Vanessa Lubach is a British artist noted for her unusually intricate and many-layered prints using linseed oil inks, as well as for her paintings and her book illustrations. She lives and works in Norfolk. [1] [2]

Training

Lubach grew up in rural Oxfordshire but graduated from the Brighton School of Art in 1990 with a BA (Hons) in graphic design and illustration. [1]

Technique

Lubach starts her wood block and linocut prints with a sketch based on careful observation. She then draws and carves the intricate main image onto the first ‘key’ block. She prints from this and then transfers the design to additional blocks, as many as there are individual colours in her composition. Some multi-layered designs contain twenty or more colours and may take up to a year to complete. [3] Lubach uses a spoon as a burnisher. The linocuts are then printed using a Harry F Rochat Albion Press [4] in her studio in Norwich. [5] [6]

Content

In her painting and print making, Lubach often depicts quiet moments of domestic life which can include her cats, flowers from her garden, birds and also local wildlife and nature. [7]

Selected work

Helen with Geraniums is a lino print depicting a fluffy, ginger tabby cat with amber eyes, sitting on a windowsill, surrounded by pots of geraniums. [8]

Rosie and Pumpkin is an oil painting on canvas. Lubach says her aim was “to convey the moment of quiet astonishment that followed the battle of wits necessary to catch the agile and evasive bantam.” [1]

Lubach’s paintings and linocuts can be seen at print fairs, [9] [10] [11] exhibitions in art galleries, [12] [13] [6] [14] group exhibitions in Norwich, and on the web site of The Society of Wood Engravers. [15] In 2022, two of Lubach’s works were included in the traveling 84th Annual Exhibition of the Society of Wood Engravers, which was on view at the Sea Pictures Gallery in Suffolk. Books

Lubach has illustrated editions of many classic novels including Frankenstein, Jane Eyre, Dracula and Wuthering Heights . [18] She has also illustrated books about the natural world. [19] [20] Lubach illustrated the cover of Fiona Mozley's debut novel Elmet which was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2017. [21]

Awards

In 2012, her oil painting on canvas, Rosie and Pumpkin, was a showcase portrait at the BP Portrait Awards held at the National Portrait Gallery in London, England. [1] It was the main publicity image for the award that year. [21]

Private life

Lubach lives with her husband Peter Lubach, a ceramicist, printmaker and illustrator, their three children and the animals which often appear as subjects in the work of both artists. [22] [5] [23] [24] Vanessa Lubach's portrait has been painted by Paul P Smith. [25]

The Grosvenor School of Modern Art was a private British art school and, in its shortened form, the name of a brief British-Australian art movement. From 1925 to 1930 Claude Flight ran it with him, and also taught linocutting there; among his students were Sybil Andrews, Cyril Power, Lill Tschudi and William Greengrass.

Gertrude Anna Bertha Hermes was a British wood-engraver and sculptor. Hermes was a member of the English Wood Engraving Society (1925–31) and exhibited with the Society of Wood Engravers, the Royal Academy and The London Group during the 1930s.

The Norwich Twenty Group (N20G) is a group of artists in Norfolk, England. Stimulated by contemporary art movements, the original group of 14 artists, met in November 1944, they intended to raise standards of local professional art to something worthy of the artistic history of Norfolk, by mutual criticism and appraisal of work. On 8 January 1945, they named the group the Norwich Twenty Group and a constitution was signed. N20G continues to flourish with new members. Since 1944, over 270 artists have been members. Some of the artists have included Bernard Reynolds, Edward Barker, Leslie Davenport, Michael Andrews, Mary Newcomb, Hamilton Wood, Jeffery Camp and Cavendish Morton. Since 1945 and until the end of 2013, some 150 art shows have been organised. Shows have taken place in 97 venues in Norwich, 35 in East Anglia, 11 outside East Anglia and 7 in Europe. Many of the artists trained at the Norwich School of Art and Design, now Norwich University of the Arts, Royal College of Art, Slade School of Fine Art, and other well known art schools. Many have travelled widely, studying the arts of other cultures and have exhibited regionally, nationally and internationally. Current members include 88 artists, with three life members and four honorary members. Several NUA graduates are invited to join the group every year, for one year, under the licentiate scheme. Meeting challenges in today's contemporary art, N20G now encompasses artists working in all media from paint, sculpture, installations and digital, ever seeking to nurture new members and forms of art.

Joseph Clover was an English portrait painter and a member of the Norwich School of painters. He was born in Aylsham, in the English county of Norfolk, one of the twelve children of Thomas and Ann Clover, who owned a drapery business in the town. Few details of his early years are known. He was engaged to be married, but his fiancée, a local girl, died in 1801. He started his career as an engraver but was advised to give it up. Inspired to turn to portrait painting when the artist John Opie painted one of his relatives, he became Opie's pupil, and studied under him for four years. His paintings often use a generous amount of paint, handled freely in a fashion that was characteristic of Opie.

Edith Mary Lawrence was a British artist known for her landscape and portrait paintings, her colour linocuts and her textile designs.

Julia Mary Mavrogordato was an English print-maker and painter.
