The Travel Air 4000 is an American general-purpose biplane of the 1920s, a member of the family of aircraft that began with the Travel Air Model A. [1] It was later known as the Model 4. [2] Derived from the Model BW, around 100 were built, including two that were converted from Model 2000s. [2]
Like other members of this family, the Model 4000 is an unequal-span, single-bay, staggered biplane of conventional design. [2] The passengers and pilot sit in tandem, open cockpits. [2] It has a conventional tail, and fixed, tailskid undercarriage. [2] The fuselage is built from welded steel tubes, and the wings from wood. [3] Travel Air model numbers primarily reflected changes in powerplant, and the Model 4000 was originally powered by a Wright J-5 or J-4 radial engine mounted in the nose, driving a tractor propeller. [2] From late 1928 onwards, however, the Model 4000 and Model 4 designations were applied to aircraft powered by a wide variety of other air-cooled radial engines. [2] [4]
Travel Air built fourteen Model 4000s in 1927, and the design received type certificate ATC-32 in April 1928. [4] Most Model BWs were registered under the same type certificate. [5]
Starting with the Model B-4000, some variants had a new "outrigger" style undercarriage, where oleo struts were attached outboard of the main undercarriage units, connected to struts forward of the lower wing. [6]
Model 4000 variants are distinguished by changes in their wing type and powerplant, although other characteristics such as undercarriage changes or roles such as mailplane or aerial spraying are sometimes also reflected in the model numbers.

Apart from its use in general avaiation, the Model 4000 was flown competitively. Louise Thaden flew a D-4000 to win the inaugural Women's Air Derby at the 1929 National Air Races. [11]
They were also used for film work. D-4000s represented World War I Nieuport fighters in The Dawn Patrol (1930), Hell's Angels (1930), and Young Eagles (1930). [12]

The Travel Air 2000 is an open-cockpit biplane aircraft produced in the United States in the late 1920s by the Travel Air Manufacturing Company. During the period from 1924–1929, Travel Air produced more aircraft than any other American manufacturer, including over 1,000 biplanes. While an exact number is almost impossible to ascertain due to the number of conversions and rebuilds, some estimates for Travel Air as a whole range from 1,200 to nearly 2,000 aircraft.

Several were used for record breaking endurance flights by female pilots during the early 1930s including one in which the aircraft stayed aloft for almost ten days.

The Curtiss-Wright CW-14, named variously Travel Air, Sportsman, Speedwing and Osprey is an American 3-seat open cockpit single-bay biplane from the 1930s that was developed by Travel Air as a replacement for the highly successful Travel Air 4000. As a result of the Great Depression, which also limited sales, Travel Air merged into the Curtiss-Wright group of companies before production could start, so all examples were built by Curtiss-Wright. Its main claim to fame would be as the most numerous aircraft used in the Chaco war, where it formed the backbone of the Bolivian Air Force.
The Butler Blackhawk and the Skyway from which it was developed were American three-seat open-cockpit single engine biplanes of the late 1920s that were built in small numbers immediately prior to having their intended production run interrupted by the onset of the Great Depression.
The Swallow Super Swallow is an American-built general purpose biplane of the late 1920s, developed from the Swallow New Swallow. Versions powered by the 90-hp (66-kW) Curtiss OX-5 engine and the 220-hp (162-kW) Wright J-5 engine are also known as the Swallow 90 and Swallow 220 or as the OX-5 Swallow and J5 Swallow.
The Travel Air Model 11, also known as the Travel Air Model 11000 or the Curtiss-Wright Travel Air CW-11, was an American racing biplane developed from the general-purpose Travel Air 2000, and its derivative the Model 4-D. Two examples competed in different events during the 1929 National Air Races, including the inaugural Women's Air Derby. Pioneering woman aviator Marvel Crosson was killed flying a Model 11 in the latter event.
