament was cancelled amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 2022–23 Utah Valley Wolverines men's basketball team represented Utah Valley University in the 2022–23 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Wolverines, led by fourth-year head coach Mark Madsen, played their home games at the UCCU Center in Orem, Utah, and competed as members of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). They finished with an overall record of 24–7, 15–3 in WAC play, to finish in first place. In the 2023 WAC tournament, they defeated Tarleton in the quarterfinals before losing to Southern Utah in the semifinals the following day. As the conference leader who didn't win their tournament, they were offered an automatic bid to play in the NIT. They defeated New Mexico, Colorado, and Cincinnati to reach the semifinal round, where they finally fell to UAB in overtime, 86–88. With a final record of 28–9, the 2022–23 season marked the Wolverine's most successful season to date as a D-I program.

The conference began play in late November 2023. This is the WAC's 62nd season of basketball. The WAC competed with 11 teams due to two teams having left the conference since the prior season. Both New Mexico State and Sam Houston joined Conference USA effective July 1, 2023. The WAC tournament was held March 13–16, 2024 with the top eight teams competing for the automatic bid to the 2024 NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament at Orleans Arena in the Las Vegas-area community of Paradise, Nevada.
