Twin Eagles Group (TEG) was a Peruvian scener group founded in 1989. [1] It originally produced hacked games for the Commodore 64, [2] and would eventually modify games for video game consoles such as the Super NES and Nintendo 64. The group was commissioned to produce their ROM hacks. Due to loss of money, it was dissolved in 2003. [3] It has been credited with starting the Peruvian video games market.
Twin Eagles Group was founded by Lobsang Alvites, better known by the pseudonym Mr. Byte, and Overmind. [4] Mr. Byte founded TEG at 16 years old. The reason was because he had seen piracy/demoscene groups in other parts of the world through his travels, and wanted to found a similar organization in Peru. [5] It was famous as a cracking group, adding a cracktro at the beginning before distributing a game. [6] Eventually, it became a major supplier of video games in Peru, and was famous throughout Lima. The games were mostly supplied to TEG from Europe. [5]
With its newfound popularity, TEG would grow in size, recruiting many new members of various ages. The members were not paid by Mr. Byte, working with the group because of their passion for computers. TEG was mainly operated at Mr. Byte's house. [5]
TEG also had a separate group of members that made ROM hacks, such as Sonic The Hedgehog 4 for Super NES, a hack of Speedy Gonzales: Los Gatos Bandidos . [7] It was known for making hacks of soccer games like International Superstar Soccer , adding current South American teams to them, which gained popularity. [8] [1] Their commissioned hacks were distributed by different sellers all over the world. [9] However, they needed to stop this practice when copyright law in Peru became more regulated.
During 2001, former Peru president Alberto Fujimori was succeeded by Alejandro Toledo. TEG decided to use this as a premise for a political video game. The game was titled La Tercera Vuelta, or The Third Round, as inspired by Peru's two-round election system. TEG later created The King of Peru, a fighting game featuring Alejandro Toledo and Alan García, who were the presidential candidates of the time. A sequel was also created, featuring more characters. However, the computer company distributing the game began to distribute pirated copies, which caused TEG to become bankrupt. [5]
Mr. Byte changed to working on producing indie games after the dissolution of TEG.

Developer Sonic Team incorporated Chao into the games to encourage players to explore levels and support the good–evil dichotomy of Sonic Adventure 2.
A ROM image, or ROM file, is a computer file which contains a copy of the data from a read-only memory chip, often from a video game cartridge, or used to contain a computer's firmware, or from an arcade game's main board. The term is frequently used in the context of emulation, whereby older games or firmware are copied to ROM files on modern computers and can, using a piece of software known as an emulator, be run on a different device than which they were designed for. ROM burners are used to copy ROM images to hardware, such as ROM cartridges, or ROM chips, for debugging and QA testing.
In video game parlance, a multicart is a cartridge that contains more than one game. Typically, the separate games are available individually for purchase or were previously available individually. For this reason, collections, anthologies, and compilations are considered multicarts. The desirability of the multicart to consumers is that it provides better value, greater convenience, and more portability than the separate games would provide. The advantage to developers is that it allows two or more smaller games to be sold together for the price of one larger game, and provides an opportunity to repackage and sell older games one more time, often with little or no changes.
Sega Smash Pack is a series of game compilations featuring mostly Sega Genesis games.
ROM hacking is the process of modifying a ROM image or ROM file to alter the contents contained within them, usually of a video game to alter the game's graphics, dialogue, levels, gameplay, and/or other elements. This is usually done by technically inclined video game fans to improve an old game of importance, as a creative outlet, or to make new, unofficial games using the old game's engine. ROM hacks either re-design a game for an all-new, fun gameplay while keeping most if not all of the items the same, as well as unlocking and/or reimplementing features that existed in the game's code but are not utilized in-game.
The GD-ROM is a proprietary optical disc format developed as a collaboration between Sega and Yamaha for the Dreamcast.
PlayStation Portable homebrew refers to the process of using exploits and hacks to execute unsigned code on the PlayStation Portable (PSP).
Somari the Adventurer is a side-scrolling platform video game for the Family Computer. An unlicensed remake of Sega's 1991 Sega Genesis/Mega Drive game Sonic the Hedgehog, the game was sold primarily around Asia, Russia, Eastern Europe, and other regions where bootleg NES and Famicom cartridges were distributed. Like the original, players venture to defeat the mad scientist Dr. Robotnik, who plots to turn the animal population of the fictional South Island into evil robots. Unlike the original, the game features Nintendo's mascot Mario as the main character rather than Sonic. The title is a portmanteau of "Sonic" and "Mario".
Doctor Ivo"Eggman"Robotnik is a character created by the Japanese game designer Naoto Ohshima. He is the main antagonist of Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Eggman is a mad scientist who seeks to steal the mystical Chaos Emeralds, defeat Sonic the Hedgehog, and conquer the world. Eggman and his "Badnik" brand of military robots serve as bosses and enemies in the Sonic platform games. His distinctive characteristics include his red-black-yellow clothing, baldness, pince-nez sunglasses, and large mustache.
A fan game is a video game that is created by fans of a certain topic or IP. They are usually based on one, or in some cases several, video game entries or franchises. Many fan games attempt to clone or remake the original game's design, gameplay, and characters, but it is equally common for fans to develop a unique game using another as a template. Though the quality of fan games has always varied, recent advances in computer technology and in available tools, e.g. through open source software, have made creating high-quality games easier. Fan games can be seen as user-generated content, as part of the retrogaming phenomena, and as expression of the remix culture.
The first hobbyist-developed game for the Atari 2600 video game console was written in 1995, and more than 100 have been released since then. The majority of games are unlicensed clones of games for other platforms, and there are some also original games and ROM hacks. With only 128 bytes of RAM, no frame buffer, and the code and visuals closely intertwined, the 2600 is a difficult machine to program. and many games were written for the technical challenge. Emulators, programming tools, and documentation are available.
Sega Genesis Classics is a series of compilations featuring Sega Genesis video games released for Windows, Linux, macOS, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. Video game piracy is the unauthorized copying and distributing of video game software, and is a form of copyright infringement. It is often cited as a major problem that video game publishers face when distributing their products, due to the ease of being able to distribute games for free, via torrenting or websites offering direct download links. Right holders generally attempt to counter piracy of their products by enforcing the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, though this has never been totally successful. Digital distribution of pirated games has historically occurred on bulletin board systems (BBS), and more recently via decentralized peer-to-peer torrenting. In terms of physical distribution, China, Indonesia and Vietnam are known for major manufacturing and distribution centers for pirated game copies, while Hong Kong and Singapore are major importers.
The Retro Engine, also known as the Retro Software Development Kit, is a multiplatform game engine developed by Australian programmer Christian Whitehead, used in games from Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog series.
