The Waja people are one of the ethnic groups in Gombe area of Nigeria that were the early inhabitants of the region. They inhabited the east-southern corner of Gombe state, occupying the present Balanga local government area of the state. [1] [2] The Waja people are the occupants of the Waja district which spread over an area of 330 square miles (850 km2). [3]

History

Waja are believed to have come from the Shani area, under their leader Bala Amnasha.  However, the  conflicts with the Kanuri necessitated the movement of Waja into Gombe area.  After that, they dispersed to the various locations they presently occupied, such as Dala-Waja, Tallese, Dong, Reme, Gelengu, Bangu and other hamlets. [2]

An alternative theory promoted by C. D. Bala is that the Waja migrated from Yemen, crossing the Red Sea, passing through Egypt and Sudan to Ngazargamu and later to Kukawa in Borno, where they had a long stay. They later moved on from Kukawa and settled at Shani. At Shani, there was a power tussle between the Derwo and the Wiyya on the position of the leader. The Derwo then moved out of Shani and settled at Degri, and the Wiyya moved to Dala hill. This division created the plain and the hill Haja. [4]

Types of Waja

Waja people are of two types: the hill Waja and the plane Waja, because of their settlements. The hill Waja moved to the hill because of the Fulani Jihadists. [2]

The cousin tribes

The two tribes Lugunda and Waja are linked together by a road. The Lugunda are majorly located at the Guyuk local government area of Adamawa state and Waja people are predominant in the Balanga local government area of Gombe state although both can claim citizenship of both states. The two tribes are commonly referred to as cousins as they have similar culture and the relationship is boosted by intermarriage. [5] [6]

Socioeconomic and political system

The socio-economic and political organisation of the Waja people was tied to their village lineages. Their belief system is around the Jukun tsafi Kuru, believe in the Supreme Being, that controlled every aspect of the Waja life. The existence of Waja chief priest is to mediate between the people and the various gods and the Kuru. [2]

Language

Waja are speakers of Adamawa-ubangy of Kwa family of languages. [7] The language is very close to Tera and Bolewa. They also observed a number of rituals and practices similar to that of the Tera and Bolewa people. [2]

The Waja people have eight discrete languages most of which are noun class languages. Three of them (Dadiya, Maa, and Yebu) have almost completely lost their noun class morphology. [8]

Leadership positions

Alhaji Mohammed Danjuma is the fifth Bala waja of Talase after the death of his father who ruled for 43 years. [9]

The first female chief of Waja is Finney David, who obtained the title 'Jakadyar Waja' due to her contribution to the state. [10] [11]

Occupation

The Waja are agriculturists and industrialists who engaged in pottery and blacksmithing. [12] They engaged in peasant farming in the colonial era, mostly farming groundnuts and cotton which led to the early establishment of a market in the area by the colonial rulers. [13]

The Tula–Waja, or Tula–Wiyaa languages are a branch of the provisional Savanna languages, closest to Kam (Nyingwom), spoken in northeastern Nigeria. They are spoken primarily in southeastern Gombe State and other neighbouring states.

Balanga is one of the eleven Local governments in Gombe State, Nigeria. It falls under the southern senatorial district of the state. Its administrative headquarters is located at Talasse town. Dukku is a Local Government Area in Gombe State, Nigeria. Its headquarters are in Dukku town. The Gongola River flows through the west and north of the LGA. It has an area of 3,815 km2 and a population of 207,190 from the 2006 census. The vast majority of the population are Muslims, but there is a Christian minority. The major ethnic group is Fulani with Fulfulde being spoken as a major language alongside Bole while Hausa, Kanuri, and Kare-Kare are also spoken.

Dadiya is one of the Savanna languages of northeastern Nigeria. They are found in Gombe, Adamawa & Taraba state. The Dadiya people of Gombe State are found in Balanga local government, while those in Adamawa and Taraba are found spread in Lamurde and Karim-Lamido Local government area respectively.

Yebu is one of the Savanna languages of Kaltungo LGA in Gombe State, northeastern Nigeria.

The Tula Kingdom is a Nigerian traditional state in northern Nigeria with its headquarters in Wange, Kaltungo, Local Government Area Gombe. It comprises three districts: Yiri, Baule and Wange, and is located 101 kilometres away from the Gombe State capital and 15 kilometres off the Adamawa-Yola highway. The Present Mai or King Dr Abubakar Buba Atare II is the paramount Ruler and Chairman Tula Chiefdom.

The 2023 Gombe State gubernatorial election will take place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Gombe State, concurrent with elections to the Gombe State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—will be held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya is running for a second term and was renominated by his party.

The Tangale people are one of the ethnic groups in Northern Nigeria, situated in Gombe State. The Tangale people that majorly speak Tangale got their name from “Tangal”, a chief of Billiri, in the present day Gombe state of Nigeria. It is believed that Tangal was instrumental in organizing the clans under his leadership and because of this, the people under him were referred to as the Tangale.

The Bolewa people are an ethnic group located in the northern part of Gombe State. According to Bolewa tradition, their ancestors originated in Yemen. They migrated together with the invaders and originators of the kingdoms of Kanem and Songhai.The Bolewa speakers were found all over the banks of the Gongola River, occupying various communities in the west and north-west areas of Borno, such as Kalam, Fali, Daniski, Kafarati, Mbara and Bauchi.

Gombe-Abba was established by Modibbo Buba yero, the student of Usman Dan Fodiyo, after the 1804 Jihad war. It is located about a kilometre off the Gombe - Kano highway, near a river and on a hilly area. Gombe Abba is the first capital of Gombe Emirate and inextricable part of Gombe history.

The Tera people are an ethnic group that make up the early inhabitants of the Gombe area prior to the 18th century. Presently, Tera people are mostly found in the east of the present day Gombe emirate.

Imam Abdullahi Abubakar is an Islamic cleric and humanitarian. He is best known for saving the lives of 262 non-Muslim during an attack on his community by bandits.
