"When You Lie Next to Me" is the debut single by American country music singer-songwriter Kellie Coffey. Coffey wrote the single with Trina Harmon and J.D. Martin. It was released on December 3, 2001 to country radio via BNA Records as the lead single to her debut studio album of the same name.

Contents

The song was a big hit, peaking at number eight on the US Hot Country Songs chart. As of 2024, it is Coffey's only top ten hit on the chart. It also crossed over to adult contemporary radio, peaking at number 14 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Because of the song's success and her preceding singles not performing well, Coffey has been labeled as a one-hit wonder.

Content

"When You Lie Next to Me" is a country ballad, backed by piano and strings with steel guitar fills. The song's female narrator describes telling her lover of the intense feelings she has for him whenever "[he] lies next to [her]," insisting that they don't waste any chance to spend time with each other.

Critical reception

In his review of the album, Stephen Thomas Erlewine of Allmusic indicated the song as one of the standout tracks and mentioning that it "could be [a] staple on adult contemporary radio. [2]

Music video

The music video was directed by Deaton-Flanigen Productions. In the video, Coffey is shown performing the song from various locations within a large house: standing in a hallway with the wind blowing in, sitting on a pillow surrounded by lit candles, and resting on a pedestal in the middle of a pool.

"When You Lie Next to Me," after spending 33 weeks on the chart, reached a peak of number 8 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart for the week of July 13, 2002. [3] The song also had crossover success on the U.S. Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks chart, achieving a peak of number 14 in January 2003.

Lonestar is an American country music group from Texas. The group consists of Drew Womack, Michael Britt, Dean Sams, and Keech Rainwater (drums). Britt, Sams, and Rainwater co-founded the band in 1992 with original lead vocalist Richie McDonald and bass guitarist/vocalist John Rich. Rich exited the band in 1998 and went on to join Big Kenny as one-half of the duo Big & Rich. Since his departure, Lonestar has relied alternatingly on session and touring musicians for bass guitar accompaniment. McDonald exited the band in 2007 to record as a solo artist, and was replaced by former McAlyster vocalist Cody Collins before returning in 2011. Kellie Ann Coffey is an American country music artist. She made her debut in 2002 with the release of her single "When You Lie Next to Me", a Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks charts. Her debut album, also titled When You Lie Next to Me, was released the same year on BNA Records, and in 2003, Coffey won the Top New Female Vocalist award from the Academy of Country Music. She was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame in 2018.

When You Lie Next to Me is the debut studio album by American country music singer-songwriter Kellie Coffey. Produced by Dann Huff, it was released on May 7, 2002, via BNA Records. While at a showcase in a Los Angeles restaurant where Coffey used to work at, she was signed a publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music. She would then move to Nashville where she would then be signed to BNA Records in 2001, which was the home of many big-name country artists like Kenny Chesney, Lonestar, and Merle Haggard. A songwriter, Coffey co-wrote seven of the 11 tracks on the album. As of 2024, it is Coffey's sole album released under a major record label.

"Shadows in the Moonlight" is a song written by Charlie Black and Rory Bourke, and recorded by Canadian country pop music singer Anne Murray. It was released in May 1979 as the second single from the album New Kind of Feeling. The song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart that July, and was one of three chart-toppers for her during the year. "Shadows in the Moonlight" was Murray's third No. 1 single on the country chart and fourth overall.
