Wichita Transit is the public transportation department of the City of Wichita which operates paratransit and transit bus services within Wichita, Kansas, United States. [1] [5] In 2023, the system had a ridership of 1,169,400, or about 3,800 per weekday as of the third quarter of 2024.
Wichita Transit maintains a fleet of 51 ADA-compliant buses and 26 wheelchair-lift vans.
All regular Wichita Transit buses are equipped free wi-fi and bike racks. [6]
Transit Services operate 17 fixed route bus lines and 17 demand-response paratransit routes. They report about two million yearly fixed-route trips and 320,800 yearly disabled paratransit trips.
Using a few replica trolleys, the city also operates the Q Line shuttle service through downtown and adjoining areas, in conjunction with the Wichita Downtown Development Corporation (chiefly during recreational days/hours, typically evenings and weekends, and during major conventions downtown).
City buses, including the imitation trolley cars, are sometimes available for charter.
Wichita Transit evolved out of a long history of mass transit in Wichita. Early buses were horse-drawn. By the late 1800s and early 1900s, the city had developed a trolley rail system connecting key commercial areas to the rest of the city. By the late 1920s, the system had switched to electric trolleys.
During the 1930s/1940s, the system shifted to conventional gasoline/diesel-powered buses, and reached its peak ridership during World War II, as the city became a hub of aircraft manufacturing for the war. Routes connected nearly all of the population of the city to workplaces and commercial centers.
Following World War II and the early postwar years, in 1962, the city government took over transit—through its Metropolitan Transit Authority—to provide bus service to most of the city, chiefly through a "hub-and-spoke" system converging on downtown. The decline of downtowns, nationwide, was repeated in Wichita during the 1960s and 1970s, but the city retained its downtown hub system.
In the 1980s, and subsequently, now renamed Wichita Transit, the system generally has declined in ridership and capacity, with a brief resurgence of interest at the turn of the 21st century. [5]
In 2016, Greyhound Lines will be closing its station and relocating to the Wichita Transit building. [7] Greyhound Lines provides intercity bus service northeast to Topeka, Kansas and south to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. BeeLine Express (subcontractor of Greyhound) provides daily bus service north towards Salina, Kansas and west towards Pueblo, Colorado.
Wichita's transit system is smaller in "revenue miles per capita" than comparable cities nationwide. [8]
Like most transit systems, nationwide, Wichita Transit struggles continuously with financial difficulties. Rider fares do not bring in enough revenue to support the system, and it relies heavily on subsidies from the federal government and other entities. [8] [9]
In 2010–2012, consultants for the city, advising the city on its major push for downtown redevelopment, emphasized that major transit improvements were needed for effective downtown redevelopment and growth as envisioned by city plans and proposals. [10] [ permanent dead link ]
In 2013, the non-profit Kansas Health Institute produced a "health impact assessment" ("HIA") on Wichita Transit, and its possible developments, a study and review, concluding that expanded hours and routes would have optimal impact on the health of the community's people. [11]
Specifically, the KHI's researchers advised that a "grid" bus system (following major streets in straight lines) should replace the city's current "hub-and-spoke" system (routes radiating out from, and returning to, a downtown transit center), and advised that it should make more frequent stops, extend service after 6 p.m., and add Sunday service. They also recommended ways to maximize existing bus service. One was to allow bus passengers to carry more than two grocery sacks. [11]
Attempts by the city council to pass a one-cent sales tax by referendum—to fund transit along with selected other city programs and projects (water, jobs, etc.) – were overwhelmingly defeated in November 2014. [4] [9]
The current city council considered proposing a one-tenth of one cent ($0.001) sales tax committed exclusively to transit, and in June was expected to vote on it, in August 2015, as part of the city budget process. [4] [9] [12]
In mid-July 2015, the city manager presented the 2016–2017 proposed city budget, which indicated that service reductions of $2 million (or 25%) would be required to ensure a balanced budget. The City Council, however, instructed staff to find solutions to close the funding gap for 2016. Discussed solutions involved $1.2 million in deferred road construction delayed from 2016 to 2017 (with scheduled 2017 bus replacements moved up to 2016), $500,000 in fuel savings through commitment to a fuel contract, and allocation of $300,000 from the city's permanent reserve fund (the city had $26.9 million in reserves as of July 2015). Mayor Longwell, who had campaigned on transit improvements in the 2014 election, described the effort as "painful," but important, describing transit as "that critical to our community." However, the previously discussed sales tax increase (for transit) did not figure into the budget plan, and no increase to the property tax mill levy was projected in the city budget plan discussions during July 2015. (Public hearings were pending for Aug. 4 and Aug. 11, the date that the city's 2016–2017 budget will be adopted.) [13]

It operates buses, light rail, commuter rail, and high-occupancy vehicle lanes in Dallas and twelve of its suburbs. Trinity Metro is a transit agency located in and serving the city of Fort Worth, Texas and its suburbs in surrounding Tarrant County, part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Since 1983, it was previously known officially as the Fort Worth Transportation Authority (FWTA), and branded itself as The T. As of January 29, 2018 the Board of Directors has voted to rebrand bus services as Trinity Metro, replacing the previous and long standing name. In 2023, the system had a ridership of 5,717,800, or about 19,400 per weekday as of the third quarter of 2024.
