Ubaydullah Hussain

Arslan Ubaydullah Maroof Hussain (born 1985) is a Norwegian former spokesperson of the Salafi-jihadist group Profetens Ummah. He has been arrested since December 2015, convicted for recruitment of jihadist foreign fighters, and for membership of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). [1]

Early life

Born into a family of Pakistani origin in Bjerke, Oslo, Hussain was an active ice hockey and football player with Hasle-Løren IL. [2] Until 2011, Hussain was a football and futsal referee, overseeing matches in Norway and elsewhere. This included refereeing matches in the Norway Cup. In 2011, he ended a match between Romsås IL and Høland IL three minutes early, after he was threatened by Romsås players when he gave one of their team members a red card and awarded their opponents a penalty. He was dismissed as a referee when the Football Association of Norway were informed of his extremist views. [3]

Islamist activism

Hussain was influenced by British militant Islamist Omar Bakri Muhammad, whom he sent a letter to and received a reply back as a 14-year-old in 1999. [4] He was later central in the establishment of the Norwegian salafi-jihadist group Profetens Ummah around 2011, alongside people such as Arfan Bhatti and Mohyeldeen Mohammad. [4] Hussain has later claimed that he does not hold any formal position within the group, while declining to name the group's leader. [4]

Hussain has praised numerous terror attacks, including the In Amenas hostage crisis, the Boston Marathon bombing, the Murder of Lee Rigby, the Westgate shopping mall attack [4] and the November 2015 Paris attacks, commenting that the West should expect more attacks. [5]

Hussain was arrested on 25 October 2012, charged with making threats against two journalists, one of whom was Nina Johnsrud, and for hate speech against Jews. [6] He was convicted in February 2014 and sentenced to a 120-day prison term, although he was released immediately due to the time he had already spent in custody. [7]

On 8 July 2014, Hussain was charged with multiple counts of encouraging others to commit murder and acts of terrorism. He denied all charges. [8] He was acquitted by the district court on 3 October 2014, the prosecution appealed the decision. [9] He was finally acquitted on 22 June 2015. [10]

Hussain was arrested on 8 December 2015, charged with recruiting several jihadist fighters for ISIL. [11] He has been held in custody since then, suspected of having recruited at least seven people to fight for ISIL, while claiming to have withdrawn as spokesperson and member of Profetens Ummah. [12]

On 4 April 2017 he was sentenced to 9 years in prison. [13] The sentencing was upheld in a court of appeal in January 2018. [1]

Christian Tybring-Gjedde is a Norwegian politician who represents the Progress Party. He has been a member of the Norwegian parliament since 2005, and was the leader of the Progress Party's Oslo chapter from 2010 to 2014.

Peder Are Nøstvold Jensen is a prominent "Counter-jihad" Norwegian blogger who writes under the pseudonym Fjordman and who has been characterized as far-right and Islamophobic. Jensen wrote anonymously as Fjordman starting in 2005, until he disclosed his identity in 2011. He has been active in the counterjihad movement, which argues that multiculturalism, particularly Muslim mass immigration, poses a threat to Western civilization. He has promoted this belief in a self-published book titled Defeating Eurabia, and stated that "Islam and all those who practise it must be totally and physically removed from the Western world".

Mazyar Keshvari

Mazyar Keshvari is an Iranian-born Norwegian former politician for the Progress Party and a convicted felon who is serving two prison sentences for fraud and violent threats. He was elected as a substitute member of the Norwegian parliament for the city of Oslo in 2013, representing the right-wing and anti-immigration Progress Party, and attended parliamentary sessions from 2013 to 2018 as the substitute of the mandate holder Siv Jensen who has been on leave from parliament during her government service. As a politician he was known for taking a hard stance on immigration, calling for a complete ban on further immigration to Norway, a stop to the practice of accepting asylum seekers in Norway, and the deportation of immigrants convicted of crimes. In 2019 he was convicted of aggravated fraud for defrauding the Norwegian parliament and in 2020 he was sentenced to 11 months imprisonment. He left the Norwegian parliament following his indictment in 2018 and also left the Progress Party in October 2019. In 2019 he was also arrested and charged with making violent threats, and he was convicted and sentenced to an additional four months in prison in 2020.

2008–2009 Oslo riots Anti-Jewish riots perpetrated mainly by Muslim youth in Norway during the Gaza War

On 29 December 2008, violent riots first broke out in Oslo, Norway amid protests against the Gaza War, starting outside the Israeli embassy. Riots broke out again following a protest on 4 January 2009, while the most violent and destructive riots took place on 8 and 10 January when riots spread throughout the city with widespread destruction of private and public property, clashes between rioters and police with several injuries, as well as attacks on civilians, including individuals targeted due to being thought by rioters to be Jews. Around 200 people were arrested in total, mainly Muslim youth, supported by left-wing autonomous Blitz activists.

