Villa Football Club. [1] is an Irish association football club in Waterford, Ireland.

History

Villa FC was founded in 1953 [2] [3] in Waterford City, Ireland. It has achieved a number of footballing successes [4] in Waterford since its founding. Villa FC's Premier team plays in the Waterford & District Junior League, and has won the competition [5] twice. [6] [7] Villa FC also won the FAI Junior Cup in 2022, [8] winning 1:0 in the final, as well as a number of other honours [4] at levels from schoolboy to senior. Villa FC operates from their home ground at Connor's Park in Poleberry, Waterford City. A number of former Villa FC players have gone on to success in football leagues outside Ireland, including Kenny McEvoy (Tottenham Hotspur), Lee O'Connor (Manchester United), Jayson Molumby (Brighton), and Timi Sobowale (Manchester City). FAI Junior Cup Win, 2022

In 2022 Villa won the FAI Junior Cup, defeating Pike Rovers from Limerick at Turners Cross in Cork with the winning goal scored by Conor Kilgannon. Speaking of the win after the match, Villa manager Conor Coad noted that it was "a historic day for us and it's been a massive season for us, we've never won our own local Premier League and to go and do that recently and back it up with this win is something we could have only dreamed of at the start of the year". The cup winning team on the day were: Craig Dunphy, James Kennedy (Sean O'Keefe, 90+1), Conor Signorelli (Eoghan Rea, 75), Dylan Walsh, Adam Heaslip (C), Luke Walsh (Mark Walsh, 72), Conor Kilgannon, Aaron O'Connor, Dean Walsh, Cian Browne, John Frederick Tamen (Adam Conway, 67), and the panel during the campaign and on final day also included Ravelli Kilonda, Niall McCabe, Ivan Homoki, Jeff Da Silva, Daniel Pender, Scott Searson, Bobby Drohan, Matas Grinius, Hugh Munro, Shane O'Brien, Ross Cashin, Conor Fennell and Callum McFadden. The management of the cup winning team were: Manager - Conor Coad, Assistant Manager - Paddy Byrne, Coaches - Devan Morrissey, Paul Morrissey, Physio - John Butler. [11]

Waterford Football Club formerly Waterford United Football Club is an Irish association football club based in Waterford who play in the League of Ireland Premier Division. The club was founded and elected to the league in 1930. Originally the club was based at the greyhound stadium known as Kilcohan Park, but moved to the Waterford Regional Sports Centre in the 1993–94 season. Albert Rovers F.C. were an Irish association football club based in Cork. Between 1976–77 and 1981–82 the club played in the League of Ireland. During this time the club also played under the names Cork Albert, Cork Alberts and Cork United. The club has also fielded teams in the Munster Senior League and the Cork Athletic Union League. Throughout their history, the club colours were red and black and occasionally white. They were used in various combinations, including stripes and hoops.

Wexford Football Club is an Irish association football club based in Crossabeg, County Wexford. They compete in the League of Ireland First Division. The club joined the league after being awarded a First Division licence for the 2007 League of Ireland season. The opportunity to join the League of Ireland arose as Dublin City became bankrupt before the end of the 2006 season, leaving an uneven number of clubs. The 2007 season coincided with the takeover of the running of the league by the FAI and all existing clubs had to apply for entry into what was effectively a new league. Limerick was the only existing club refused a licence and so Wexford Youths and Limerick 37 were admitted to the new league. The club previously wore pink and black, before switching to a purple and gold combination in 2024. The club rebranded for the start of the 2017 season by dropping the 'Youths' from their title and changing the club crest.

Alan Kirby is an Irish former footballer. He played as a midfielder, most often on the right wing.

Paddy Coad was an Irish football player and manager. He played as a forward for Waterford, Glenavon, Shamrock Rovers and Ireland. Although known, primarily, as a maker of goals, Coad scored 126 goals in the League of Ireland and a further 41 in the FAI Cup. In 1946–47, he was top goalscorer in the League of Ireland. As a player manager, he also guided Shamrock Rovers to three League of Ireland titles and two FAI Cups, before he returned to Waterford and guided them to their first league title in 1966. He was appointed manager of Limerick in September 1967.

Alfred Hale is an Irish former football player and coach who played for several clubs in both the League of Ireland and the English League, most notably, Waterford, Aston Villa, Doncaster Rovers and Cork Celtic. During his career, Hale scored 153 goals in the League of Ireland and a further 66 with English League clubs. As an international, Hale also played for the Republic of Ireland.

David Joseph Walsh, commonly referred to as Davy Walsh or Dave Walsh, was an Irish footballer who played as a centre forward for, among others, Linfield, West Bromwich Albion and Aston Villa. Walsh was a dual international and played for both Ireland teams – the FAI XI and the IFA XI. In 1949, he was a member of the FAI XI that defeated England 2–0 at Goodison Park, becoming the first team to beat England at home.

The Munster Senior League is an association football league organised by the Munster Football Association. It organises seven divisions as well as various cup competitions. Its Senior Division is a third level division in the Republic of Ireland football league system. Munster Senior League teams also compete in the Munster Senior Cup, the FAI Cup, the FAI Intermediate Cup and the FAI Junior Cup. In recent seasons the winners of the Senior Division have qualified to play in the League of Ireland Cup. Despite using the Munster name in its title, the vast majority of its member clubs are based in County Cork. Pike Rovers F.C. is an Irish association football club based in Southill, Limerick. The club plays at Crossagalla and their senior men's team competes in the Limerick & District League. They have previously played in the Munster Senior League. During their history Pike Rovers have also entered teams in the FAI Cup, the FAI Intermediate Cup, the FAI Junior Cup and the FAI Youth Cup. They have been finalists in the latter three cup competitions.

Galway United Football Club is an Irish association football club based in Galway. They play in the League of Ireland Premier Division following promotion from the First Division in 2023. They were founded as Galway Rovers F.C. during the 1930s. They made their League of Ireland debut in 1977–78 and changed their name to Galway United in 1981–82. After suffering financial difficulties, the club dropped out of the League of Ireland after the 2011 season but in 2014 Galway United returned initially playing as Galway F.C. for a season. Like other sports teams from the county, Galway United are nicknamed "The Tribesmen", after the 14 "tribes" of Galway, the merchant families that established the city.

Shamrock Rovers were the defending champions, having won their sixth league title the previous season. Shamrock Rovers went on to retain the title.

The 2022 FAI Cup is the 102nd edition of the Republic of Ireland's primary national cup competition. This edition features teams from the League of Ireland Premier Division and the First Division, as well as non-league teams. The competition began with qualifying on the week ending 22 April 2022.

The 2023 League of Ireland Premier Division, known as the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division for sponsorship reasons, was the 39th season of the League of Ireland Premier Division, the top Irish league for association football clubs since its establishment in 1985.

The 2024 FAI Cup, known as the Sports Direct FAI Cup for sponsorship reasons, is the 104th edition of the Republic of Ireland's primary national cup competition. It features teams from the League of Ireland Premier Division and the First Division, as well as teams from the regional leagues of the Republic of Ireland football league system.
