The American Elm cultivar Ulmus americana 'Deadfree' (originally known simply as '76') was listed by the Urban Forestry Administration (UFA) of the District Department of Transportation in Washington, D.C., as one of its "street trees" in 2008. [1] However, the UFA currently has no documentation to support it, and thus the entry may be spurious.

The tree is almost certainly synonymous with 'DED-FREE', a tree at the Arnold Arboretum, Harvard University, obtained from the Princeton Nursery, Princeton, New Jersey in 1973, cloned from the only survivor (late 1940s) among a grove of elms following natural devastation by Dutch elm disease, and subsequently proved resistant by artificial inoculations. However, the tree was neither offered for public sale nor distribution.

The name was never validly published and the originator has suggested that it not be validated. [2]

The genus first appeared in the Miocene geological period about 20 million years ago, originating in what is now central Asia. Ulmus americana, generally known as the American elm or, less commonly, as the white elm or water elm, is a species of elm native to eastern North America, naturally occurring from Nova Scotia west to Alberta and Montana, and south to Florida and central Texas. The American elm is an extremely hardy tree that can withstand winter temperatures as low as −42 °C. Trees in areas unaffected by Dutch elm disease (DED) can live for several hundred years. A prime example of the species was the Sauble Elm, which grew beside the banks of the Sauble River in Ontario, Canada, to a height of 43 m (140 ft), with a d.b.h of 196 cm (6.43 ft) before succumbing to DED; when it was felled in 1968, a tree-ring count established that it had germinated in 1701.

Dutch elm disease fungal disease of elm trees spread by beetles

Dutch elm disease (DED) is caused by a member of the sac fungi (Ascomycota) affecting elm trees, and is spread by elm bark beetles. Although believed to be originally native to Asia, the disease was accidentally introduced into America and Europe, where it has devastated native populations of elms that did not have resistance to the disease. It has also reached New Zealand. The name "Dutch elm disease" refers to its identification in 1921 and later in the Netherlands by Dutch phytopathologists Bea Schwarz and Christine Buisman, who both worked with Professor Johanna Westerdijk. The disease affects species in the genera Ulmus and Zelkova; therefore it is not specific to the Dutch elm hybrid.

Ulmus 'New Horizon' is an American hybrid cultivar raised by the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF), from a crossing of the Japanese Elm clone W43-8 = 'Reseda' with Siberian Elm clone W426 grown from seed collected from a street tree at Yankton, South Dakota. Ulmus 'Urban' is an American hybrid elm cultivar selected from the progeny of a controlled crossing of the Siberian Elm Ulmus pumila with the Dutch clone '148' in 1958 by Toru Arisumi of the USDA at Columbus, Ohio. Clone '148' had been sent to the US from the Netherlands in 1952 by Johanna Went, leader of the elm research team at the Willie Commelin Scholten Phytopathology Laboratory in Baarn.

Ulmus 'Morton' is an elm cultivar cloned from a putative intraspecific hybrid planted at the Morton Arboretum in 1924, which itself originated as seed collected from a tree at the Arnold Arboretum in Massachusetts. The American Elm cultivar Ulmus americana 'Jefferson' was cloned from a tree growing near a path in front of the Freer Gallery of Art, close to the Smithsonian Institution Building on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The United States National Park Service, which had planted the tree during the 1930s, cloned it in 1993 after screening tests showed that it possessed an outstanding level of tolerance to Dutch elm disease (DED).

The Chinese Elm cultivar Ulmus parvifolia 'Emer I' or 'Emerald Isle' was cloned from a tree planted circa 1920 on the University of Georgia campus at Athens.

The Chinese Elm cultivar Ulmus parvifolia 'A. Ross Central Park' is probably the hardiest in cultivation and was patented in 1989 by David F. Karnosky. The original tree grew near the entrance to Central Park, at the junction of Fifth Avenue and 72nd Street in the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City, and died in the 1990s aged over 100 years. The cloning project was initiated in 1976 by the Arthur Ross Foundation, and executed by the School of Forestry and Wood Products, Michigan Technological University, Houghton.

The Siberian elm cultivar Ulmus pumila 'Chinkota' is from a seed-produced line of extremely cold-hardy and drought-resistant trees raised in the United States. The tree was developed from seed of the cultivar 'Dropmore' by the Horticulture & Forestry Department of South Dakota State University after World War II

The hybrid elm cultivar Ulmus 'Hamburg' was originally raised by the Plumfield Nurseries, Fremont, Nebraska, circa 1932, after its discovery by Mr. Lloyd Moffet in a bed of Siberian Elm Ulmus pumila seedlings from Tekamah. It was later marketed by Interstate Nurseries, Hamburg, Iowa, in 1948, and claimed to be a hybrid of Ulmus pumila and Ulmus americana. However it is now considered more likely that Ulmus rubra was the male parent.

The putative American Elm cultivar Ulmus americana 'College' was raised at the Wedge Nursery, Albert Lea, Minnesota, and was first listed in its catalogue of 1961. However, the tree has never been formally recognized as a valid cultivar.

The elm cultivar Ulmus × hollandica 'Blandford' was listed by the Urban Forestry Administration (UFA) of the District Department of Transportation in Washington, D.C., as one of its 'street trees' in 2008. As the UFA has no further documentation to support it, the entry may be spurious, but it is most likely the tree is the wych elm cultivar Ulmus glabra 'Superba', known in the UK as the 'Blandford Elm' and introduced to the US in the early 20th century, or possibly the hybrid cultivar Ulmus × hollandica 'Superba' present in some American collections, including Garfield Park, Washington, D.C., in the mid-20th century.

The National Elm Trial was an American volunteer effort to evaluate a range of newly developed elm cultivars as replacements for elms destroyed by Dutch elm disease (DED). The Colorado State University College of Agricultural Sciences coordinated the trial.

<i>Ulmus glabra</i> Superba Elm cultivar

The wych elm cultivar Ulmus glabraHuds. 'Superba', Blandford Elm, with unusually large leaves, was raised by Gill's of Blandford Forum, Dorset, in the early 1840s as Ulmus montana superba and was quickly distributed to other UK nurseries. It was confirmed as a form of wych, and first described, by Lindley in The Gardeners' Chronicle, 1845, later descriptions being added by Gill (1845) and Morren (1848), who called it U. montana var. superba. Morren had adopted the name 'Superba' from the Fulham nurseryman Osborne in 1844, who supplied him with the tree – presumably one of the nurseries supplied by Gill. Morren states that 'Superba', already in cultivation in England, was introduced to Belgium by Denis Henrard of Saint Walburge, Liège, that in 1848 it had been present in Belgium for only three years, and that this variety was the one described as 'Superba' by Osborne, whom Henrard had visited at his nursery in Fulham in September 1844. 'Blandford Elm', with leaves of the same dimensions, was soon for sale in the USA.
