The University of Iowa College of Pharmacy is an accredited pharmacy school located in Iowa City, Iowa. The college offers three undergraduate certificates, four areas of graduate study leading to the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree, and a four-year professional program leading to the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree. [1] University of Iowa Pharmaceuticals (UIP), an FDA-registered manufacturer, is housed within the college. UIP is the largest and longest-running university-affiliated pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in the U.S. [2]
In 2020 it was ranked 18th in the country on a list of best pharmacy schools by U.S. News & World Report . [3]
The University of Iowa Department of Pharmacy was founded in 1885, with E.L. Boerner serving as its first dean. In 1900 the college became a founding member of the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP), and shortly after changed their name to the College of Pharmacy.
In 1938 the University of Iowa established the first graduate program in hospital pharmacy in the country, and in 1963 their building moved to its current home on the west side of campus.
The college continued their achievements well through the 20th century, founding the Iowa Drug Information Service and developing the national-standard Unit Dose System in 1965, before establishing the landmark Center for Biocatalysis and Bioprocessing in 1983.
In 2009 the college was restructured, moving from three academic divisions to two departments: the Department of Pharmacy Practice and the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Experimental Therapeutics.
In 2016 the college broke ground on a new facility, set to open to students in the spring of 2020. [4]
The college is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), an independent agency recognized by the US Department of Education to accredit schools of pharmacy. [5]
Each entering class to the college consists of around 120 students. The total student body has close to 420 PharmD students and 55 PhD candidates. The program keeps over 100 faculty on staff and boasts over 850 preceptors located at 430 sites. [6]
A pharmacist, also known as a chemist in Commonwealth English, is a healthcare professional who is knowledgeable about preparation, mechanism of action, clinical usage and legislation of medications in order to dispense them safely to the public and to provide consultancy services. A pharmacist also often serves as a primary care provider in the community and offers services, such as health screenings and immunizations.
A Doctor of Pharmacy is a professional doctorate in pharmacy. In some countries, it is a proficient graduate degree to practice the profession of pharmacy or to become a clinical pharmacist. In many countries, people with their Doctor of Pharmacy are allowed to practice independently and can prescribe drugs directly to patients. A PharmD program has significant experiential and/or clinical education components in introductory and advanced levels for the safe and effective use of drugs. Experiential education prepares graduates to be practice-ready, as they already have spent a significant amount of time training in areas of direct patient care and research.

A Bachelor of Pharmacy is a graduate academic degree in the field of pharmacy. In many countries, this degree is a prerequisite for registration to practice as a pharmacist. Since both PharmB and PharmD are prerequisites to license in most Western countries they are considered equivalent. In many Western countries, foreign graduates with BPharm, PharmB, or BS Pharm practice similarly to PharmD graduates. It is analogous to an MBBS vs. an MD, where MBBS is the foreign equivalent of MD. The degree provides training to understand the properties and impacts of medicines and develop the skills required to counsel patients about their use.

The USC Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is the pharmacy school of the University of Southern California, originally established in 1905 as USC College of Pharmacy. On November 17, 2022, the University of Southern California released an announcement stating that the school will be renamed the USC Alfred E. Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and will receive a $50 million endowment for student scholarships, faculty recruitment and integrating a university-wide research infrastructure related to biomedical innovation across USC’s University Park and Health Sciences campuses. Founded in 2012, the school operates three academic programs, two of which offer doctoral degrees (in pharmacy and osteopathic medicine), and the third offers a masters degree in science.
