Vary Lumar is an alternative rock band based out of Boston, Massachusetts, formed in 2004.
While attending Berklee College of Music, Paul DePasquale, Robert Laff, and Rob Fusco formed the core of Vary Lumar. After playing with a few different lead guitarists, Ben Case settled into the role as the band recorded their debut EP, The Cold Heart Bru Hah Hah.
After a lengthy recording process with producer Sean McLaughlin, Vary Lumar released their first full-length album Waiting Room. The album was declared Album of the Month by Performer Magazine, and the band went on an East Coast tour. Fusco briefly left the band as they recorded follow-up EP Plasticolor Coma, and rejoined as they began work on their second full-length again with McLaughlin producing. Singer Paul DePasquale was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma during the process, [1] which informed the content of 2011's The Jig is Up. Like its predecessors, The Jig is Up received coverage from notable Boston publications such as DigBoston, The Boston Phoenix, and The Noise. In addition to the local acclaim, Vary Lumar's music was appearing in commercials and promotions for Anthropologie, [2] W Magazine featuring January Jones, [3] and Bassike. [4]
After a series of promotional concerts behind The Jig is Up, Case left the band to pursue other interests. The band continued as a trio, recording two singles and ultimately released an EP entitled Capture in 2013. Capture received year-end accolades from Vanyaland [5] and the music video for lead single "Hold it Against Me" was debuted by The LFB. [6] Christopher G. Brown joined the band as a permanent fourth member on guitar and synthesizers, and the now-four piece quickly recorded and released a trio of new singles.
2014 saw Vary Lumar participating in 2014's WBCN Rock & Roll Rumble at T.T. the Bear's Place in Cambridge, MA [1] and launching a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund the release of their next full-length on vinyl. The resulting album, Breaker, was released in December and received considerable amounts of press. [7] [8] [9] The band spent 2015 promoting Breaker with live shows and working on new music for its follow-up.
Skyclad are a British heavy metal band with heavy folk influences in their music. They are considered one of the pioneers of folk metal. The etymology behind the term "skyclad" comes from a pagan/wiccan term for ritual nudity, in which rituals are performed with the participants metaphorically clad only by the sky, as a sign of equality. The name alludes both to the band's religious leanings and to their social beliefs, as set out in the song "Skyclad" on their first album.
Blonde Redhead is an American alternative rock band composed of Kazu Makino and twin brothers Simone and Amedeo Pace that formed in New York City in 1993. The band's earliest albums were noted for their noise rock influences, though their sound evolved by the early 2000s with the releases of Misery is a Butterfly (2004) and 23 (2007), which both incorporated elements of dream pop, shoegaze and other genres. They have released ten studio albums and have toured internationally.
Freezepop is an American electronic band from Boston, Massachusetts, United States, formed in 1999 by Liz Enthusiasm, Sean T. Drinkwater, and The Duke of Pannekoeken. Since December 2009, the current lineup includes Enthusiasm, Drinkwater, Robert John "Bananas" Foster, and Christmas Disco-Marie Sagan. The band is named after the frozen snack, and they have described their music as "sweet and cold and fruity and plastic-y".
Belly is an alternative rock band formed in Rhode Island in 1991 by Tanya Donelly. The original lineup consisted of Donelly on vocals and guitar, Fred Abong on bass, and brothers Tom and Chris Gorman on guitar and drums respectively. The band released two albums during the early 1990s alternative rock boom before breaking up in 1995. They reunited in 2016 and mounted limited tours in the United States and United Kingdom that year.
Big D and the Kids Table is a ska punk band formed in October 1995 in Boston, Massachusetts, when its members converged in college. Their first release was on their own Fork in Hand Records label, but have since teamed with Springman Records and SideOneDummy. The band has been noted for its strict DIY work ethic, such as engineering, producing, and releasing their own albums and videos and self-promotion of their own shows.
State Radio is a Boston-based rock trio comprising singer and primary songwriter Chad Stokes Urmston, bassist Chuck Fay, and, formerly, drummer Michael Najarian. The band's songs focus on social and political issues and have been musically described as a combination of reggae, punk and rock.
Hurricane #1 are an English rock band, formed in Oxford in 1996. The band were formed by former Ride guitarist Andy Bell, along with vocalist / guitarist Alex Lowe, bassist Will Pepper and drummer Gareth "Gaz" Farmer. After releasing two albums, Hurricane #1 (1997) and Only the Strongest Will Survive (1999), the band broke up. Bell went on to join Gay Dad and then eventually Oasis, while Lowe ventured into a solo career. Fronted by Lowe, the band reformed in 2014 and released their third album, Find What You Love and Let It Kill You, in November 2015.
