V Ramgopal Rao is an Indian academic serving as the vice chancellor of Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani. He was previously the director of IIT, Delhi for six years during 2016-2021. [1] [2]

He was the P.K.Kelkar Chair Professor in Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay before joining IIT Delhi as the Director. Rao has more than 500 publications in various journals, and over 50 patents in the areas of Electron devices and Nanoelectronics. [3] Rao was the first elected chairman for the Indian Section of the American Nano Society. [4] He is also the recipient of over 35 honors and awards in the country and abroad including the Swarnajayanti Fellowship, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, Infosys Prize, Techno-Visionary award from the Indian Semiconductor Association in 2020,the IBM faculty award in 2007 and the IEEE EDS Education award in 2020 besides many others. He is a Fellow of IEEE, a Fellow of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), Indian Academy of Sciences (IASc), National Academy of Sciences (NASI) and the Indian National Science Academy (INSA). [9] [10] [11] [12] [13]

Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) director

During Rao's tenure as Director, IIT Delhi has seen an unprecedented growth. IIT Delhi received the Institution of Eminence (IoE) status in 2018 under his leadership, one of the first three Govt institutions to be selected for this recognition following a tough selection process. [14]

IIT Delhi's Endowment fund initiative launched under his leadership on 31 October 2019 by the Hon'ble President, Govt of India set a new benchmark for all other academic institutions in the country to follow. [15] [16] This is the first ever endowment created by any institution in India. Ministry of Education has also issued a directive to all other educational institutions in the country to follow the IIT Delhi model. [17]

Early life and education

Rao was born in a remote village Kollapur (Telangana) and he completed his schooling from Govt Upper Primary School Kollapur from 1st to 10th Std and then completed his Intermediate from Govt RID Junior College Kollapur. [18] Also, Mr.Rao completed all his education in Telugu Medium right from his 1st Std to 12th Std. Rao obtained his B.Tech degree in "Electronics and Instrumentation" from Kakatiya University in 1986 with distinction and his M.Tech from IIT Bombay in 1991. He obtained his Doctorate in Nanoelectronics from Bundeswehr University Munich, Germany in 1997 (in a short span of two years) and was a Post-doctoral Fellow at the University of California Los Angeles from 1997 to 1998. [19]

Career

Rao spent 18 years as a faculty member at IIT Bombay before moving to IIT Delhi as the Director. Rao has also held short term visiting positions in University of California, Los Angeles in May–July 2001 in the USA. After this, he worked for short periods of times at several universities all over the world, including Tokyo Institute of Technology, Monash University, The University of Calabria in Italy, Georgia Institute of Technology, Nanyang Technological University, University of Alberta, and McGill University. [20] He was the Head of the Centre for Nanotechnology and Science at IIT Bombay between December 2005 and January 2007. [21] He was P.K.Kelkar Chair Professor for Nanotechnology at IIT Bombay before moving to IIT Delhi as Director. [22]

Awards

The Infosys Prize 2013 was awarded for Rao's "wide-ranging contributions to nanoscale electronics, for insightfully integrating chemistry with mechanics and electronics to invent new functional devices, and for innovation and entrepreneurship in creating technologies and products of societal value."

Uday B. Desai is an Indian academician and the founding director of Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad. He is a Professor Emeritus in Electrical engineering Chancellor ICFAI Dehradun, Chancellor Anurag University, Hyderabad Honorary Distinguished Professor Plaksha University and a Strategic Consultant for TSDSI. He served as the director of IIT Hyderabad from June 2009 to July 2019, and is credited for taking it to rank among the top 10 engineering colleges in India in the NIRF engineering ranking. He was mentor director of IIT Bhilai from May 2016 to February 2017 and mentor director for IIIT Chittoor 2013–2018.

Chetan Eknath Chitnis is an Indian scientist in the field of malaria research. He is the head of the Malaria Parasite Biology and Vaccines Unit at the Institut Pasteur in Paris and an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences (2009) as well as Indian National Science Academy (2014). He received the Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Award in 2004 and the Infosys Prize in Life Sciences 2010. Chitnis is the former principal investigator of the malaria research group at the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) in New Delhi.

Satyajit Mayor (born 1963) is an Indian biologist. He serves as director of the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore. Mayor is the former director of the Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine (inStem) at Bangalore, which has a focus on the study of stem cell and regenerative biology.

Ayyappanpillai Ajayaghosh is a research scientist/academician in the domain of interdisciplinary chemistry, and the former Director of the National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology. He is known for his studies on supramolecular assemblies, organogels, photoresponsive materials, chemosensory and security materials systems and is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies viz. the National Academy of Sciences, India, Indian National Science Academy and the Indian Academy of Sciences as well as The World Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Chemical Sciences in 2007. He is the first chemist to receive the Infosys Science Prize for physical sciences, awarded by the Infosys Science Foundation. He received the TWAS Prize of The World Academy of Sciences in 2013 and the Goyal prize in 2019.

