WestNet Wireless is a wireless carrier operator based in Calgary, Alberta. [1] In early 2008, WestNet Wireless submitted its application to Industry Canada's wireless auction.

History

WestNet Wireless initially wanted to launch custom solutions wireless. Their WestNet-WireCELL solution[ clarification needed ] was announced in early 2001 and integrates mobile and land-line phones allowing much more flexibility and unlimited local calling. WestNet's main market idea would allow any compatible device on his CDMA network and unlimited local calling. Such calling options and phone activation was unheard of in the industry at the time. Calgary Wi-Fi network

In 2002, WestNet started to deploy the wide area Wi-Fi network using the 802.11b standard. The first communities were Downtown, Calgary, Radisson Heights, [4] Bridgeland, Victoria Park, Calgary, [5] Forest Lawn, Alberta As of July 2010, WestNet was said to have over 15,000 wireless users on the public hotspot. 2013 Alberta floods

During the 2013 Alberta Floods WestNet was the only ISP in affected parts of Calgary. Many users, specifically in southeast downtown Calgary, were surprised to see a single Wi-Fi network SSID "WestNet City Wi-Fi". Many citizens left without electricity for three months were recharging their portable devices at WestNet Wireless trucks such as converted ENG vehicles.

US IP address feature

Many Calgarians sign up to WestNet to utilize its tier 1 backbone connection AS815 to the internet. Using this service they may be able to obtain a US-based IP address that many see as a bonus to be able to receive a US IP address.[ citation needed ]

WestNet WireCELL integrates POTS telephone lines and base station controllers; users can operate their land line in the coverage area. [7]

CDMA network

WestNet operates a private CDMA network. A public CDMA network is in the works. [8]

In summer 2008, WestNet said it would never charge for incoming text messaging. [9]

Deploying AMPS analog network

Traya announced he would be interested in deploying an Analog network in Alberta as the current networks operated by competitors are decommissioning Analog Services. He projected that many business and consumers still rely on analog as they are built tens of thousands of vehicles and it would not be practical to consumers to shell out thousands of dollars replacing their car phones at auto dealerships. [3]

These are the most widely used computer networks in the world, used globally in home and small office networks to link desktop and laptop computers, tablet computers, smartphones, smart TVs, printers, and smart speakers together and to a wireless router to connect them to the Internet, and in wireless access points in public places like coffee shops, hotels, libraries and airports to provide the public Internet access for mobile devices.

WiMAX Wireless broadband standard

Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) is a family of wireless broadband communication standards based on the IEEE 802.16 set of standards, which provide physical layer (PHY) and media access control (MAC) options.

Alltel Former American telecommunications company

Alltel Wireless was a wireless service provider, primarily based in the United States. Before acquisitions by Verizon Wireless and AT&T, it served 34 states and had approximately 13 million subscribers. As a regulatory condition of the acquisition by Verizon, a small portion of Alltel was spun off and continued to operate under the same name in six states, mostly in rural areas. Following the merger, Alltel remained the ninth largest wireless telecommunications company in the United States, with approximately 800,000 customers. On January 22, 2013, AT&T announced they were acquiring what remained of Alltel from Atlantic Tele-Network for $780 million in cash.

Municipal wireless network

A municipal wireless network is a citywide wireless network. This usually works by providing municipal broadband via Wi-Fi to large parts or all of a municipal area by deploying a wireless mesh network. The typical deployment design uses hundreds of wireless access points deployed outdoors, often on poles. The operator of the network acts as a wireless internet service provider.

Generic Access Network (GAN) is a protocol that extends mobile voice, data and multimedia applications over IP networks. Unlicensed Mobile Access (UMA) is the commercial name used by mobile carriers for external IP access into their core networks. The BlackBerry Pearl was a series of smartphones developed by Research In Motion, and was the first BlackBerry device with a camera and media player. It was originally released on September 12, 2006. T-Mobile was the first US carrier to release the phone as a carrier device. The last BlackBerry Pearl released was the 9100 series on May 13, 2010. After this model was cleared out, RIM discontinued the Pearl series.

