Valentine's day mascara is an 2023 artwork by Banksy that appeared on the side of a house in Margate, Kent, on 14 February, Valentine's Day, 2023. The work depicts a woman shutting a man in a refrigerator.
The piece is painted on the side of a house on Park Place, to the rear of Grosvenor Place in Margate. [1] It depicts an injured woman with a missing tooth and 'swollen eye' dressed as a housewife from the 1950s shutting a man in a freezer. [2] [3] She is dressed in a blue apron with yellow washing up gloves. [4]
The work incorporates a refrigerator that had been abandoned in the street next to the house. [2]
Thanet District Council removed the fridge after the appearance of the artwork, [2] claiming the "fridge freezer which is believed to have been part of the installation has been removed by council operatives on the grounds of safety as it was on public land", and would be returned once it had been 'made safe'. [2] Other items by the piece were removed including an empty beer bottle, a broken garden chair and a crate. [4] [5]
The Thanet District Council said they would contact the property owner to discuss the preservation of the artwork. [2] [4] The owner subsequently contacted an art gallery to help preserve the artwork and said that she was "trying to balance the needs of the tenant and the local art community". [5]
The work was posted by Banksy on his Instagram page. It has been interpreted as statement about violence against women. [2] Local residents expressed shock that the area had been cleaned by the council so quickly, with complaints about rubbish usually taking weeks to resolve. [2]

A refrigerator, colloquially fridge, is a commercial and home appliance consisting of a thermally insulated compartment and a heat pump that transfers heat from its inside to its external environment so that its inside is cooled to a temperature below the room temperature. Refrigeration is an essential food storage technique around the world. The low temperature lowers the reproduction rate of bacteria, so the refrigerator reduces the rate of spoilage. A refrigerator maintains a temperature a few degrees above the freezing point of water. The optimal temperature range for perishable food storage is 3 to 5 °C. A freezer is a specialized refrigerator, or portion of a refrigerator, that maintains its contents’ temperature below the freezing point of water. The refrigerator replaced the icebox, which had been a common household appliance for almost a century and a half. The United States Food and Drug Administration recommends that the refrigerator be kept at or below 4 °C (40 °F) and that the freezer be regulated at −18 °C (0 °F).

A refrigerator death is death by suffocation in a refrigerator or other air-tight appliance. Because, by design, such appliances are air-tight when closed, a person entrapped inside will have a low supply of oxygen. Early refrigerators could only be opened from the outside, making accidental entrapment a possibility, particularly of children playing with discarded appliances; many such deaths have been recorded. Modern designs close with a magnetic mechanism that can be opened from the inside, reducing the danger of accidental entrapment.