Partha Pratim Chakrabarti (Chakraborty) is an Indian computer scientist. He is a distinguished professor and the former director of IIT Kharagpur. Dr. Chakrabarti has made pioneering research contributions and solved a number of open problems. His work has been incorporated in standard text books as well as industry level tools of major international companies. He has published more than 200 papers in international journals and conferences and supervised two dozen PhD students. He is also an honorary awardee of Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, the highest science award in India, for the engineering category in 2000.

Supratik Chakraborty is an Indian computer scientist. He is currently Bajaj Group Chair Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.

Roop Mallik is an Indian biophysicist who works on nanoscale molecular motor proteins that transport material such as viruses, mitochondria, endosomes etc. inside living cells. The motors, such as kinesin and dynein generate forces of pico-newton order to carry our various cellular processes namely cell division, vesicular transport, endocytosis, molecular tethering etc. His lab is working to understand how motor proteins help in degradation and clearance of pathogens, and also how these motors work inside the liver to maintain systemic lipid homeostasis in the animal. Mallik is currently a professor at the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.

Sanghamitra Bandyopadhyay is an Indian scientist specializing in computational biology. A professor at the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, she is a Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize winner in Engineering Science for 2010, IInfosys Prize 2017 laureate in the Engineering and Computer Science category and TWAS Prize winner for Engineering Sciences in 2018. Her research is mainly in the areas of evolutionary computation, pattern recognition, machine learning and bioinformatics. Since 1 August 2015, she has been the Director of the Indian Statistical Institute, and she would oversee the functioning of all five centres of Indian Statistical Institute located at Kolkata, Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai, and Tezpur besides several other Statistical Quality Control & Operation Research Units spread across India. She is the first woman Director of the Indian Statistical Institute. Currently she is on the Prime Ministers' Science, Technology and Innovation Advisory Council. In 2022 she was given the Padma Shri award for Science and Engineering by the Government of India.

Sandeep Verma is an Indian bioorganic chemist and chemical biologist, and a Professor in the Department of Chemistry at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IITK). At IITK, he heads Sandeep Verma's Research Group in the areas of ordered peptide assemblies, metal-mediated nanoscale systems, programmable soft matter for neuronal regeneration, novel antimicrobials, and small molecule-stem cell modulation. He is an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), the Indian Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, India, and the Indian National Academy of Engineering. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 2010, for his contributions to Chemical Sciences.

Devang Vipin Khakhar is an Indian chemical engineer and the former director of the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. He is known for his pioneering researches on polymerization and is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies viz. Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and National Academy of Sciences, India as well as Indian National Academy of Engineering. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Engineering Sciences in 1997.

Subhasis Chaudhuri is an Indian electrical engineer and former director at the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. He is a former K. N. Bajaj Chair Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering of IIT Bombay. He is known for his pioneering studies on computer vision and is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies viz. the National Academy of Sciences, India, Indian Academy of Sciences, and Indian National Science Academy. He is also a fellow of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the Indian National Academy of Engineering. Mukta Ghate Farooq is an Indian metallurgical engineer of Marathi descent working for the IBM Corporation in Hopewell Junction, New York. She was named a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2016 for her contributions to 3D integration and interconnect technology. She is currently a Distinguished Research Staff Member at IBM Research and has over 220 issued US patents including patent numbers 10199315, 20180061749, and 8367543. Dulal Panda is an Indian cell biologist and the chair professor at the department of biosciences and bioengineering of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. Presently, he is the Director of NIPER, SAS Nagar (Mohali). Known for his studies on microtubule dynamics and FtsZ assembly dynamics, Panda is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Sciences, India. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to biosciences in 2005.

Pramod P. Wangikar is an Indian chemical engineer and a professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. Known for his studies in the field of bioenergy, Wangikar is a recipient of the Sartorius India Chemcon Distinguished Speaker Award of the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to biosciences in 2006.

Debdeep Mukhopadhyay is an Indian cryptographer and professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur. He was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award for Science and Technology, the highest science award in India, in 2021 for his contributions to micro-architectural security and cryptographic engineering. Debdeep Mukhopadhyay's research interests include Hardware security, Cryptographic Engineering, Design Automation of Cryptosystems, VLSI of Cryptosystems, and Cryptography. He has authored several textbooks, including Cryptography and network security, which has been cited 1227 times, according to Google Scholar. He was elevated to the Fellow of Indian National Academy of Engineers in 2021.

Kanishka Biswas is an Associate Professor in the New Chemistry Unit at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore with research interests focused on renewable energy and clean environment. The areas in which he has worked include solid state inorganic chemistry of metal chalcogenides, thermoelectric materials, 2D layered materials, topological insulators.

Subimal Ghosh is Institute Chair Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering and Convener of the Interdisciplinary Program in Climate Studies at Indian Institute of Technology Bombay with research interests in hydrology and hydro-climatology. He obtained PhD degree in 2007 from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore on a thesis titled "Hydrologic Impacts of Climate Change: Uncertainty Modelling", and ME degree in 2004 from the same institute.
