Vaikom Viswan is a politician from the State of Kerala in India. He was the Convener of Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala and member of the Central Committee of Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM). [2] [3]
He was born on 28 October 1939 in Vadayar village, Bhoothapuyam Amsham of Thalayolaparambu Panchayath, Vaikom in Kottayam district, in an ordinary family to Padmanabhan Nair and Karthyayani Amma. He is married to Prof. Geetha and has two children-Nisha and Naveen. [1]
Vaikom Viswan entered politics as an activist of Student Federation (SF), which is the precursor of Students' Federation of India (SFI). He has joined the Communist Party of India in 1957. He was President and then Secretary of the Kerala Students' Federation (KSF) and also served as the president of Kerala State Youth Federation (KSYF). He was in the forefront in taking up the famous Naxal Rajan agitation throughout Kerala during the emergency. Vaikom Viswan was subjected to brutal attacks from members of the Community Party of India during the split in 1964. He was also severely beaten by police authorities in many occasions during the early years of his political struggle and student protests. In 1978, he was elected to the State Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He got elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly in 1980 from Ettumanoor Constituency in Kottayam District of Kerala State. He held the position of the District Committee Secretary of CPI (M), Kottayam district for about 20 years. In 2005, he was elected to the State Secretariat of CPI (M) in Kerala. In 2009 he was elected to the Central Committee of the CPI (M).
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (abbreviated as CPI(M)/CPIM/CPM) is a communist political party in India. It is the largest communist party in India in terms of membership and electoral seats and one of the national parties of India. The 34 years of Left Front rule (where CPIM was the Largest Party) in West Bengal was the longest-serving democratically elected communist-led government in the world. It had been the third largest party of Parliament of India for many decades. The party emerged from a split in the CPI in 1964. As of 2023, CPI(M) is a part of ruling alliances in three states — the LDF in Kerala, Mahagathbandhan in Bihar, and the SPA in Tamil Nadu and CPIM has representation in the legislative assemblies of 8 states.
The Left Democratic Front (LDF) also known as Left Front (Kerala) is an alliance of left-wing political parties in the state of Kerala, India. It is the current ruling political alliance of Kerala, since 2016. It is one of the two major political alliances in Kerala, the other being Indian National Congress-led United Democratic Front, each of which has been in power alternately for the last four decades. LDF has won the elections to the State Legislature of Kerala in the years 1980, 1987, 1996, 2006, 2016 and had a historic re-election in 2021 where an incumbent government was re-elected for first time in 40 years. LDF has won 6 out of 10 elections since the formation of the alliance in 1980. The alliance consists of CPI(M), CPI and various smaller parties.

Pinarayi Vijayan is an Indian Communist politician who is the current Chief Minister of Kerala, serving since 25 May 2016. A member of the Politburo of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), he is the longest-serving secretary of the Kerala State Committee of the CPI(M) (1998–2015). He also served in the government of Kerala as Minister of Electric Power and Co-operatives from 1996 to 1998. Vijayan won a seat in the May 2016 Kerala Legislative Assembly election as the CPI(M) candidate for Dharmadom constituency and was selected as the leader of the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and became the 12th Chief Minister of Kerala. Binoy Viswam is a Member of Parliament from Kerala representing the Communist Party of India (CPI). He is the National Secretary of CPI and Working President of the All India Trade Union Congress. He was the Forest Minister in the Government of Kerala during 2006–2011. He was earlier elected to the Kerala Legislative Assembly from Nadapuram constituency and served as Member, Estimates Committee; Chairman, Assurance Committee; and was one of the five members of the Constituency Delimitation Committee. Rajaji Mathew Thomas was the leader of All India Youth Federation and selected as national general secretary. He became the vice President of World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY), based at Budapest from 1985 to 1996.
