William Duncan Livingstone Hardie or W. D. L. Hardie (August 9,1863 –August 17,1942) was a Canadian politician. He was the 13th mayor of Lethbridge,Alberta,serving from 1912 to 1928. The former hamlet of Hardieville,annexed by the City of Lethbridge in 1978, [1] was named after him.
William Duncan Livingstone Hardie was born on August 9,1863,in Bathgate,Scotland to William and Agnes (née Livingston) Hardie. [2] [3] His family immigrated to Youngstown,Ohio,in 1863;although,he returned to Scotland to attend Glasgow University. After graduating in 1883 with a degree in civil and mining engineering,he moved to Pennsylvania where he married Margaret Jane Kirkley two years later.
He was hired by the Alberta Railway &Coal Company in 1889 to work as an assistant to mines superintendent William Stafford. He resigned two years later,worked for two years in Mexico and then worked for the Scranton [Pennsylvania] School of Mines. He returned to Lethbridge in 1894 to work as mines superintendent with North Western Coal and Navigation Company. After 16 years,he quit NWCNC to work for the Diamond Coal Company at nearby Diamond City.
In 1912,Hardie quit the Diamond Coal Company to run as mayor,defeating two other candidates. He took office on January 1,1913. Two years later,a commission form of civic government was instituted,and he became both mayor and commissioner of finance. When the government became a managerial form in 1928 after great support from the electorate,Hardie's term as mayor ended. He worked as assistant superintendent of the Dominion Government Terminal Elevator until he retired. He died in 1942. [4]

However it was responsible for pensions and medical benefits for 40,000 retired miners,and for 50,000 spouses and dependents.

Montague Aldous was a Dominion Topographical Surveyor from Charlottetown,Prince Edward Island. He was a participant in foundation surveys of the Northwest Territories. He was associated with A.L. Russell in 1877 in a survey west to the third meridian. Taken on Special Survey in 1879,he surveyed the fourth meridian to a point north of Lloydminster,Alberta/Saskatchewan,then ran in the 14th base line west to Stony Plain where it intersected the 5th meridian. His assistant,Charles Alexander Magrath,was later the first mayor of Lethbridge,Northwest Territories. In 1880 Aldous surveyed the fifth meridian south to Waterton Lakes. He spent the rest of the summer in southern Alberta's Porcupine Hills,then being taken up for ranching.
Alberta Provincial Highway No. 4,commonly referred to as Highway 4,is a 103-kilometre (64 mi) highway in southern Alberta,Canada that connects Highway 3 in Lethbridge to Interstate 15 in Montana. The highway was designated in 1999 as the First Special Service Force Memorial Highway in honour of elite soldiers who travelled to Helena,Montana for training before World War II. The highway continues into the United States retaining that name.

As part of his vision for Canada,Galt was committed to finding industries that would bring settlers to the District of Alberta of the Northwest Territories. The company was founded to create a coal mining industry that could bring settlers to the Northwest Territories. It was based in Lethbridge,Alberta,with his son Elliott Torrance Galt,managing day-to-day operations. The company's superintendent was William Stafford. Money for this company came from a consortium of investors from Canada,England,and the United States.
Robert Smillie was a Scottish trade unionist and Labour Party politician. He was a leader of the coal miners,and played a central role in moving support from the miners away from the Liberal Party to the Labour Party. He had a firm commitment to socialism as an ideal,and militancy as a tactic.

Coal in Alberta is found in the Coalspur Formation in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin in the foothills of southwestern Alberta. The Coalspur Formation,which has large quantities of high-quality coal,runs from south of the Wapiti River to the North Saskatchewan River. The Coalspur coal zone is about 120 metres (390 ft) to 200 metres (660 ft) thick.
Benjamin Franklin Morris II was an American coal miner,labor leader,activist,and mayor. From 1906 until 1913,Morris represented coal miners across the United States,and was the principal representative for miners in Paint Creek during the West Virginia coal wars. Morris was secretary of the United Mine Workers of America and on the UMWA's International Executive Board. During his time at UMWA he worked alongside labor rights activists Mother Jones,John Phillip White,John Mitchell,and Thomas Lewis. Morris was appointed in 1911 by West Virginia Governor William E. Glasscock to be a delegate to the American Mining Congress;served as a delegate to the West Virginia Democratic State Convention in 1932–33;and,served 22 years as mayor of the town of Marmet,West Virginia.