Albert Park/Radisson Heights Neighbourhood in Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Albert Park/Radisson Heights is a residential neighbourhood in the southeast quadrant of Calgary, Alberta. It is bounded to the west by the Bow River and Deerfoot Trail, to the north by Memorial Drive and to the south by 17 Avenue SE. The community of Forest Lawn lies to the east.

HTC Touch

The HTC Touch, also known as the HTC P3450 or its codename the HTC Elf or the HTC Vogue for the CDMA variant, is a Windows Mobile 6-powered Pocket PC designed and manufactured by HTC. Its main, unique feature is a user interface named TouchFLO that detects a sweeping motion and can distinguish between a finger and a stylus. TouchFLO incorporates stylus-free access to a music player, a photo album, a video player and a picture-based contact book. The global launch of the Touch was in Leicester Square, London, on 5 June 2007, and the phone was initially available in two colours: black and green. The carrier bound names for this phone include Verizon Wireless XV6900, T-Mobile MDA Touch, O2 XDA Nova, Okta Touch and Vodafone VPA Touch.

HTC Touch Pro

The HTC Touch Pro is a smart phone from the Touch series of Internet-enabled Windows Mobile Pocket PC smartphones designed and marketed by HTC Corporation of Taiwan. It is an enhanced version of the HTC Touch Diamond with the addition of a left-side slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a microSD card slot, and a camera flash. The Touch Pro smartphone's functions include those of a camera phone and a portable media player in addition to text messaging and multimedia messaging. It also offers Internet services including e-mail, instant messaging, web browsing, and local Wi-Fi connectivity. Depending on its market, it is a quad-band GSM or quad-band UMTS phone with GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA, and HSUPA or a tri-band CDMA phone with 1xEV-DO Rev A. All versions feature TouchFLO 3D — a new enhanced version of the TouchFLO interface, unique only to the latest Touch series. In March 2009, HTC announced a new version, the Touch Pro2 which has a larger screen (3.6") and a redesigned slide out QWERTY keyboard with spaces between the keys.

The CORE Shopping Centre Shopping mall in Calgary, Alberta, Canada

The Core Shopping Centre, which consists of TD Square, the Holt Renfrew building, and the former Calgary Eaton Centre, is the dominant shopping complex located in the downtown core of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It spans three city blocks and contains approximately 160 retailers on four levels. The property also contains four major office towers and the historic Lancaster Building. It is the hub of downtown Calgary's +15 skywalk system, and as such is the busiest shopping centre in the city by pedestrian count, with around 250,000 visitors passing through each week. The centre's architectural focal point is a vast suspended glass skylight which spans the length of the complex. As of October 29, 2010, The Core offers free evening and weekend parking at its underground lots.

Super Wi-Fi refers to IEEE 802.11g/n/ac/ax wifi implementations over unlicensed 2.4 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi bands but with performance enhancements for antenna control, multiple path beam selection, advance control for best path, and applied intelligence for load balancing giving it bi-directional connectivity range for standard wifi enabled devices over distances of up to 1,700 meters. Hong Kong-based Altai Technologies developed and patented Super Wi-Fi technology and manufacturers a product line of base stations and access points deployed extensively around the world beginning in 2007. Due to its extended range and advanced interference mitigation, Super Wi-Fi is primarily used for expansive outdoor and heavy industrial use cases. Krysp Wireless, LLC is Altai Technologies' Master Distributor for North America focused on the sale and distribution of Super Wi-Fi products for large enterprises, WISPs and municipal deployments. Altai's Super Wi-Fi technology should not be confused with the FCC's use of the term relating to proposed plans announced in 2012 for using TV white space spectrum to support delivery of long range internet access.

Republic Wireless is an American mobile virtual network operator. It is a subsidiary of Dish Wireless. Republic sells low cost mobile phone service which defaults to Wi-Fi. When Wi-Fi is unavailable, Republic falls back on its partner T-Mobile's two national GSM and CDMA networks.

G3 Telecom is a telecommunications company based in Toronto. Established in 1999, it is a facilities-based telecommunications reseller registered with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission and U.S. Federal Communications Commission and serves customers in both countries with over 3 million calls processed monthly. Its offerings include long distance, Voice over IP (VoIP) home phone, and an alternative international roaming service which is being offered under the sub-brand G3 Wireless. G3 Telecom is registered with the Better Business Bureau where it currently maintains an A+ rating.
