Summer Jam is the annual hip-hop fest held in the tri-state area and sponsored by New York-based radio station Hot 97FM. Normally held in June, the concert features popular New York and national acts in hip hop and R&B. Summer Jam 2024 will be held June 2, 2024 at the UBS Arena in Elmont, New York.
The hip-hop summer festival format was originally pioneered and popularized by San Francisco radio station KMEL with their large-scale Summer Jam concerts [1] from 1987 through the 1990s and present day. [2] KMEL continues to host smaller versions of the event annually. [3] Similarly, Los Angeles station KKBT held an annual Summer Jam hip-hop concert during the 1990s after hiring KMEL's Program Director in 1993. [1] The concert was discontinued as the station switched formats.
By 1994, there was thought to be a lack of large, exclusively hip-hop festivals in the tri-state area. As hip-hop began to rise in commercial success, WQHT, Hot 97, the primary Hip-hop and R&B FM radio station in the area, began to plan an exclusively hip-hop festival. Given the scale of such an undertaking, Carl Freed, who at the time worked with Metropolitan Entertainment, was asked to executively produce the festival. [4] [5] The first Hot 97 Summer Jam took place at the then Brendon Byrne Arena (later Meadowlands Arena, Continental Airlines Arena and Izod Center) in East Rutherford, New Jersey on June 21, 1994. [4] [5] The original lineup included Black Moon, Gang Starr, Nas, Queen Latifah, A Tribe Called Quest, Arrested Development, SWV, and the Wu-Tang Clan. [4]
By 2001, the festival venue moved to Nassau Coliseum, in Uniondale, New York, due to safety concerns of venue managers at the previous venue. [6] The 2001 festival included many more national acts from outside of New York, with a line-up including Destiny's Child, Eve, Ja Rule, Jadakiss, R. Kelly, Ludacris, Outkast, Nelly, and Jay-Z. [6] Famously, that year, Jay-Z debuted his infamous "Takeover" diss track directed at Nas and Mobb Deep, and brought out Michael Jackson, Missy Elliott, and EPMD on stage, establishing the tradition of surprise guests at the festival. In 2003, the festival moved to Giants Stadium, due to the need for increased capacity. [8] After the demolition of Giants Stadium, the festival moved to the New Meadowlands Stadium (later Metlife Stadium), in 2010. [9] In 2023, the festival returned to New York state after 21 years, taking place at UBS arena. [10]
Since 2012, in addition to the main stage, Summer Jam has also featured a "festival stage" earlier in the day, showcasing up-and-coming, as well as local artists.
In 2012, Nicki Minaj skipped her scheduled performance at the festival, after remarks from Hot 97 on-air personality Peter Rosenberg, on stage, earlier during the festival. [11] Nicki Minaj returned to the Summer Jam stage the following year, as a surprise performer.
A festival held on June 7, 2015 included a disturbance in the stadium parking lot. The disturbance began when crowds of people without tickets attempted to enter the stadium anyway by climbing over the fence and were stopped by New Jersey State Police. At this time, the decision to close all gates to the stadium was made and those in the parking lot were asked to leave. The crowd began throwing glass bottles and other objects. The police responded with riot gear, armored vehicles, and pepper spray. Multiple arrests were made. [12] [13]
The festival often coincides with the occurrence of severe inclement weather, as it did during the festivals of 2006, [14] 2014, [15] 2016, [16] [17] and 2021. [18]
Inga DeCarlo Fung Marchand, better known by her stage name Foxy Brown, is an American rapper. Upon being signed to Def Jam Recordings in 1996, she released her debut studio album, Ill Na Na, in November of that year to critical and commercial success. It peaked at number seven on the Billboard 200, received platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), sold over seven million units worldwide, and was supported by the Billboard Hot 100-top ten single "I'll Be".
WQHT is a commercial radio station, licensed to New York, New York, which broadcasts an urban contemporary music format. The station is owned by Mediaco Holding, a subsidiary of the Standard General hedge fund.
Reminisce Kioni Mackie, known professionally as Remy Ma, is an American rapper. Discovered by the late rapper Big Pun, she came to prominence for her work as a member of Fat Joe's group, Terror Squad. Her debut solo album, There's Something About Remy: Based on a True Story (2006), peaked at number 33 on the Billboard 200 chart. Ma's most commercially successful songs include "Whuteva", "Lean Back" (with Terror Squad, "Conceited", and "All the Way Up".
"I'm Out" is a song recorded by American recording artist Ciara, for her eponymously titled fifth studio album (2013), featuring guest vocals from Trinidadian-American rapper Nicki Minaj. It was written by Ciara, Minaj and Rock City brothers, Timothy and Theron Thomas. Rock City and The Co-Captains provided production. "I'm Out" made its premiere on May 22, 2013, on Ciara's official SoundCloud account and was serviced to urban radio in the United States on June 3, 2013, as the second single from Ciara through Epic Records. Lyrically, it incorporates themes of breakups and making an ex-boyfriend regret leaving.
Onika Tanya Maraj-Petty, known professionally as Nicki Minaj, is a Trinidadian rapper, singer, and songwriter. Regarded as the "Queen of Rap" and one of the most influential rappers of all time, she is credited as a driving force in the mainstream resurgence of female rap in the early 2010s. Known for her dynamic rap flow, witty lyrics, musical versatility, and alter egos, Minaj first gained recognition after releasing three mixtapes between 2007 and 2009.
The Away from Home Tour, also marketed as the Light Dreams and Nightmares Tour, was the first headlining concert tour by Canadian recording artist, Drake.
"Letting Go (Dutty Love)" is a song by American recording artist Sean Kingston. It was produced by Stargate, and features rapper Nicki Minaj. The song was originally released as the second single from Kingston's third studio album, Back 2 Life, but was taken off for unknown reasons. As of December 2014, the song has sold 1.1 million copies in the United States.
The Home & Home Tour was a tour by American rappers Jay-Z and Eminem. The tour comprised two shows at Comerica Park in Detroit, Michigan, and two shows in Yankee Stadium, New York City. The audio of Eminem's performance in Detroit has been released by the rapper's radio station Shade 45.
"Monster" is a song by American rapper Kanye West, released as the third single from his fifth studio album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010). The song features rappers Jay-Z, Rick Ross, and Nicki Minaj, along with indie folk group Bon Iver. All five credited acts have writing credits on the posse cut, with the production handled by West and Mike Dean. The instrumental is atmospheric and drum-heavy, and the lyrics reflect influences from horror films, creating an eerie composition which drew critical comparisons to the Michael Jackson track "Thriller".

