Valentine Waltz (foaled 14 February 1996) was an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old she was initially trained in Ireland where she failed to win in four races although she did finish third in the Marble Hill Stakes. Later in the year she was moved to England and improved, winning a minor race and being placed in both the Rockingham Stakes and the Rockfel Stakes. In the following year she developed into one of the best fillies of her generation in Europe, winning the Nell Gwyn Stakes and the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches as well as finishing third in both the 1000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes. After her retirement from racing she became a broodmare and had modest success as a dam of winners.

Background

Valentine Waltz was a bay mare bred in Ireland by the County Limerick-based Kilfrush Stud. As a yearling she was consigned to the Tattersalls Houghton Yearling Sales on 1 October and was bought for 75,000 guineas by Kern/Lillingston Associates. [2] The filly entered the ownership of the Kirby Maher Syndicate and was sent into training with Aidan O'Brien at Ballydoyle.

She was from the twentieth crop of foals sired by Be My Guest, an American-bred stallion who won the Waterford Crystal Mile when trained in Ireland by Vincent O'Brien. Be My Guest's other offspring included Assert, Pentire Go and Go, Luth Enchantee and On The House. [3] Her dam, Save Me The Waltz, won one race in France and became a successful broodmare who also produced the Matron Stakes winner Sense of Style. She was a half-sister to Last Tycoon and closely related to Assert, Bikala and Eurobird. [4]

Racing career

1998: two-year-old season

On her racecourse debut Valentine Waltz started the 6/4 for a maiden race over five furlongs at Cork Racecourse on 26 April but finished only fourth of the eleven runners behind Show Me The Money. Seventeen days later she went off favourite for a similar event at Navan Racecourse but was beaten again, coming home third behind the colts My Chief and Rainbows Forever. Despite her two defeats she was stepped up in class for the Listed Marble Hill Stakes at the Curragh on 23 May. Starting a 25/1 outsider she stayed on well in the closing stages to take third place behind Access All Areas and Coralita, beaten half a length by the winner. [5] The filly was dropped back to maiden class at the Curragh on 27 June but disappointed as she was beaten more than nine lengths into fourth place in a race won by Fear and Greed.

Shortly after her second defeat at the Curragh Valentine Waltz was transferred to England and joined the stable of John Gosden. On her first run for her new trainer the filly started 5/2 second choice for a seven furlong maiden at Brighton Racecourse on 30 September. Ridden by Daragh O'Donohoe she recorded her first victory as she led from the start and won "comfortably" by four lengths. [6] Ten days later at Doncaster Racecourse she finished strongly to take third place behind the colts Undeterred and Indiana Legend in the Listed Rockingham Stakes. On 17 October she was stepped up to Group 2 class for the Rockfel Stakes at Newmarket Racecourse and produced her best performance of the season. Starting a 20/1 outsider she overcame interference in the final furlong to finish second of the fourteen runners, beaten one and a quarter lengths by Hula Angel.

1999: three-year-old season

On 13 April Valentine Waltz was ridden by Frankie Dettori when she began her second campaign in the Group 3 Nell Gwyn Stakes (a trial race for the 1,000 Guineas) over seven furlongs at Newmarket and started the 7/2 favourites against ten opponents. After racing just behind the leaders she went to the front approaching the final furlong and accelerated away from her rivals to win by three lengths. [7] In the 1999 1000 Guineas at Newmarket on 2 May the filly was partnered by Ray Cochrane and went off at odds of 11/1 in a field of 22. Racing up the far side of the track, she briefly took the lead a furlong out but was headed in the closing stages and finished third, beaten half a length and a short head by Wince and Wannabe Grand who raced up the opposite side of the course.

Two weeks after her run in the Guineas Valentine Waltz was sent to contest the French equivalent, the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches over 1600 metres at Longchamp Racecourse. With Cochrane again in the saddle she started the 4.3/1 third favourite behind Moiava (Critérium de Maisons-Laffitte) and Rangoon Ruby, while the best-fancied of the other eleven runners included Calando (May Hill Stakes), Comillas (Prix des Réservoirs) and Venize (Prix de la Grotte). After turning tinto the straight in seventh place, Valentine Waltz produced a strong late run, took the lead inside the last 200 metres, and won by two lengths from the 42/1 outsider Karmifira. [8] John Gosden commented "They went a cracking pace and I liked the way she won. She ran a grand race in the Guineas from a terrible draw... She is a tough little thing to come back and run like this after her hard race in the Guineas". [9]

At Royal Ascot on 16 June Valentine Waltz was partnered by Pat Eddery when she started second favourite for the Coronation Stakes. After being restrained in the early stages ahe finished well without being able to reach the lead and dead-heated for third with Wannabe Grand behind Balisada and Golden Silca. Valentine Waltz did not race again and was retired at the end of the year.

Breeding record

After her retirement from racing, Valentine Waltz became a broodmare for the American breeder George Strawbridge. She produced at least seven foals and two winners between 2002 and 2014:

Fair Salinia was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning the classic Oaks Stakes in 1978. In a racing career which lasted from September 1977 until September 1978 she won four of her eight races. As a two-year-old in 1977 she won on her debut before finishing second in the Cheveley Park Stakes. As a three-year-old she finished second in the 1000 Guineas before being moved up in distance and winning the Oaks, Irish Oaks and Yorkshire Oaks. She was retired to stud at the end of the season and had some influence as a broodmare. She died in 2004 at the age of twenty-nine.

Exclusive was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a juvenile, she won a strongly-contested race on her debut and the finished third in the Fillies' Mile. As a three-year-old in 1998 she finished third in the classic 1000 Guineas before recording her biggest win in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. After her retirement from racing, she became a very successful broodmare, being the ancestor of major winners including Chic and Integral.

