Sunspangled (foaled 10 May 1996) was an Irish thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from July 1998 until September 1999, she won twice and finished second twice in ten starts. As a two-year-old, she won on her debut but was beaten in her next two races before recording her most important victory in the Group One Fillies' Mile at Ascot Racecourse. In the following year, she was campaigned exclusively in Group One events and failed to win, although she did finish second in the Irish Oaks. She has made little impact as a broodmare.

Background

Sunspangled was a chestnut mare with a large white star and a white sock on her left hind foot bred in Ireland by Klaus Rohde & Katom Ltd. Her sire, Caerleon, won the Prix du Jockey Club and the Benson & Hedges Gold Cup in 1983 and went on to become an "excellent" stallion, siring the winners of more than 700 races including Generous, Marienbard, Moonax and Warrsan. [2] Her dam Sunspangled was a high-class racemare whose wins included the Preis der Diana in 1989 [3] and was rated 121 by Timeform. [4] Before foaling Sunspangled she had produced French Ballerina who won two editions of the Saval Beg Stakes and was later successful over hurdles. She was descended from Overture, a British broodmare who was the ancestor of many major winners including Supreme Court, Marwell, Unite and Paean. [5]

In September 1997, the yearling filly was consigned by the Barronstown Stud to the Tattersalls sale, where she was bought for 75,000 guineas by bloodstock agent Dermot "Demi" O'Byrne on behalf of John Magnier's Coolmore organisation. [6] Like many Coolmore horses she was sent into training with Aidan O'Brien at Ballydoyle. The details of her ownership changed from race to race: she was sometimes listed and as the property of Michael Tabor, whilst in other races she raced in the ownership of a partnership between Tabor and Susan Magnier.

Racing career

1998: two-year-old season

On her racecourse debut, Sunspangled was one of eleven fillies to contest a seven-furlong maiden race at Galway Races and started at odds of 13/2. Ridden by Christy Roche, she was settled in seventh place before moving into second place on the final turn. She overtook the Jim Bolger-trained favourite St Clair Ridge in the closing stages and won by a neck with Institutrice half a length away in third. [7] The filly was then moved up in class for the Listed Debutante Stakes at Leopardstown Racecourse on 23 August. Starting the 9/4 second favourite, she took the lead in the straight but was overtaken a furlong out and beaten one and a half lengths by the John Oxx-trained Edabiya. Richard Hughes took over from Roche when Sunspangled stepped up in class again for the Group One Moyglare Stud Stakes at the Curragh two weeks later. She briefly took the lead in the last quarter mile but was outpaced in the closing stages and finished fifth behind Edabiya, Fear And Greed, Crystal Downs, and Wannabe Grand.

For her final race of the year, Sunspangled was sent to England for the Group One Fillies' Mile on soft ground at Ascot Racecourse on 27 September. Edabiya started favourite ahead of the May Hill Stakes winner Calando and the highly regarded maiden winner Alabaq with Sunspangled the 9/1 fourth choice in an eight-runner field which also included the Prestige Stakes runner-up Choirgirl. She was ridden for the first time by Mick Kinane, who partnered her in all her subsequent races. She was restrained by Kinane in the early stages as Choirgirl set the pace, before moving into contention approaching the final turn. Ebadiya took the lead in the straight, but Sunspangled stayed on strongly under pressure to take the lead inside the final furlong and held off a late challenge from Calando to win by a neck with the favourite a short head away in third. The first three finished nine lengths clear of Alabaq in fourth place. [8] Kinane commented, "The plan was to be a bit more patient and she showed she is a good filly who will stay. She should improve physically and she has the temperament to carry her through". [9]

