The mixed relay triathlon was part of the Triathlon at the 2018 Commonwealth Games program. The competition was held on 7 April 2018 in the Southport Broadwater Parklands.

A triathlon is a multisport race with three continuous and sequential endurance races. The word is of Greek origin, from τρεῖς or treis (three) and ἆθλος or athlos (competition).

Triathlon at the 2018 Commonwealth Games

Triathlon at the 2018 Commonwealth Games was held in the Southport Broadwater Parklands, Gold Coast from April 5th to 7th. A total of five events took place, two each for men and women and a mixed relay event. For the first time ever, para-triathlon events were contested at the Commonwealth Games.

Southport Broadwater Parklands

The Southport Broadwater Parklands is a large community park located in Southport. It is designed for large community gatherings and families. The park has many different areas for children and barbecue areas for families. The park went through a major redevelopment and was re-opened by the Premier of Queensland, Anna Bligh, on 23 August 2009. Southport Broadwater Parklands has become a popular family attraction.

Competition format

Each team consisted of four athletes (two male and two female) and each had to cover a course of 250 metres (0.16 mi) swimming, 7 kilometres (4.3 mi) road bicycling, and 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) road running. [1]

A relay race is a racing competition where members of a team take turns completing parts of racecourse or performing a certain action. Emma Moffatt triathlete

It was held on 19 August 2010 at East Coast Park. The teams were made based on the results of the boys' and girls' triathlon event held of August 15–16, 2010. Each team had two boys and two girls and were split by continent. A total of 15 teams raced in the event.

The ITU Triathlon Mixed Relay World Championships, is an annual team triathlon competition organized by the International Triathlon Union (ITU). The competition is completed in teams of four, two men and two women, with each member doing a super-sprint distance triathlon.

The triathlon competitions at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo will feature fifty-five athletes competing in each of the men's and women's events. It will also add the new mixed team relay event.

Triathlon at the 2014 Commonwealth Games

The Triathlon competitions at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, in Glasgow, were held in Strathclyde Country Park. The men's and women's individual events were held on Thursday 24 July and women's triathlon was the first medal event of the Games. Mixed team relay was held on Saturday 26 July for the first time ever in major multi-sport Games. Marisol Casado, ITU President and IOC member, commented: "We are delighted the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee has embraced the Triathlon Mixed Relay. Triathlon is on currently on a high in the United Kingdom, and the Mixed Relay will offer an extra opportunity for the people of Glasgow to watch another thrilling and unpredictable event live on their city streets."

The mixed relay triathlon was part of the Triathlon at the 2014 Commonwealth Games program. The competition was held on 26 July 2014 at Strathclyde Country Park in Glasgow. This was the first time the event has been held at the Commonwealth Games.

The 2018 ITU World Triathlon Series was the 10th season of the World triathlon series, the top level international series for triathlon, since its establishment in 2009. The mixed relay triathlon was part of the Triathlon at the 2018 Asian Games program, was held in JSC Lake Jakabaring on 31 August 2018. The race was held in four legs each one consisted of 300 metres (0.19 mi) swimming, 6.3 kilometres (3.9 mi) road bicycle racing, and 2.1 kilometres (1.3 mi) road running.

The 2019 ITU Triathlon Mixed Relay World Championship was the 11th edition of the mixed relay world championships and the 7th to be held in Hamburg, Germany. The race was hosted on 7 July 2019 to coincide with the 2019 ITU World Triathlon Series Hamburg race, and featured 32 men and 32 women representing 16 countries. The race was around the Binnenalster, an artificial lake in central Hamburg. The race followed the standard mixed relay format, where each athlete would swim 300m, cycle 7km and run 1.7km before tagging their next teammate to do the same, with the specified gender order of female—male—female—male.
