Turkuaz was an American funk band based in Brooklyn, New York. [1]
Turkuaz originally formed out of Boston's Berklee College of Music scene in 2008, releasing the Dollar Store demo album while many of its members were still attending Berklee. [2] After relocating to New York City, they released their self-titled debut album in 2011. [3] Within the same year, they also released their sophomore album, Zerbert. Their third studio album, Digitonium, a concept album composed to synchronize with Disney's The Sword in the Stone, was released in 2015. [4]
The band did three performances of the music of Paul McCartney and Wings with original band member Denny Laine in 2018. [5]
Turkuaz's fourth studio album, Life in the City, was released in 2018. [6]
In 2020, Turkuaz released their first live concert film entitled None's a Ton, along with an audio soundtrack. [7]
After collaborating with Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads in the studio, Turkuaz was asked to participate in a 40th anniversary tour celebrating Remain in Light with Harrison and Talking Head's session guitarist Adrian Belew. [8] The tour had been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was originally set to resume in 2021. [9] [10]
On November 2, 2021, seven band members announced via social media that they were leaving the band to focus on other projects. [11] Over the next year, all former band members became involved in several different projects. In March 2022, Ghost Light announced former Turkuaz bassist Taylor Shell would be joining their band. [12] In July 2022, the seven members that left Turkuaz formed a new band, Cool Cool Cool. They played their first show at the Brooklyn Bowl on September 17, 2022. [13] In September 2022, Turkuaz released two final studio albums, Paradiso and Apollyon. The albums were recorded prior to the band's dissolution, with founding members Dave Brandwein and Taylor Shell deciding to release the albums after the departure of the rest of the band. [14]
In November 2022, Jerry Harrison and Adrian Belew announced a North American tour celebrating the Talking Heads album Remain in Light, with the members of Cool Cool Cool comprising most of the band, as well as being the supporting act. [15]
In December 2022, Dave Brandwein released his debut solo album, Sleeping Sun, Waking Moon, under the pseudonym Band For Sale. [16]
Turkuaz went through several lineup changes, with Dave Brandwein and Taylor Shell being the only members consistently in the band from 2008 to 2022. The band remained with a consistent studio and touring lineup from 2014 through 2021, with members Dave Brandwein, Taylor Shell, Sammi Garrett, Shira Elias, Craig Brodhead, Josh Schwartz, Greg Sanderson, Chris Brouwers, and Michelangelo Carubba.

King Crimson were an English-based progressive rock band formed in London in 1968. Led by guitarist Robert Fripp, they drew inspiration from a wide variety of music, incorporating elements of classical, jazz, folk, heavy metal, gamelan, blues, industrial, electronic, experimental music and new wave. Talking Heads were an American rock band that began performing under that name in 1975 in New York City. The band was composed of David Byrne, Chris Frantz (drums), Tina Weymouth (bass) and Jerry Harrison. Described as "one of the most critically acclaimed groups of the '80s," Talking Heads helped to pioneer new wave music by combining elements of punk, art rock, funk, and world music with "an anxious yet clean-cut image"; they have been called "a properly postmodernist band."

Yeah Yeah Yeahs are an American indie rock band formed in New York City in 2000. The group is composed of vocalist and pianist Karen O, guitarist and keyboardist Nick Zinner, and drummer Brian Chase. They are complemented in live performances by second guitarist David Pajo, who joined as a touring member in 2009 and replaced Imaad Wasif, who had previously held the role. According to a 2004 interview that aired during their appearance on ABC's Live from Central Park SummerStage series, the band's name was taken from modern New York City vernacular.

Jeremiah Griffin Harrison is an American musician, songwriter, producer, and entrepreneur. He began his professional music career as a member of the band the Modern Lovers, before becoming keyboardist and guitarist for the new wave group Talking Heads. In 2002, Harrison was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Talking Heads.
Eddie and the Hot Rods are a pub rock band from Essex founded in 1975. They are best known for their 1977 UK top ten hit "Do Anything You Wanna Do", released under the shortened name Rods. The group broke up in 1985, but reformed in 1996. Singer Barrie Masters was the only constant member until his death in 2019. The band continued to tour, fronted by their former bassist, Ian 'Dipster' Dean.
David Andrew Sitek is an American musician and record producer, known for his work with his band TV on the Radio. He has also worked with bands such as Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Liars, Foals, Celebration, Little Dragon, Wavves, Beady Eye, and Weezer, and produced free jazz-influenced remixes of songs by artists such as Beck and Nine Inch Nails, and has contributed a solo track to the Red Hot Organization Dark Was the Night charity compilation. Stop Making Sense is a live album by the American rock band Talking Heads, also serving as the soundtrack to the concert film of the same name. It was released in September 1984 and features nine tracks from the film, albeit with treatment and editing. The album spent over two years on the Billboard 200 chart. It was their first album to be distributed by EMI outside North America.

The band currently consists of Mason Taylor, Ben Azar (guitar), Nate Lueck, and Travis Abel (drums); while Michael Kreher and Chuck Sokol provide synthesized backdrops for live performances. In 2017, the band posted an extended play to SoundCloud, but their other social media accounts were deleted.
Joe Goddard is a British musician, songwriter, and DJ. He is best known as a member of the English synth-pop band Hot Chip, which he co-founded with Alexis Taylor. In 2007, he co-founded record label Greco-Roman, which has released albums by artists such as Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Disclosure. Goddard is also a member of electronica group The 2 Bears, and produced three solo albums, Harvest Festival (2009), Electric Lines (2017) and Harmonics (2024).
Ghost Light is a five-piece American jam band formed in 2017 by Tom Hamilton, Raina Mullen, Holly Bowling, Scotty Zwang, and Steve Lyons. Ghost Light's debut album, Best Kept Secrets, was named one of Glide's top 20 albums of 2019. Ghost Light has performed on major festival stages and in historic venues including Lockn' Festival, Jam Cruise, Electric Forest Festival, Mission Ballroom, Brooklyn Bowl, The Peach Music Festival and Terrapin Crossroads. Ghost Light toured as an opening act for Greensky Bluegrass in the winter of 2020.
Cheekface is an American indie rock band based in Los Angeles, California. Formed in 2017, the group consists of guitarist and lead vocalist Greg Katz, bassist and backup vocalist Amanda Tannen, and drummer Mark Edwards. Cheekface has released four studio albums, two EPs, and one live album, all on Katz's own label, New Professor Music.
James Casey (1983–2023) was an American saxophonist, composer, producer, and vocalist. He is best known as the saxophonist for Trey Anastasio Band, Soulive, and Lettuce. Casey also performed with Meghan Trainor, Phil Lesh, and Bill Kreutzmann. He died in 2023 after a 2 year battle with colon cancer. Casey was an advocate for early colon cancer screening and worked with The Colorectal Cancer Alliance to raise awareness leading to being interviewed on The Today Show in March 2023.