1999: three-year-old season

On her first appearance as a three-year-old, Sunspangled was sent to Newmarket Racecourse for the 186th running of the 1000 Guineas over the Rowley Mile on 2 May. Despite not having a trial race, [10] she started the 7/1 third favourite behind Wince and the French-trained Moiava but was never in serious contention and finished fifteenth of the twenty-two runners. In the Irish 1,000 Guineas three weeks later, she briefly reached third place in the straight before fading into seventh behind Hula Angel. For her next three races, Sunspangled was moved up in distance to compete one and a half miles, with mixed results. In The Oaks on 4 June, she finished sixth behind the Henry Cecil-trained Ramruma (O'Brien felt that she did not cope with the undulating track) [11] but in July she was second to the same filly in the Irish Oaks at the Curragh. [12] She was unable to trouble Ramruma in the Yorkshire Oaks in August and finished tenth of the eleven runners. On her final appearance, Sunspangled was matched against male opposition in the Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown Racecourse. She started a 40/1 outsider and finished last of the seven runners behind Daylami.

Breeding record

Sunspangled was retired from racing to become a broodmare for the Coolmore associate Tower Bloodstock, before being acquired by Sheikh Mohammed's Darley Stud. She produced at least six foals between 2001 and 2011:

Ramruma is a retired Thoroughbred racehorse who was bred in the United States, but trained in the United Kingdom during a racing career which lasted from September 1998 until September 2000. In 1999, Ramruma won five of her six races including three Group One races: The Oaks and the Irish Oaks against other three-year-old fillies and the Yorkshire Oaks in which she also defeated older fillies and mares. Halfway to Heaven is a retired Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and an active broodmare. After winning one minor race as a two-year-old in 2007, she emerged as one of the leading fillies in Europe the following year, recording Group One successes in the Irish 1,000 Guineas, Nassau Stakes and Sun Chariot Stakes. She was retired from racing at the end of the year having won four of her nine races.

Milligram was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare, best known for her win over Miesque and Sonic Lady in the 1987 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. In a racing career which lasted from September 1986 until November 1987 she ran nine times and won four races. Apart from the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, she won the Coronation Stakes and Waterford Crystal Mile, as well as finishing second in the Prix Marcel Boussac, 1000 Guineas and Irish 1,000 Guineas. She was the highest-rated horse in the United Kingdom over one mile in 1987. Milligram was retired at the end of her three-year-old season and had some success as a broodmare.

Exclusive was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a juvenile, she won a strongly-contested race on her debut and the finished third in the Fillies' Mile. As a three-year-old in 1998 she finished third in the classic 1000 Guineas before recording her biggest win in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. After her retirement from racing, she became a very successful broodmare, being the ancestor of major winners including Chic and Integral.

Kissing Cousin was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old she showed progressive form, winning two minor races before finishing second in the May Hill Stakes and third in the Fillies' Mile. In the following year she ran poorly on her seasonal debut but won then won a minor stakes race before ending her racing career with a win in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. She was then retired from racing. She had little success as a broodmare, producing only two minor winners.

Listen is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed her best form as a two-year-old in 2007 she won the Listed Saoire Stakes on her debut, finished second in both the Debutante Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes and then recorded her biggest success in the Group One Fillies' Mile. Her subsequent racing career was compromised by injury and she made little impact in two races as a three-year-old. She has had some success as a broodmare in Japan.

Lailani is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from October 2000 until October 2001 she won seven of her ten races including Group One/ Grade I races in three countries. After showing little ability in two races as a juvenile she made relentless progress as a three-year-old, winning seven consecutive races including the Irish Oaks in Ireland, the Nassau Stakes in England and the Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes in the United States. After her retirement from racing she had some success as a broodmare.

Zahrat Dubai is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After running unplaced in her only race as a juvenile she wintered in Dubai and returned to Britain to record an impressive victory in the Musidora Stakes. She finished third when favourite for The Oaks but then defeated a strong field in the Nassau Stakes. She failed to reproduce her best form in two subsequent races and was retired at the end of the year. Zahrat Dubai became a broodmare and produced two winners from eleven foals.