"Gotta Have It" is a song by American hip hop artists Kanye West and Jay-Z from their collaborative album Watch the Throne (2011). The song was produced by West and the Neptunes, and samples three original compositions by James Brown: "Don't Tell a Lie About Me and I Won't Tell the Truth About You", "People Get Up and Drive Your Funky Soul" and "My Thang". The song explores themes of wealth, decadence and the economic stature in the US. The song received positive reviews from critics who complimented the production and the clever wordplay of the two rappers.
The Pink Friday Tour was the debut concert tour by Trinidadian rapper Nicki Minaj in support of her first two studio albums, Pink Friday (2010) and Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded (2012). The tour was officially announced on May 1, 2012.

It was released on May 29, 2012 by Young Money, Cash Money, and Universal Republic as the lead single from Minaj's second studio album, Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded (2012). "Twerk It" is a song by American rapper Busta Rhymes featuring Nicki Minaj. Written by both performers alongside its producer Pharrell Williams, the song was intended to serve as the lead single for Busta Rhymes' tenth studio album, E.L.E.2 , which was delayed from 2014 to 2020; the final album did not feature this song. "Twerk It" has been said to be Jamaican-inspired and is influenced by dancehall music. A music video for the song was shot in Flatbush, New York on June 3, 2013.

He is a co-host of two New York City radio programs: Ebro in the Morning, the weekday morning show at hip hop radio station WQHT ; and The Michael Kay Show on ESPN Radio affiliate WHSQ, which is also simulcast on the YES Network.
"She Came to Give It to You" is a song by American singer Usher, featuring Nicki Minaj and uncredited vocals from Pharrell Williams. It was released on July 8, 2014, through RCA Records. RCA Records sent the song to US rhythmic contemporary and contemporary hit radio on July 14, 2014. Originally intended to be the second single from his eighth studio album Hard II Love, the song was scrapped from the standard edition track listing, with the track only being included on the Japanese edition of the album.
The Pinkprint Tour was the third concert tour by Trinidadian rapper Nicki Minaj, in support of her third studio album, The Pinkprint (2014). The tour began on March 16, 2015, in Stockholm, Sweden and concluded on March 25, 2016, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, finishing with a total of 55 shows in four continents.

The Pink Friday 2 World Tour was the fourth solo, and fifth overall, concert tour by Trinidadian rapper Nicki Minaj, in support of her fifth studio album Pink Friday 2 (2023). With a gross of over $108.8 million based on 70 shows, it is the highest-grossing concert tour by a female rapper and the fourth-highest-grossing tour by a rapper or hip hop artist in history.
