Geometer moth Family of insects

The geometer moths are moths belonging to the family Geometridae of the insect order Lepidoptera, the moths and butterflies. Their scientific name derives from the Ancient Greek geo γεω, and metron μέτρον "measure" in reference to the way their larvae, or "inchworms", appear to "measure the earth" as they move along in a looping fashion. A very large family, it has around 23,000 species of moths described, and over 1400 species from six subfamilies indigenous to North America alone. A well-known member is the peppered moth, Biston betularia, which has been subject of numerous studies in population genetics. Several other geometer moths are notorious pests.

Cidariini Tribe of moths

The Cidariini are the largest tribe of geometer moths in the subfamily Larentiinae. The Cidariini include many of the species known as "carpets" or, ambiguously, "carpet moths", and are among the few geometer moths that have been subject to fairly comprehensive cladistic study of their phylogeny. The tribe was described by Philogène Auguste Joseph Duponchel in 1845.

Alsophila (moth) Genus of geometer moths

Alsophila is a genus of the moth family Geometridae, subfamily Alsophilinae. The genus was erected by Jacob Hübner in 1825. The genus is notable because of distinct sexual dimorphism leading to strongly reduced wings in females, so much so that they cannot fly. The moths fly in late autumn or early spring.

Asthena is a genus of moths in the family Geometridae.

Erateina Genus of moths

Erateina is a genus of moths in the family Geometridae erected by Edward Doubleday in 1848.

Lythria Genus of moths

Lythria is a genus of moths in the family Geometridae erected by Jacob Hübner in 1823. It is the only genus of the monotypic tribe Lythriini described by Claude Herbulot in 1962.

Prorella is a genus of moths in the family Geometridae erected by William Barnes and James Halliday McDunnough in 1918.

Larentiini is a tribe of geometer moths under subfamily Larentiinae. The tribe was first described by Philogène Auguste Joseph Duponchel in 1845.

Eupitheciini Tribe of moths

Eupitheciini is a tribe of geometer moths under subfamily Larentiinae, often referred to as pugs. The tribe was described by Tutt in 1896.

Triscaedecia Genus of moths

Triscaedecia is a genus of moths in the family Alucitidae, found in the Malay and Polynesian regions. Triscaedecia is distinguished from all other genera in the family by the hindwings being split into seven, instead of six, lobes. The lobes in both wings are only split to about two-thirds of the length of the wings. The genus was erected by George Hampson in 1905.

Triscaedecia dactyloptera Species of moth

Triscaedecia dactyloptera is a moth of the family Alucitidae, described by George Hampson in 1905. It is larger than the other described species in the genus Triscaedecia and has only been recorded from Sri Lanka.

Triscaedecia septemdactyla Species of moth

Triscaedecia septemdactyla is a moth of the family Alucitidae. It was described by Pagenstecher in 1900 as Hofmannia septemdactyla. It is found in Papua and Papua New Guinea.

Mesothyatira is a monotypic moth genus in the family Drepanidae described by Werny in 1966. Its only species, Mesothyatira simplificata, was described by Constant Vincent Houlbert in 1921. It is found in the Chinese provinces of Shaanxi, Sichuan and Yunnan.

Triscaedecia suva Species of moth

Triscaedecia suva is a moth of the family Alucitidae. It was described by Petr Ustjuzhanin, Vasiliy Kovtunovich and Donald Hobern in 2019. It is found in Fiji.
