He is regarded as one of the most influential hip hop artists of his generation, and is often mentioned among the greatest rappers of all time. He was signed by American rapper Birdman to his record label Cash Money Records at age eleven, becoming the youngest member of the label. In the following years, he emerged as the flagship artist of Cash Money Records before ending his association with the imprint in June 2018.

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and raised in Decatur, Georgia, he began his musical career as a member of the preteen-boy band N-Toon, which was formed by Joyce Irby in 1996. He has produced and written material for other artists, and voice acted in film and television. In 2005 he founded the record label Nappy Boy Entertainment.
