West Hockey Association runs field hockey leagues based in the West of England and South West of England. The leagues feed teams into the Men's and Women's England Hockey Leagues and receives teams from sub-regional (county) leagues.

Field hockey Team sport version of hockey played on grass or turf with sticks and a round ball

Field hockey is a team game of the hockey family. The game can be played on grass, water turf, artificial turf or synthetic field as well as an indoor board surface. Each team plays with eleven players, including the goalie. Players use sticks made out of wood, carbon fibre, fibre glass or a combination of carbon fibre and fibre glass in different quantities to hit a round, hard, plastic ball. The length of the stick is based on the player's individual height. Only one face of the stick is allowed to be used. Goalies often have a different kind of stick, however they can also use an ordinary field hockey stick. The specific goal-keeping sticks have another curve at the end of the stick, this is to give them more surface area to save the ball. The uniform consists of shin guards, shoes, shorts, a mouth guard and a jersey. Today, the game is played globally, mainly in parts of Western Europe, South Asia, Southern Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, and parts of the United States. Known simply as "hockey" in many territories, the term "field hockey" is used primarily in Canada and the United States where ice hockey is more popular. In Sweden, the term "landhockey" is used and to some degree also in Norway where it is governed by Norway's Bandy Association.

The West of England is a loose and locationally unspecific term sometimes given to the area surrounding the city and county of Bristol, England, and also sometimes applied more widely and in other parts of South West England.

League Structure

The male league is West of England & South Wales (WoESW) Hockey League (currently the GoCrea8 Hockey League for sponsorship reasons) and covers fifteen counties. The league comprises 25 divisions across seven tiers of the league pyramid, with the Premiership division at Tier 1.

The female league is the West Clubs Women's Hockey League, (a separate league association covers South Wales: the South Wales Women's Hockey League. [1] ). The structure consists of a Premier Division 1, with subsequent lower Premier divisions, followed by regional and county divisions. [2]

Avon (county) former non-metropolitan and ceremonial county in the west of England

Avon was a non-metropolitan and ceremonial county in the west of England that existed between 1974 and 1996. The county was named after the River Avon, which flows through the area. It was formed from the county boroughs of Bristol and Bath, together with parts of the administrative counties of Gloucestershire and Somerset.

Devon County of England

Devon, also known as Devonshire, is a county of England, reaching from the Bristol Channel in the north to the English Channel in the south. It is part of South West England, bounded by Cornwall to the west, Somerset to the north east, and Dorset to the east. The city of Exeter is the county town. The county includes the districts of East Devon, Mid Devon, North Devon, South Hams, Teignbridge, Torridge, and West Devon. Plymouth and Torbay are each geographically part of Devon, but are administered as unitary authorities. Combined as a ceremonial county, Devon's area is 6,707 km2 and its population is about 1.1 million.

East Grinstead Hockey Club sports club

East Grinstead Hockey Club is a field hockey club based in East Grinstead, West Sussex, England. It is one of the most successful clubs in the United Kingdom with National League Outdoor and Indoor honours. It was founded in 1897. The home ground is at EGSC, near Saint Hill. The club has a water-based pitch with seats for the spectators as well as a 3G Hockey/Football pitch and clubhouse. The stadium is named Saint Hill with a maximum capacity of 250.

The Midland Regional Hockey Association is the organising body for field hockey in the Midlands, England. It feeds teams into the Men's and Women's England Hockey Leagues and receives teams from regional and county leagues.

Duchy Hockey Club is a Cornish field hockey team based in Redruth, Cornwall, UK. As of 2018–19 the club are currently the newest hockey club in Cornwall, having been formed in January 2009. Duchy are the only hockey club based in the Camborne/Redruth conurbation. The club caters for both male and female players.

Surbiton Hockey Club is a field hockey club based in Long Ditton, Surrey, England. The club is one of the oldest hockey clubs in the world, being established in 1874. The home ground is based in Long Ditton, at Sugden Road. The club is currently the leading club in England with the women's team winning the league for five years in succession and the men's team winning the last two titles.

The East Regional Hockey Association is the organising body for field hockey in the East of England. It feeds teams into the Men's and Women's England Hockey Leagues and takes teams from sub-regional leagues.
