Vernon is an unincorporated community in Van Buren County, in the U.S. state of Iowa. [1]
The community is across the Des Moines River from Bentonsport. [2] The community is in sections 1 and 2 of Henry Township, south of the Des Moines River. [3]
Van Buren was platted on June 12, 1837, by Henry Smith, John Smith, S.C. Reed, and Isaac Reed. The community was originally known as South Bentonsport, as it lay on the south side of the Des Moines River, across from Bentonsport. [4] According to The Annals of Iowa, Vernon was probably named in honor of Mount Vernon, the home of George Washington. [3]
During the early years, a ferry provided connection between Vernon and Bentonsport over the Des Moines. [4]
A grist mill was built in Vernon in 1845. This mill was later used as a wool mill and then a flour mill. A pottery opened in Vernon in 1848. The Methodist Episcopal Church of Vernon opened in 1856. [4]
The Vernon post office opened in 1853. [5] By the 1870s, a hotel and blacksmith shop were also located in Vernon. [4] Vernon School District #5 was formed. [3]
The population of Vernon was 386 in 1902. [6] The Vernon post office closed in 1903. [5]
Vernon's population was 78 in 1925. [7]

Iowa Highway 1 (Iowa 1) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Iowa that extends from Keosauqua to Anamosa. It travels nearly 120 miles (190 km), mainly through rich farmland and small communities. Iowa 1 provides an important link to Iowa City and the University of Iowa as it passes through campus. Portions of the route today date back to the late 1830s, when Martin Van Buren was president, making Iowa 1 one of the oldest routes in the state, pre-dating the current primary highway system by nearly eighty years. The highway was seriously damaged by the Cedar River in the Iowa flood of 2008, which closed the highway for seven weeks.

The Great Flood of 1851 occurred after record-setting rainfalls across the Midwestern United States and Plains from May to August, 1851. Hardest hit was the State of Iowa, with significant flooding extending to the Lower Mississippi River basin. Historical evidence suggest flooding occurred in the eastern Plains, from Nebraska to the Red River basin, but these areas were sparsely settled in 1851. Heavy rainfall also occurred in the Ohio River basin.
Iowaville was a small town on the lowland near the northeast bank of the Des Moines River, near the line between Davis and Van Buren counties, and between present-day Eldon and Selma, Iowa, United States. It was established about 1838 near the site of earlier trading posts. Iowaville is now farm land with almost nothing to show the town location, but it is an important Iowa archaeological site.
Bentonsport, a village on the Des Moines River near Keosauqua, in Van Buren County, Iowa, was recognized in 1972 for being very little changed since its historic heyday as a thriving steamboat port in the mid-1800s. A 35-acre (14 ha) historic district covering 16 original blocks in the historic center of the village was then approved for listing on the National Register of Historic Places. The district also included waterfront property and the village's historic wagon bridge across the river to the village of Vernon.
