Vilamoura Old Course is a golf course in Vilamoura, on the Algarve in Southern Portugal. Sometimes referred to as the "Grande Dame" of the Algarve, [1] it is owned and operated by Dom Pedro Hotels & Golf Collection, who purchased the course, along with four others in Vilamoura, in 2016. [2] The five courses had previously been owned by the Oceanico Group since 2007. [1]

Contents

Designed by Frank Pennink, the Old Course opened in 1969, and hosted the Portuguese Open in 1976. Following remodelling by Martin Hawtree, the course reopened in 1997. [1]

Vilamoura

The 2000 IAAF World Cross Country Championships took place on March 18/19, 2000. The races were held at the Sporting Complex in Vilamoura, Portugal. Reports of the event were given in The New York Times, in the Herald, and for the IAAF.

Portugal Masters

The Portugal Masters is a European Tour men's professional golf tournament which was played for the first time in October 2007. The prize fund was €3 million, making it the richest golf tournament in the country, and comfortably in the top half of European Tour events. It was jointly staged by the European Tour and the Portuguese Tourist Board (ITP) under an initial three-year agreement. Since 2013 the prize fund has been €2 million. The host course is the Arnold Palmer designed Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course in Vilamoura.

Almond Blossom Cross Country

The Almond Blossom Cross Country is an annual international cross country running competition which takes place in Albufeira, Portugal, in early March. It is one of the IAAF permit meetings which serve as qualifying events for the IAAF World Cross Country Championships. It is held in co-operation with the Associação de Atletismo do Algarve. The race gets its name from the white blossom which appears on the almond trees native to the Algarve region during the spring.

The 2005 WGC-World Cup took place 17–20 November at the Oceânico Golf on its Victoria Course in Vilamoura, Algarve, Portugal. It was the 51st World Cup and the sixth as a World Golf Championship event.

Albufeira Municipality in Algarve, Portugal

Albufeira is a city and seat of its own municipality in the district of Faro, in the southernmost Portuguese region of Algarve. The municipality population in 2011 was 40,828, in an area of 140.66 square kilometres. The city proper had a population of 13,646 in 2001. Algarve Open

The Algarve Open was a men's professional golf tournament played from 1969 to 1972 in the Algarve in Southern Portugal. The 1969 and 1972 events were held at Penina Golf, Portimão. In 1970 it was held at Vilamoura while in 1971 it was held at Vale do Lobo. Total prize money was £5,500 in 1969, £7,000 in 1971 and £6,000 in 1972.

Dom Pedro Hotels & Golf Collection is a Portugal-based, international brand of hotels and resorts in Portugal and Brazil. Formerly known as Dom Pedro Hotels Group, the brand was renamed following the acquisition of the five golf courses in Vilamoura, Algarve, Portugal.

1976 Espirito Santo Trophy Golf tournament

The 1976 Espirito Santo Trophy took place 6–9 October at Vilamoura Golf Club in, Vilamoura, Algarve, Portugal. It was the seventh women's golf World Amateur Team Championship for the Espirito Santo Trophy. The tournament was a 72-hole stroke play team event with 25 teams, each with up to three players. The best two scores for each round counted towards the team total.

2011 European Amateur Team Championship Golf competition

The 2011 European Amateur Team Championship took place 5 – 9 July at Oceânico Golf in Vilamoura, Algarve, Portugal on its Victoria Course. It was the 29th men's golf European Amateur Team Championship.