Immortal Verse is an Irish-bred, French-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old she showed promise by winning on her debut and finishing second in the Prix d'Aumale. Her early form in 2011 was disappointing as she was beaten in her first two races and refused to enter the starting stalls in the 1000 Guineas. She then made rapid improvement, winning the Prix de Sandringham and the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot before defeating a strong international field in the Prix Jacques le Marois. In the following season she made rapid improvement and recorded a 16/1 upset victory in the Group One Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. She was beaten in her three remaining races and was retired to become a broodmare where she had some success as a dam of winners.

Sophisticat was a Kentucky-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. A daughter of Storm Cat out of the champion filly Serena's Song she was sold for $3.7 million as a yearling and raced in Europe for the Coolmore Stud organization. Racing as a two-year-old, she won only one minor race but was placed in the Queen Mary Stakes, Silver Flash Stakes, Lowther Stakes, Moyglare Stud Stakes and Cheveley Park Stakes. She was at her best as a two-year-old when she won on her debut, finished third in the May Hill Stakes and then recorded her biggest success in the Fillies' Mile at Ascot Racecourse. She struggled as a three-year-old and failed to win in three races. She remained in training at four and won one minor race from five attempts. After her retirement from racing she became a broodmare in Germany.

Mehthaaf was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed great promise as a two-year-old in 1993, winning on her second racecourse appearance and going on to finish third in both the Lowther Stakes and the Prix Marcel Boussac. As a three-year-old she won the Nell Gwyn Stakes and ran fourth when favourite for the 1000 Guineas before winning the Irish 1000 Guineas. Later in the season she produced arguably her best performance with an emphatic victory over male opponents in the Celebration Mile. Hula Angel was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning the Irish 1000 Guineas in 1999. As a two-year-old she showed steady improvement in six races, winning a maiden on her third appearance and finishing third in the Oh So Sharp Stakes before winning the Group Two Rockfel Stakes. In the following spring she finished sixth in the 1000 Guineas before recording her biggest win in the Irish equivalent at the Curragh. She was well beaten in two subsequent races and was retired from racing at the end of the year. Hula Angel finished ahead of the 1,000 Guineas winner Wince in three of their four racecourse meetings. She has had some success a dam of winners.

Katies was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After recording one minor win as a two-year-old she reached her peak in the spring and summer of the following year, taking major prizes in the Irish 1000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes. At the end of the year she was rated the best three-year-old filly trained in Britain. After the end of her racing career she became a successful broodmare whose foals had great success in Japan.

Arctique Royale was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old she made only two appearances, winning a maiden race at the Curragh on her debut and then taking the Moyglare Stud Stakes at the same track. She was beaten on her first run of 1982 but then recorded her biggest win in the Irish 1000 Guineas. She was beaten in her last four races and was retired from racing at the end of the year. She had considerable success as a broodmare.

Helen Street was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old she was rated the best British-trained filly of her generation after winning the Prix du Calvados and finishing second under top weight in the Fillies' Mile. In the following year she was a top-class performer over middle distances, winning the Irish Oaks, finishing third in the Yorkshire Oaks and fourth in both the Champion Stakes and the Washington, D.C. International Stakes. After her retirement from racing she had a successful career a broodmare, producing Street Cry and Helsinki, the dam of Shamardal.

Winona was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for her win in the Irish Oaks. In a racing career which lasted from July 1997 until November 1998 she raced in four different countries and compiled a record of two wins one second and one third from nine starts. As a two-year-old in 1997 she showed considerable promise when winning on her first appearance and later finished second in the Group 3 C L Weld Park Stakes. In the following year she finished fourth in the Irish 1000 Guineas and third in the Coronation Stakes before being stepped up in distance and recording an emphatic win in the Irish Oaks. She was well beaten in her last two races and was retired from racing at the end of the year. Her record as a broodmare was poor.

Rebelline was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She won six of her eleven races in a racing career which lasted from October 2000 until May 2002. As a juvenile she won on her debut and then finished second to Vinnie Roe in the Eyrefield Stakes. In the following year she won the Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial and the Pretty Polly Stakes as well as finishing third in the Prix de l'Opera. She reached her peak as a four-year-old in 2002 when she was undefeated in three starts, taking the Gladness Stakes, Mooresbridge Stakes and Tattersalls Gold Cup. After her retirement from racing she had considerable success as a dam of winners.

Eva Luna (IRE) was an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. At the age of two in 1994 she was one of the best horses of her generation in Ireland when she won her first five races including the Silver Flash Stakes, Railway Stakes and Phoenix Stakes. Her winning run came to an end when she finished third in the Moyglare Stud Stakes, and in 1993 she failed to recapture her juvenile form. After her retirement from racing she became a broodmare and produced a few minor winners. The last of her recorded offspring was foaled in 2010.

Quarter Moon was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 2001 she showed considerable promise, taking the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes on the second of her two starts. In the following year she failed to win but showed top class form to finish second in four Group 1 races: the Irish 1,000 Guineas, the Epsom Oaks, the Irish Oaks and the Nassau Stakes. After retiring from racing at the end of the year she became a successful broodmare whose foals have included the Pretty Polly Stakes winner Diamondsandrubies.

Ta Rib was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. Despite failing to win as a juvenile in 1995 she showed promise as he was placed in both her races. In the following spring she won a maiden race and then recorded her biggest success when recording an upset victory in the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches. She failed to win again but ran well in defeat in three subsequent races. As a broodmare she produced several minor winners but no top-class winners.
