The 8th All Africa Games were 5–17 October 2003 in Abuja, Nigeria. 53 countries participated in 23 sports. The main venue was the newly constructed Abuja Stadium. The organizing committee was headed by Nigerian Amos Adamu.
Weightlifting competitions at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland were held between 24 July and 2 August at the Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre. Included with the weightlifting event were four powerlifting events for disabled athletes.
The 12th African Games was held from 19 to 31 August 2019 in Rabat, Morocco. This was the first time that the African Games were hosted by Morocco following the country's readmission to the African Union in January 2017.

Dora Afi Abotsi is a Ghanaian female weightlifter, competing in the 63 kg category and representing Ghana at international competitions. She competed at world championships, most recently at the 2009 World Weightlifting Championships, and at several Commonwealth Games.
The 13th African Games hosted in Ghana is being held from 8–23 March 2024. Despite having Accra as the main host city, the games are being held in two sub-host cities: Kumasi and Cape Coast. The games were initially planned to be held in August 2023, however a failure to complete facilities on time and arguments over marketing revenue resulted in the games being delayed to March 2024.

Ghana competed at the 2019 African Games held from 19 to 31 August 2019 in Rabat, Morocco. Ghana competed in 14 sports. Ghana's participation was made possible by financial support from the Ghanaian government. In total, athletes representing Ghana won two gold medals, two silver medals and nine bronze medals and the country finished in 15th place in the medal table.

Winnifred Ntumi is a Ghanaian weightlifter, competing in the 45 kg category and representing Ghana at international competitions. She competed at world championships, most recently at the 2018 Africa Youth Championship, 2019 Africa Weightlifting Championship in Egypt and the 2019 Africa Games in Morocco.
Chaima Rahmouni is a Tunisian weightlifter. She is a two-time medalist at the African Games. She won the gold medal in the women's 64 kg event at the 2022 African Weightlifting Championships held in Cairo, Egypt.
Joy Ogbonne Eze is a Nigerian weightlifter. She is a two-time gold medalist at the African Games. She also won the gold medal in the women's 64 kg event at the 2021 African Weightlifting Championships in Nairobi, Kenya.
Jeanne Gaëlle Eyenga Mbo'ossi is a Cameroonian weightlifter. She represented Cameroon at the 2019 African Games held in Rabat, Morocco and she won the silver medal in the women's 76 kg event. She won the gold medal in her event at the 2021 African Weightlifting Championships held in Nairobi, Kenya.
Rafiatu Folashade Lawal is a Nigerian weightlifter. She won the gold medal in the women's 59 kg event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games held in Birmingham, England. In 2019, she represented Nigeria at the African Games held in Rabat, Morocco and she won the gold medal in the women's 59 kg event. She also won the gold medal in her event at the 2021 African Weightlifting Championships held in Nairobi, Kenya.
Forrester Christopher Osei is a Ghanaian weightlifter, competing in the 94 kg category and representing Ghana at international competitions. He competed at 2016 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships and won gold in his weight division. He competed at World Weightlifting Championships in 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2021. He also competed at the 2019 African Games. He is an executive board member of the International Weightlifting Federation. He is also the Vice Chair of the IWF Athletes' Commission
The 2023 World Weightlifting Championships was a weightlifting competition held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from 4 to 17 September 2023.
