The 1999 1000 Guineas Stakes was a horse race held at Newmarket Racecourse on Sunday 2 May 1999. It was the 186th running of the 1000 Guineas. As the traditional Rowley Mile course was being redeveloped the race was run on Newmarket's July Course.
The winner was Khalid Abdullah's Wince, a British-bred bay filly trained at Newmarket in Suffolk by Henry Cecil and ridden by Kieren Fallon. Wince's victory was the first in the race for her owner. Cecil had won the race five times before with One in a Million (1979), Fairy Footsteps (1981), Oh So Sharp (1985), Bosra Sham (1996) and Sleepytime (1997), the last of which had given Fallon his only previous winner in the race. Wince's win was also the first and only British classic success for Wince's sire Selkirk.
The race attracted a field of twenty-two runners, nineteen trained in the United Kingdom, two in Ireland and one in France. The favourite was Wince, who had won three of her seven races including the Fred Darling Stakes on her most recent appearance. The Irish challengers were Sunspangled, trained by Aidan O'Brien at Ballydoyle who had won the Fillies' Mile at Ascot Racecourse in September and the Tommy Stack-trained Fear And Greed, runner-up in the Moyglare Stud Stakes. France was represented by Moiava, who had defeated colts when winning the Critérium de Maisons-Laffitte. The Godolphin Racing stable entered Pescara, who had been off the racecourse since finishing fifth in the Prix Morny and Fairy Queen who was unbeaten in two minor races. The other runners included Wannabe Grand who had won both the Cherry Hinton Stakes and the Cheveley Park Stakes in 1998, as well as Circle of Gold (Prestige Stakes), Atlantic Destiny (Sirenia Stakes), Valentine Waltz (Nell Gwyn Stakes), Golden Silca (Mill Reef Stakes) and Hula Angel (Rockfel Stakes).
Wince headed the betting at odds of 4/1 ahead of Moiava (5/1), Sunspangled (7/1) and Pescara (10/1). [1]
At the start of the race, the fillies split into two groups on either side of the straight: Pescara led the group on the far side (the left-hand side from the jockeys' viewpoint) whilst Fairy Queen headed the stand-side group. As the early leaders faded the two groups merged with a quarter of a mile to run. Valentine Waltz, who had raced on the far side, briefly took the overall lead but was quickly challenged by Wince and Wannabe Grand for the stands-side runners. Wince gained the advantage in the final furlong and won by half a length and a head from Wannabe Grand and Valentine Waltz. [1]

Wince was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from June 1998 to May 1999 she ran nine times and won four races. After winning twice from six starts as a two-year-old, she won the Fred Darling Stakes at Newbury. On her next appearance Wince won the Classic 1000 Guineas at Newmarket Racecourse. On her only subsequent appearance she finished unplaced in the Irish 1000 Guineas at the Curragh three weeks later. At the end of her three-year-old season she was retired from racing to become a successful broodmare.
Marling was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the leading European two-year-olds of 1991 when she was unbeaten in four races including the Queen Mary Stakes and Cheveley Park Stakes. In the following year she was narrowly beaten in the 1000 Guineas but went on to win the Irish 1000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes and Sussex Stakes. She was retired to stud at the end of 1992 and has had some success as a dam of winners.

In a racing career which lasted from May 1998 until November 1999, she won four races and was placed five times from sixteen starts. She was one of the best juvenile fillies in Britain in 1998 when she won the Empress Stakes, Cherry Hinton Stakes and Cheveley Park Stakes as well as finishing second in the Lowther Stakes. In the following year she finished second in the 1000 Guineas on her seasonal debut and went on to win the Flying Fillies' Stakes, as well as being placed in the Coronation Stakes, Oak Tree Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes. She was retired from racing to become a broodmare and produced at least seven winners.

As a two-year-old, she won on her debut but was beaten in her next two races before recording her most important victory in the Group One Fillies' Mile at Ascot Racecourse. In the following year, she was campaigned exclusively in Group One events and failed to win, although she did finish second in the Irish Oaks. She has made little impact as a broodmare.

In the following year she was the beaten favourite for the 1000 Guineas but won the Strensall Stakes. She remained in training for two more seasons, winning the Pipalong Stakes and two editions of the Blandford Stakes. Apart from her wins, she reached the frame in the Coronation Stakes, Pretty Polly Stakes, Nassau Stakes and Prix Jean Romanet. At the end of her racing career she became broodmare for her owner, the Cheveley Park Stud.

Hula Angel was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning the Irish 1000 Guineas in 1999. As a two-year-old she showed steady improvement in six races, winning a maiden on her third appearance and finishing third in the Oh So Sharp Stakes before winning the Group Two Rockfel Stakes. In the following spring she finished sixth in the 1000 Guineas before recording her biggest win in the Irish equivalent at the Curragh. She was well beaten in two subsequent races and was retired from racing at the end of the year. Hula Angel finished ahead of the 1,000 Guineas winner Wince in three of their four racecourse meetings. She has had some success a dam of winners.
Samitar is a British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare who raced in four countries and won major races in England, Ireland and the United States. She showed good form as a juvenile in 2011, winning the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot and a valuable sales race at Newmarket Racecourse as well as being placed in the May Hill Stakes and the Fillies' Mile. In the following year she recorded an upset win in the Irish 1000 Guineas before being sent to race in North America where she won the Garden City Stakes. She remained in training as a four-year-old and won stakes races at Belmont Park and Saratoga.
Valentine Waltz was an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old she was initially trained in Ireland where she failed to win in four races although she did finish third in the Marble Hill Stakes. Later in the year she was moved to England and improved, winning a minor race and being placed in both the Rockingham Stakes and the Rockfel Stakes. In the following year she developed into one of the best fillies of her generation in Europe, winning the Nell Gwyn Stakes and the Poule d'Essai des Pouliches as well as finishing third in both the 1000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes. After her retirement from racing she became a broodmare and had modest success as a dam of winners.
