Uwe Eric Laufenberg (born 11 December 1960) is a German actor, stage director for play and opera, and theatre manager who has directed at international opera houses and festivals, such as Elektra at the Vienna State Opera and Parsifal at the Bayreuth Festival.

He was Intendant of the Hans Otto Theater in Potsdam, the Cologne Opera, and has been Intendant of the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden from 2014, where he staged Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen , presented at the Internationale Maifestspiele 2017.

Career

Born in Cologne, he studied from 1981 to 1983 at the Folkwang Hochschule Essen. [1] He was an assistant of Ruth Berghaus, Rudolf Noelte, Jean-Pierre Ponnelle and Peter Stein, among others. He worked first in 1983 at the Staatstheater Darmstadt. From 1985, he was an actor and Regieassistent (assistant of the stage director) at the Schauspiel Frankfurt. [1] He directed from 1988 Harald Kuhlmann  [ de ]'s Pfingstläuten, Die Gerechten by Albert Camus, Rainald Goetz' Krieg, Ferdinand Bruckner's Krankheit der Jugend  [ de ] and Rückkehr in die Wüste by Bernard Marie Koltès. In 1990, Laufenberg moved to the Theater Köln, where he directed Tankred Dorst's Merlin oder Das wüste Land  [ de ], [1] Dürrenmatt's Der Besuch der alten Dame and Goethe's Clavigo , among others. From 1992, he directed operas at international locations, such as Ariadne auf Naxos by Richard Strauss at La Monnaie, Smetana's Die verkaufte Braut at the Volksoper Wien, and Puccini's Tosca at the Grand Théâtre de Genève. He directed Ernst Krenek's Karl V. for the Bregenzer Festspiele 2008, and Mozart's Don Giovanni at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Peking. [2]

From 2004 to 2009, Laufenberg was Intendant (General Manager) of the Hans Otto Theater in Potsdam. He designed the concept Potsdam unterwegs (Potsdam on the road), presenting a production at various locations of the town. From the 2009/10 season, he managed the Cologne Opera. [3] He staged a Mozart cycle of Don Giovanni, Die Entführung aus dem Serail and La clemenza di Tito . The house earned the title Opernhaus des Jahres (Opera house of the year) in 2012. [4] He canceled his contract the same year. He wrote a novel about his experiences, titled Palermo and published in 2013. [5] [6]

From 2013 to 2015, Laufenberg directed for the Linz Opera Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen , conducted by Dennis Russell Davies. He has been Intendant of the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden from the 2014/15 season. His first production there was Die Frau ohne Schatten by Richard Strauss. [7]

In 2015 he staged Elektra by Strauss at the Vienna State Opera, conducted by Mikko Franck. He directed at the Bayreuth Festival of 2016 a new production of Parsifal . [7] [8]

His focus in Wiesbaden in the 2016/17 season has been again Wagner's Ring des Nibelungen, staged by him based on his Linz version, and conducted by Alexander Joel. It was presented twice during the Internationale Maifestspiele Wiesbaden 2017, conducted by Alexander Joel. [9] [10] Among the soloists were the Bayreuth singers Evelyn Herlitzius as Brünnhilde and Andreas Schager as both Siegmund and Siegfried. Sabina Cvilak appeared as Sieglinde, and Egils Silins as Wotan.. [11]

Franz Mazura was an Austrian bass-baritone opera singer and actor. He performed at the Bayreuth Festival from 1971 for 25 years and at the Metropolitan Opera for 15 years. He was made a Kammersänger in 1980 and an Honorary Member of the Nationaltheater Mannheim in 1990. He most often played villains and strange characters, with signature roles including Klingsor in Wagner's Parsifal. Mazura took part in world premieres, such as the double role of Dr. Schön and Jack the Ripper in the world premiere of the completed version of Alban Berg's Lulu at the Paris Opera in 1979, and as Abraham in Giorgio Battistelli's Lot in 2017. Two of his recordings received Grammy Awards. His voice was described as with dark timbre, powerful and like granite, with perfect diction. His acting ability was described as "well-supplied with vivid imaginative touches, whether deployed in comic roles or characters of inexorable malevolence. Mazura could achieve more impact with a lifted eyebrow or a belligerently thrust chin than many artists could with a ten-minute monologue." He had a long career, appearing at the Staatsoper Berlin the night before his 95th birthday.

The Internationale Maifestspiele Wiesbaden is a theater festival in Wiesbaden, Germany. Established in the late 19th century after the Bayreuth Festival, the festival is one of the most distinguished international theatre and music festivals in the world. It is presented annually in May at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden, the State Theatre of Hesse in the capital Wiesbaden. The festival currently features performances of operas, ballets, plays and musicals. Visiting companies, mostly from European theaters, present their recent productions along with performances of the Theater Wiesbaden. Concerts from a wide array of music genres are featured as well as artistic circus acts and modern dance presentations. <i>Jahrhundertring</i>

The Jahrhundertring was the production of Richard Wagner's Ring cycle, Der Ring des Nibelungen, at the Bayreuth Festival in 1976, celebrating the centenary of both the festival and the first performance of the complete cycle. The festival was directed by Wolfgang Wagner and the production was created by the French team of conductor Pierre Boulez, stage director Patrice Chéreau, stage designer Richard Peduzzi, costume designer Jacques Schmidt and lighting designer André Diot. The cycle was shown first in 1976, then in the following years until 1980. It was filmed for television in 1979 and 1980. While the first performance caused "a near-riot" for its brash modernity, the staging established a standard, termed Regietheater, for later productions.

Norma Sharp is an American operatic soprano. She is known for singing Mozart and Richard Strauss, but also sang Wagner roles at the Bayreuth Festival. She worked mostly in Germany, made an international career, and has been a professor of voice at the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" from 1992.

Siegfried Köhler was a German conductor and composer of classical music. He worked as general music director of opera houses such as Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden and the Royal Swedish Opera. Köhler conducted premieres of works by Hans Werner Henze and Volker David Kirchner, among others, and revived rarely performed operas. He also composed music for the stage and taught at universities of music in Cologne and Saarbrücken.

Lance Ryan is a Canadian operatic tenor, who has worked from Germany since 2005. He is known for singing Siegfried in Wagner's Der Ring des Nibelungen, which he performed at opera houses in Europe including the Bayreuth Festival. He performed the title roles of Verdi's Otello and Britten's Peter Grimes.

Lioba Braun is a German opera singer and academic teacher at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln and the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München. Based at the Nationaltheater Mannheim, she has appeared mostly in mezzo-soprano parts at major opera houses and festivals. She became internationally known appearing as Brangäne at the Bayreuth Festival in 1994, and performed the soprano part of Isolde on stage first in 2012.

Sabina Cvilak is a Slovenian operatic soprano, who has appeared internationally, mostly at opera houses in Europe and the United States. She is also known for singing concerts and recitals, such as Britten's War Requiem in London on the centenary of the composer's birth.

Johannes Martin Kränzle is a German baritone in opera and concert who has made an international career. For years a member of the Oper Frankfurt, he was chosen as Singer of the Year in 2011 after creating the leading role in Wolfgang Rihm's Dionysos at the Salzburg Festival. He made his debut at the Royal Opera House as Don Alfonso in Mozart's Così fan tutte, and at the Bayreuth Festival as Beckmesser in Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg in 2017.

He performed leading roles of both the baritone repertoire such as Wagner's Sachs in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and bass roles such as Mozart's Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte. In recordings, he has focused on operas of the early 20th century, such as Busoni's Turandot and Schulhoff's Flammen in its 1994 premiere.