The Hamilton Street Railway (HSR) is the public transport agency for Hamilton, Ontario. The name is a legacy of the company's early period, when public transit in Hamilton was primarily served by streetcars. Although streetcars are no longer used in the city today, the HSR operates bus and paratransit services, with a ridership of 21 million passengers a year.
The Champaign–Urbana Mass Transit District is a mass transit system that operates in the Champaign–Urbana metropolitan area in central-eastern Illinois. MTD is headquartered in Urbana and operates its primary hub at the intermodal Illinois Terminal in downtown Champaign. The main hub of the RIPTA system is Kennedy Plaza, a large bus terminal in downtown Providence, Rhode Island. Average daily ridership as of the third quarter of 2024 is 41,900. The agency operates 59 fixed-route bus routes and 7 demand-responsive routes, together serving 37 out of 39 Rhode Island municipalities.
Williamsburg Area Transit Authority (WATA) is a multi-jurisdiction transportation agency providing transit bus and ADA Paratransit services in the City of Williamsburg, James City County, York County in the Historic Triangle area and Surry County, VA of the Virginia Peninsula subregion of Hampton Roads in southeastern Virginia.
GoRaleigh is the transit system responsible for operating most of the public transportation services in Raleigh, North Carolina. The system operates 27 fixed routes throughout the city's municipal area and also operates five regional/express routes in partnership with GoTriangle, the regional provider. GoRaleigh is contracted to operate two additional routes, an express route to the Wake Tech Community College campus south of Raleigh and a local circulator service in the Town of Wake Forest. Capital Area Transit, also known as CAT, was rebranded to GoRaleigh in 2015 under the consolidated GoTransit, a joint branding of municipal and regional transit systems for the Research Triangle. The San Diego Metropolitan Transit System is a public transit service provider for San Diego County, California. The agency operates a transit system that includes the San Diego MTS bus system, San Diego Trolley, and Rapid. MTS also controls the San Diego and Arizona Eastern (SD&AE) freight railway and regulates taxicabs, jitneys, and other private for-hire passenger transportation services.
The Jule, formerly known as KeyLine Transit, is the operator of mass transit within the City of Dubuque, Iowa. The Jule offers transit bus routes throughout the city, trolley-replica transportation in Downtown Dubuque and the Port of Dubuque, and on-demand paratransit "MiniBus" service citywide. As of the 2011 rebranding, the transit system and city are now both named after Julien Dubuque. In FY 2010, the Jule recorded 371,000 rides.
Jonesboro Economical Transit System, better known as JETS, is the public transportation system in Jonesboro, the largest city in northeastern Arkansas. There are three scheduled bus routes and paratransit service is provided for individuals who cannot use the regular fixed-route bus service.
The Sioux Area Metro (SAM) is the local governmental transit agency in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and the state's largest public transportation operator. They provide multiple scheduled fixed routes and paratransit services. In December 2023, city council members voted unanimously to select Via as its technology and operations partner. In 2023, the system had a ridership of 559,400, or about 1,800 per weekday as of the third quarter of 2024.
The South Bend Public Transportation Corporation is a municipal bus system that serves the cities of South Bend and Mishawaka, as well as the nearby suburbs of Notre Dame and Roseland, in the very north of the U.S. state of Indiana. It is the most recent incarnation of the South Bend Railway Company, a street railway company that was founded on May 25, 1885. Transpo receives funding from local, state and federal taxes. In 2023, the system had a ridership of 1,262,400, or about 5,000 per weekday as of the third quarter of 2024.
Mountain Metropolitan Transit (MMT) is the primary public transportation operator for the Colorado Springs metropolitan area. It provides bus service between Colorado Springs, Manitou Springs, and Security-Widefield. There are currently thirty-four local routes. In 2023, the system had a ridership of 2,991,300, or about 12,100 per weekday as of the third quarter of 2024.
The Decatur Public Transit System is the primary provider of mass transportation in Macon County, Illinois. Fourteen main routes, plus one downtown shuttle using replica trolleys, serve the region.
Terre Haute Transit Utility or Terre Haute City Bus provides public transportation in the city of Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana.
The Muskegon Area Transit System (MATS) is the primary provider of mass transportation in Muskegon County, Michigan. Service is provided from Monday through Friday along seven routes. The agency also provides a Complementary ADA Paratransit Service that operates within 3/4 mile of the fixed routes. A micro-transit service called Go2 provides on-demand service Monday-Saturday. Go2 is sponsored by MATS and provided by Via. In 2023, the system had a ridership of 242,300, or about 900 per weekday as of the third quarter of 2024.
Rapid City Rapid Ride is the provider of mass transportation in the City of Rapid City, Pennington County, South Dakota providing fixed route bus service since 1992. Five scheduled bus routes operate Monday through Saturday at 30 minutes intervals. Dial-A-Ride provides ADA paratransit service for qualified customers. City View Trolley is a replica trolley service.