Joshua French Norwegian-born security contractor and former soldier

Joshua Olav Daniel Hodne French is a Norwegian-British man who was convicted of murder in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. He worked as a security contractor with his friend Tjostolv Moland when they were arrested in May 2009, and he was later convicted of attempted murder, armed robbery, the formation of a criminal association and espionage for Norway, of which he and Moland were found guilty and sentenced to death. In 2014 he was also convicted of the murder of Moland. He was released in 2017 after serving 8 years of his sentence, and returned to Norway.

Mohyeldeen Mohammad is an Iraqi-Norwegian Islamist, and political activist associated with the fundamentalist Profetens Ummah group. He became a controversial figure in Norway after stating that the country is at war with Muslims and warning the Norwegian people with an 11 September happening on Norwegian soil. Since then, his media profile has risen following a series of statements regarding Norway, homosexuality and Islamism. He was formerly a Sharia student at the Islamic University of Madinah in Saudi Arabia, until he was deported from the country in 2011.

Rune Øygard is a former Norwegian politician representing the Norwegian Labour Party, who served as mayor of Vågå from 1995 to 2012 when he was granted leave following his indictment for child sexual abuse in a much publicized case, the so-called Vågå case. On 17 December 2012, he was found guilty of child sexual abuse, including sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl, and sentenced to 4 years imprisonment. The same day, he resigned as mayor.

Profetens Ummah

Profetens Ummah is a Salafi-jihadist Islamist organisation based in Norway. Since its emergence in late 2011 the group has become notorious for its vocal demonstrations, as well as statements praising Islamic terrorism. Other Muslims in Norway have referred to the group as a Khariji sect.

Nina Johnsrud is a Norwegian journalist who works as a crime reporter for the Oslo newspaper Dagsavisen. She was awarded the Fritt Ord Honorary Award for courageous journalism in 2012.

Rawti Shax or Didi Nwe is a Kurdish dark web-based offshoot of the Kurdish jihadist group Ansar al-Islam. In October 2015, seventeen members, including the suspected leader, Norway-based Najmuddin Faraj Ahmad "Mullah Krekar", were arrested or indicted in a coordinated, Italy-led multi-nation sweep by police across Europe. The operation dismantled an integrated cell in Italy, Norway, the United Kingdom, Germany, Finland and Switzerland.

Arfan Qadeer Bhatti is a Norwegian Islamist, and a leading figure in the Islamic State-affiliated group Profetens Ummah.

Hassan Abdi Dhuhulow was a Norwegian-Somalian Islamist terrorist and Al-Shabaab-member who was one of four perpetrators of the 2013 Westgate shopping mall attack in Nairobi, Kenya that killed 63 people.

Bastian Vasquez Norwegian terrorist

Bastian Vasquez, also known as Abu Safiyyah, was a Norwegian jihadist who made prominent appearances in propaganda videos for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). He is presumed to have died in January or in April/May 2015, in a non-combat infighting incident; another source, Verdens Gang, says that he "lost his life in March 2015, while working with the production of bombs for IS".

Geir Eriksen, former names Geir Selvik and Geir Selvik Malthe-Sørenssen, is a Norwegian con artist and convicted felon. He formerly worked as a private investigator for criminal clients, and became known for fabricating material in the Arne Treholt case; it was subsequently revealed that he had engaged in similar fraud in a large number of other cases. He was charged with aggravated fraud and forgery; he pled guilty to all charges and in 2018 was sentenced to three years in prison and to pay 7 million kr in restitution. He has changed his names several times, but is best known under the name Geir Selvik Malthe-Sørenssen, his legal name from 2010 to 2017.

On 24 July 2014, a suspected imminent terror attack by Islamic extremists targeting Norway was disclosed by Norwegian authorities. The suspected plot prompted a public terror alert announcement and unprecedented short-term security measures being introduced in Norway in late July.

Eirik Jensen is a Norwegian drug trafficker and former policeman. In November 2020 media said that the Supreme Court refused to try the case against Jensen [leaving the verdict in the appellate court, to stand]. He is a prisoner at Kongsvinger Prison.

Recruiting for Jihad is a 2017 documentary film offering a close-up look at Ubaydullah Hussain, the Norwegian former spokesperson of the Salafi-jihadist group Profetens Ummah. For a three-year period, directors/journalists Adel Khan Farooq and Ulrik Imtiaz Rolfsen film Hussain's everyday activities promoting Jihadism until Norwegian authorities suddenly arrest him for providing material support of terrorism by recruiting for ISIS.

Lars Harnes is a Norwegian outlaw biker, gangster and senior member of the Bandidos Motorcycle Club.
