Waseca Junior and Senior High School (WJSH) is located in Waseca, Minnesota, United States. [2] The school mascot is the bluejay and the school colors are blue and gold. It houses approximately 1,000 students in grades 7 through 12. They offer a rigorous curriculum which meets Minnesota standards. They also offer Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) including College in the Schools and Advanced Placement courses. Jeanne Swanson is the current principal.

There are many different activities and clubs at WJSH:

Music program

Choir [3] is a program open to all students. Concert Choir is a group of students in grades 9 through 12 and anyone can join. Select Choir is open to students in grades 10 through 12 and is an audition only group.

Showchoir is a branch of the choir program and participation requires the involvement in either Concert or Select Choir. Showchoir groups are also audition only. There are four showchoir groups:

Band is another big program open to all students. There is one jazz band, Jazz I. Students are encouraged every year to prepare a solo for local and state competition, students can also perform in ensembles that they can also take to local and state competitions. There is a symphonic and concert band as well. The marching band program consists of The Waseca Marching Jays. It includes the instrumental sections and a Colorguard section, and is known throughout the region for its tradition of excellence, pride, unity, and discipline. Waseca Marching Jays are 23 time grand champions at Sioux Falls Festival of Band. [4]

Planned shooting and bombing

In May 2014, a combined shooting and bombing plot was discovered and stopped. John David LaDue had planned to kill his family, set a fire, then bomb the school and shoot students. After local police were tipped off, they found bomb-making materials in a storage facility. [5] LaDue was to be charged, as a juvenile, with attempted murder, possession of explosives and property damage. [6] Later, all charges were dropped except for six counts of possession of an explosive device. Psychologists argued that LaDue, who was diagnosed Asperger syndrome and several other mental conditions, continues to pose a risk to society and requires extensive treatment. Witnesses for the prosecution argued that LaDue should be tried as an adult, because he could then receive treatment for a longer period of time. [7] LaDue plead guilty to a single charge of possessing an explosive device; he was sentenced to ten years probation and required to undergo psychiatric treatment. [8]

Mahtomedi Senior High School is a four-year public high school located in Mahtomedi, Minnesota, United States. The school houses grades 9–12 with a total population of approximately 1,146 students. About 22% of this population are from surrounding districts due to open enrollment. The school colors are blue and gold, and the athletic teams are known as the Zephyrs. The district was created in 1870, and the original high school was built in 1930. In 1970 a new high school building was constructed several miles south east of the original building and this remains the current high school campus. Based on standardized test scores the State of Minnesota has awarded the school a five-star rating, the highest level that can be achieved. In 2006, Newsweek ranked the school #675 in its "List of the 1200 Top High Schools in America." The school has also made adequate yearly progress in compliance with No Child Left Behind standards. As of 2015 the school had a demographic of 91% Caucasian, 2% Black, 2% Asian, 2% Two or more races, 2% Hispanic or Latino, and 1% Native American. Finally, out of the total population, 9% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. Mahtomedi competes in the Metro East Conference, having joined that conference at its inception in 2001 soon after being a founding member of the Metro Alliance in 1997. Prior to 1997, Mahtomedi was a member of the Tri-Metro Conference.

It is a public high school with open enrollment located across from the Saint Louis County District Courthouse on scenic 5th Avenue. Virginia High School has a strong music department known for the Marching Blues, the school's marching band. The A Capella choir is directed by Matthew Krage. The high school also participates in Minnesota State High School League sports such as hockey, basketball, volleyball, tennis, football, track & field, cross country, baseball, swimming, golf, soccer and wrestling. Despite budget problems in the past decade due to declining enrollment, Virginia Secondary has had success in standardized state testing, graduation rates, and school pride. Enrollment has been at a slow decline for the last few decades but enrollment has been increasing in the lower grade levels, and open enrollment from neighboring districts has brought new students to the school. Students are unofficially divided into grades 7 & 8 and 9-12. The school day consists of 7 periods ranging from 51 to 52 minutes with 3 to 5 minutes passing time allowed. Other Wednesday, students get out of school an hour early to allow for faculty professional development meetings. Junior high students have a closed lunch period between 3rd and 4th hours while grades 9–12 enjoy an open lunch after 4th hour.