Trusted Partner was an American-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed great promise as a two-year-old in 1987 when she won both of her races including the C L Weld Park Stakes and won the Irish 1000 Guineas on her three-year-old debut. She was beaten in her three remaining European starts and had no success when sent to race in America in 1989. After her retirement from racing she became a very successful broodmare.

Saoire is a Welsh-bred, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning the Irish 1000 Guineas in 2005. After being sold cheaply as a foal she was eventually sent into training with Frances Crowley in Ireland. In four races as a two-year-old in 2004 she showed very promising form, winning a maiden race and finishing placed in both the Moyglare Stud Stakes and the C L Weld Park Stakes. In the following spring she finished sixth in the 1000 Guineas before recording her biggest victory in the Irish equivalent three weeks later. Her victory made her the first Irish Classic Race winner to be trained by a woman. She was well beaten in three subsequent races and was retired from racing at the end of the year.

Alydaress was an American-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted for a little over six months from April to October 1989 she won three of her six races. After finishing third on her debut she won a maiden race and then defeated top-class fields to take the Ribblesdale Stakes and Irish Oaks. In her two subsequent races she finished second in the Yorkshire Oaks and the Gran Premio del Jockey Club. She was retired from racing at the end of the year and had some success as a broodmare.

Knight's Baroness was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from July 1989 until September 1990 she recorded two wins and four places from seven starts. She showed considerable promise as a two-year-old, winning one race and finishing second in the May Hill Stakes and improved when moved up to middle distances in the following year. She wa placed in both the Lingfield Oaks Trial and The Oaks before recording her biggest win in the Irish Oaks. After her retirement from racing she became a broodmare and produced several winners including the Cumberland Lodge Stakes winner Riyadian and the Totesport Trophy winner Essex. Her last recorded foal was born in 2006.

Dance Design is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She competed in five different countries and won seven times from nineteen starts in a track career which lasted from August 1995 to November 1998.

Rebelline was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She won six of her eleven races in a racing career which lasted from October 2000 until May 2002. As a juvenile she won on her debut and then finished second to Vinnie Roe in the Eyrefield Stakes. In the following year she won the Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial and the Pretty Polly Stakes as well as finishing third in the Prix de l'Opéra. She reached her peak as a four-year-old in 2002 when she was undefeated in three starts, taking the Gladness Stakes, Mooresbridge Stakes and Tattersalls Gold Cup. After her retirement from racing she had considerable success as a dam of winners.

Sequoyah is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a juvenile in 2000 she showed high-class form, winning the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes and being placed in both the Railway Stakes and the Debutante Stakes. In the following year she failed to win but ran well against top quality competition to finish fourth in the Irish 1000 Guineas and the Irish Oaks. After her retirement from racing she became a successful broodmare, most notably producing Henrythenavigator.

Necklace is a British, Irish-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She had her greatest success as a two-year-old in 2003 when she won two of her four races including the Debutante Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes. In the following year failed to win but did finish third in the Beverly D. Stakes and fourth in the Epsom Oaks before being retired from racing with a record of two wins from nine starts in four different counties. She had very little success as a broodmare, producing only one minor winner.

Quarter Moon was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. As a two-year-old in 2001 she showed considerable promise, taking the Group 1 Moyglare Stud Stakes on the second of her two starts. In the following year she failed to win but showed top class form to finish second in four Group 1 races: the Irish 1,000 Guineas, the Epsom Oaks, the Irish Oaks and the Nassau Stakes. After retiring from racing at the end of the year she became a successful broodmare whose foals have included the Pretty Polly Stakes winner Diamondsandrubies.

Preseli is an Irish-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She was one of the best two-year-olds in Ireland in 1999 when she was undefeated in three races including the Debutante Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes. In the following spring she took her winning streak to four when she won the Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial but was beaten in her next three races that year, producing her best subsequent effort when narrowly beaten in the Pretty Polly Stakes. In 2001 she raced in North America, but failed to reproduce her European form. As a broodmare she has produced several minor winners.
