Trinity International Hip Hop Festival

The Trinity International Hip Hop Festival is a free music festival that brings together Hip Hop artists from around the world. It has been held annually at Trinity College in Hartford, CT since 2006.

"The festival was designed to promote international understanding and community development through hip-hop." [1] It is "the first and only free global Hip-Hop festival dedicated to educating and exposing the public to Hip-Hop from around the world." [2]

The festival was co-founded by Trinity College students Jason Azevedo and Magee McIlvaine and Nomadic Wax founder Ben Herson to "combat the disunity, segregation, and violence of Hartford, CT and Trinity College using the historically education-oriented and politically revolutionary medium — Hip Hop – and focusing on its global potency and proliferation to unify Trinity College, the city of Hartford, and the Globe." The concert portion of the 2009 festival was headlined by Somalian Hip Hop artist K'Naan and featured performances by many artists, including BeatBurgerBand from the Czech Republic, Poetic Pilgrimage from the United Kingdom, Blitz the Ambassador from Ghana, and Game Rebellion from Brooklyn, NY.

In 2018, many international opening acts were scheduled. Because of increased visa restrictions under the Trump administration, many visas were delayed, and organizers couldn't be certain which artists would be attending until a week before the event. [4]

The festival does not focus solely on the musical aspect of Hip Hop; B-boy battles, graffiti art sessions, panel discussions about pressing issues in Hip Hop, and film screenings have been incorporated into the festival each year. [5]

As part of a class taught in Fall 2017 by Seth Markle, a professor of History and International Studies at Trinity College, 15 students created short films profiling Hip Hop pioneers from Hartford for the Hartford History Center. [6]

The station, owned by Trinity College, can be found on the dial at 89.3 MHz.

UCTV (University of Connecticut)

Saarang is the annual social and cultural festival of IIT Madras. It is a 5 day long festival usually in the second week of the year which receives a footfall of over 60,000+ people from over 500 colleges all across the country. Founded in 1974, Saarang is the second oldest college festival in India and has established a firm place in every student's college bucket list. Having started off under the banner of 'Mardi Gras' the fest was initially home to a small number of quizzes and music events widely regarded as South India's most competitive. Through the early 21st century the festival, having changed its avatar and adopted the name 'Saarang', grew rapidly with the help of corporate sponsorship, collaboration with large-scale event organisers and international artistes from 5 continents.

The Yankee Institute for Public Policy is a free market, limited government American think tank based in Hartford, Connecticut, that researches Connecticut public policy questions. Organized as a 501(c)(3), the group's stated mission is to "develop and advocate for free market, limited government public policy solutions in Connecticut." Yankee was founded in 1984 by Bernard Zimmern, a French entrepreneur who was living in Norwalk, Connecticut, and Professor Gerald Gunderson of Trinity College. The organization is a member of the State Policy Network.

Daniel "Transit22" Bennett, performing under the stage name Transit22, is a Western Canadian Music Award and Independent Music Award nominated hip hop artist, a Calgary poet laureate finalist and a winner of a Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Emerging Artist Award based in Calgary, Alberta.

Joseph Young Jr. American comics creator

Joseph Young Jr. is a nationally recognized African-American cartoonist and animator, who runs the Hartford Animation & Film Institute (HAFI). Young is the creator of the Scruples comic strip in the 1990s, and the strip's characters now star in the animated film that the institute completed in December [2006]. He is the father of Hip hop artist Tang Sauce.

He was the founder of the Monday Night Jazz Series in Hartford, Connecticut, which was recognized by the Library of Congress as the oldest and longest-running free festival for jazz in the United States and featured jazz greats such as Cannonball Adderley, Herbie Hancock, Roy Haynes, Ron Carter, Thelonious Monk, Tito Puente, Woody Shaw, Sun Ra, Bobby Hutcherson, Roy Haynes, Freddie Hubbard, Slide Hampton Horace Silver, Hugh Masekela, and the "MJQ" Modern Jazz Quartet just to name a few. Brown also founded The Greater Hartford Festival of Jazz in 1992 to commemorate 25 years of the Monday night jazz series which in 2016, the Hartford Jazz Society renamed "Paul Brown Monday Night Jazz". He was co-founder of Hartford's Artists Collective, Inc.
