Wendy Joy Nelson (born 25 December 1962) is a South African politician from the North West. She was the North West Finance,Economy and Enterprise Development MEC from 2015 to 2018,and the North West Tourism MEC from 2018 to 2019. She was also a Member of the North West Provincial Legislature for the African National Congress (ANC) from 2014 to 2019. She briefly served as the acting Premier of North West in 2018. She was a Member of the National Assembly from 2009 to 2014. Nelson had also been involved in the local politics of the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality. [1]
Nelson was arrested on charges of fraud in August 2019. Nelson won the case,the North West High Court acquitted Nelson of all charges relating to fraud. [2]
She served as a municipal councillor of the Matlosana Local Municipality from 1994 to 2000. At the same time,she served as a member of the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality. She was appointed a Member of the Mayoral Committee of the district municipality after the 2000 municipal elections. From 2006 to 2009,she was the speaker of the district municipality. [3]
Nelson was a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa from 2009 until 2014. During her time as an MP,she served as a whip of the COGTA committee. [3]
After the 2014 elections,Nelson took office as a Member of the North West Provincial Legislature. Premier Supra Mahumapelo appointed her as the Member of the Executive Council for Finance,Economy and Enterprise Development. [4]
Premier Supra Mahumapelo announced on 9 May 2018 that he would be taking special leave following violent protests calling for his removal. Nelson was sworn in as acting premier. Her swearing-in generated controversy since Nelson,at that stage,was facing fraud allegations. [5] Mahumapelo officially resigned on 23 May 2018 and Nelson continued in her acting position until Job Mokgoro was elected and sworn in. Nelson was appointed to his Executive Council as the MEC for Tourism and served in the post until she left the provincial government in May 2019. [6]
In August 2019,Nelson and former Head of Department (HOD) of the provincial Health Department,Thabo Lekalakala,were arrested by the Hawks on fraud charges. Nelson was involved in Lekalakala's irregular appointment. Nelson's arrest was the first significant arrest of a senior government official following the intervention of the national government in the provincial government's affairs. [7] Nelson and Dr. Lekalakala won the case. The North West High Court acquitted former North West Finance MEC Wendy Nelson and former North West health head of department Dr Andrew Lekalakala on charges of fraud. Opposition parties expressed satisfaction over the arrests. The Democratic Alliance Provincial Leader,Joe McGluwa,said that the arrests were "only a drop in the ocean of North West corruption". [8] The African Transformation Movement (ATM) welcomed the arrests. [9]
Supra Obakeng Ramoeletsi Mahumapelo is a South African politician and musician. He served as the Provincial Secretary of the African National Congress North West Provincial Leadership from 2011 until August 2018. He previously served as Speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature and member of the North West Provincial Legislature and Premier of North West. Mahumapelo stepped down in May 2018 after violent protests called for him to step down.
Collen Maine is a South African politician who was the president of the African National Congress (ANC) Youth League between 2015 and 2019. He was formerly a Member of the Executive Council and Member of the Provincial Legislature in North West province during the premiership of Thandi Modise and Supra Mahumapelo,and he has served in both houses of the national Parliament of South Africa. In December 2017,he was elected to a five-year term on the ANC's National Executive Committee.
Tebogo Job Mokgoro is a South African politician and academic who served as the 6th Premier of North West from June 2018 until his resignation in August 2021. He was a Member of the North West Provincial Legislature during that time. He is a party member of the African National Congress.
Ravigasen Ranganathan "Ravi" Pillay is a South African attorney and African National Congress (ANC) politician who servedthe Member of the Executive Council for Economic Development,Tourism and Environmental Affairs in the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Government from November 2020 until August 2022. He was the MEC for Finance from May 2019 to November 2020 and the MEC for Human Settlements and Public Works from 2011 to 2019. Pillay was elected to the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature in 2009 and served as the legislature's chief whip of the majority party from 2009 to 2011.
Madoda Sambatha is a South African politician serving as the North West MEC for Health since 2018. He has served as a Member of the North West Provincial Legislature for the African National Congress (ANC) since 2014. He was the MEC for Public Works and Roads from 2014 to 2017. Sambatha is also the provincial secretary of the South African Communist Party (SACP).
Boitumelo Theodora Moiloa is a South African politician from the North West serving as the MEC for Social Development since May 2019. She was sworn in as a Member of the North West Provincial Legislature in August 2013. Moiloa is a member of both the African National Congress and the South African Communist Party.
Mmoloki Saviour Cwaile is a South African politician who served as the North West MEC for Cooperative Governance,Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs from November 2020 to August 2021. A member of the African National Congress,he has been a Member of the North West Provincial Legislature since February 2019. Cwaile had previously served as the chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Premier,Finance,Cooperative Governance,Human Settlement and Traditional Affairs in the legislature.
Leonard Jones Basson is a South African politician,a Member of Parliament (MP) for the Democratic Alliance and the DA's provincial leader in the North West. Before being elected unopposed to this position on 21 November 2020,Basson had served as the deputy provincial leader from 2017 to 2020. He has held various posts in the Official Opposition Shadow Cabinet of South Africa. He served as the Shadow Deputy Minister of Water and Sanitation between 2014 and 2017,as the Shadow Minister of Water and Sanitation from 2017 to 2019,and as the Shadow Minister of Human Settlements,Water and Sanitation from 2019 to 2020. Basson has been the Shadow Minister of Water &Sanitation since 2020.
Muntukayise Bhekuyise Ntuli was a South African politician. A member of the African National Congress,he served as a Member of the National Assembly of South Africa from 1999 to 2003,when he resigned amid fraud allegations. He was then elected to the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature in 2009. On 11 September 2019,Ntuli became the Member of the Executive Council for Transport,Community Safety &Liaison,replacing Mxolisi Kaunda,who was elected Mayor of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. Ntuli died on 16 January 2021,from complications of COVID-19.

Motlalepula Ziphora Rosho is a South African politician. A member of the African National Congress,she was elected deputy speaker of the North West Provincial Legislature in 2010. In 2012 she was appointed as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Economic Development,Environment,Conservation and Tourism in the North West Provincial Government. Rosho was discharged from the executive council in 2014 and then served in the provincial legislature as a committee chairperson until December 2018,when she returned to the executive as MEC for Local Government and Human Settlement. Rosho was appointed as MEC for Finance after the 2019 elections.

In August 2022,he was elected Provincial Chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) in the North West,a position he formerly held from 2008 to 2009. Mmaphefo Lucy Matsemela,commonly known as Wendy Matsemela,is a South African politician who was Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Education in the North West from May 2019 to December 2022. She represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2004 to 2009 and in the North West Provincial Legislature from 2009 to 2022. While in the provincial legislature,she served almost continuously in the North West Executive Council,excepting two gaps from 2010 to 2013 and from 2016 to 2018. She resigned from the provincial legislature in December 2022 after Premier Bushy Maape fired her as an MEC.

He previously served as MEC for Community Safety and Transport Management from 2014 to 2016,before spending two years as an ordinary Member of the North West Provincial Legislature from 2016 to 2018. He is a member of the African National Congress (ANC).
