Olympic weightlifting, or Olympic-style weightlifting, often simply referred to as weightlifting, is a sport in which the athlete attempts a maximum-weight single lift of a barbell loaded with weight plates.
Pyrros Dimas is a Greek former weightlifter. He is currently the technical director for USA Weightlifting, having taken that position in June 2017. Dimas has also been involved in politics as a member of the Greek parliament, representing the Panhellenic Socialist Movement from 2012 to 2015. Dimas is the most decorated Greek athlete in the Olympics and is widely considered as one of the greatest weightlifters of all time, having been three times Olympic Gold Medalist, and three times World Champion.
The Pacific island nation Nauru competed at the Summer Olympic Games first in the 1996 games in Atlanta. The country has made subsequent appearances since then.
Tamio "Tommy" Kono was an American weightlifter in the 1950s and 1960s. Kono set world records in four different weight classes: lightweight, middleweight, light-heavyweight, and middle-heavyweight.

Nikolaj Pešalov is an Olympic and World former champion in weightlifting. For the first part of his career he competed under the Bulgarian flag, but later moved to Croatia which he represented internationally.
Borislav Krastev Gidikov is a former Bulgarian weightlifter. He became Olympic Champion in 1988 in the middleweight class. His career continues from 1979 to 1990. Until 1983 he was a competitor of Hebar Pazardzhik, and then until 1990 he was a competitor of Slavia Sofia. His personal trainers were Hristo Popov and Lyudmil Kochev. In the national team of Bulgaria was trained by the great Ivan Abadjiev. The story of how Borislav chose weightlifting before football is interesting. His father was a bus driver at Hebar football club. When Gidikov wondered which sport to choose in the beginning, his father told him that in football he would depend on another 10 people, and in weightlifting he would depend only on himself. So Borislav chose weightlifting to become one of the greatest Bulgarian weightlifters in the 1980s. His most notable success was in 1988, when he made six successful attempts at the Seoul Olympics to win the gold medal in cat. 75 kg. He is currently Secretary General of the Bulgarian Weightlifting Federation.
Nauru has competed in seven editions of the Commonwealth Games to date, beginning in 1990. This very small country, which had a population of just 9,872 at the time of the 2002 census, succeeded in winning at least one medals on each occasion, including at least one gold in their first four appearances.
Nicolae "Nicu" Vlad is a retired heavyweight weightlifter from Romania. He competed for Romania at the 1984, 1988, 1992 and 1996 Olympics and won a gold, a silver and a bronze medal. He won the world title in 1984, 1986 and 1990 and European title in 1985 and 1986 and set world records in the snatch in 1986 and 1993. Between 1991 and 1996 he lived in Australia and competed for it internationally. In 2006 he was elected member of the International Weightlifting Federation Hall of Fame.

Weightlifting is one of the sports at the quadrennial Commonwealth Games competition. It has been a Commonwealth Games sport since 1950. It is a core sport and must be included in the sporting programme of each edition of the Games.
Nauru took part in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, sending six athletes to compete in boxing and weightlifting. Nauru has won medals in every edition of the Commonwealth Games since it first took part in 1990, and in particular won fifteen medals in weightlifting at the 2002 Games in Manchester.

Ramon (Ray) Gary Epstein, OAM is an Australian Paralympic weightlifter and powerlifting coach. He represented Australia in weightlifting at the 1988 Seoul and 1992 Barcelona Paralympics and was Head Coach of the Australian Paralympic powerlifting team between 2003 and 2013.
Lou Guinares is a New Zealand male weightlifter, competing in the 56 kg category and representing New Zealand at international competitions. He participated at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in the 56 kg event and at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the 56 kg event.

There were a total number of 126 athletes competing, from 23 nations. The women competition were held in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain. It was the 3rd event for the women.
