Toneelgroep Amsterdam is the largest repertory company in the Netherlands. Its home base is the Amsterdam Stadsschouwburg, a classical 19th century theatre building in the heart of Amsterdam.
The Dutch Company Toneelgroep Amsterdam started in 1987 through a merger of Toneelgroep Centrum and Publiekstheater with Gerardjan Rijnders as its artistic director. His montage-method of creating plays and his avant-garde stagings of classic plays were very influential in the Netherlands, as well as abroad. Since 2000 the company is led by Flemish director Ivo van Hove. He and his long-time designer Jan Versweyveld broke through the confinements of the classical stage to rediscover the stage as a "location." For their production Faces (an adaptation of John Cassavetes's film) the audience watched the show lying in beds.
Many of Toneelgroep Amsterdam's productions travel abroad. For instance, van Hove's adaptation of several of Shakespeare's plays, presented under the title Roman Tragedies, was shown at the major European theatre festivals (Wiener Festwochen, [1] Festival d'Avignon, [2] Theaterformen). Opening Night , another adaptation of a Cassavetes film, was shown at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York in December 2008, [3] [4] and at Melbourne Festival in Australia in October 2010, which was van Hove's Australian debut. The novel's protagonist, Howard Roark, is an intransigent young architect, who battles against conventional standards and refuses to compromise with an architectural establishment unwilling to accept innovation. A View from the Bridge is a play by American playwright Arthur Miller. It was first staged on September 29, 1955, as a one-act verse drama with A Memory of Two Mondays at the Coronet Theatre on Broadway. The run was unsuccessful, and Miller subsequently revised and extended the play to contain two acts; this version is the one with which audiences are most familiar. The two-act version premiered in the New Watergate theatre club in London's West End under the direction of Peter Brook on October 11, 1956.

Greek is an opera in two acts composed by Mark-Anthony Turnage to a libretto adapted by Turnage and Jonathan Moore from Steven Berkoff's 1980 verse play Greek. The play and the opera are a re-telling of Sophocles's Greek tragedy Oedipus Rex with the setting changed to the East End of London in the 1980s. The opera was first performed on 17 June 1988 in the Carl-Orff-Saal of the Gasteig, Munich, in a co-production by the Munich Biennale, the Edinburgh International Festival and the BBC.

As of November 2012, the company continues to perform it at venues across the world. Directed by Ivo van Hove, the production has been highly praised for its acting, its innovative set, and its use of multimedia.
Ivo van Hove is a Belgian theatre director known as the artistic director of Toneelgroep Amsterdam in the Netherlands and for his Off-Broadway avant-garde experimental theatre productions. On Broadway, he has directed revival productions of Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge, and The Crucible, Lee Hall's Network in 2018, and Stephen Sondheim's West Side Story in 2020. Among his numerous awards he has received a Tony Award and a Laurence Olivier Award for A View from the Bridge. He was made a Knight of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France in 2004, and a Commander in the Order of the Crown in 2016.
