Wiener Taschenoper (Vienna pocket opera) is an Austrian opera company based in Vienna. [1] Insight Guides cite them and the Neue Oper Wien as "two of the independent groups which perform exclusively 20th and 21st-century opera". [2]

Productions

Choreographer Saskia Hölbling staged in 2002 Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda by Claudio Monteverdi combined with A-Ronne by Luciano Berio. In 2004 she developed a choreography with four dancers for Labyrinth in collaboration with the composer Wolfgang Mitterer and the video artist Alexej Paryla, It was performed at the Semper Depot of Vienna by DANS.KIAS, with Katia Plaschka, soprano. [3] [4]

In 2008, the second act of Karlheinz Stockhausen's Donnerstag aus Licht , titled Michaels Reise um die Erde (Michael's Journey Around the Earth) was staged, in collaboration with the Wiener Festwochen, by Carlus Padrissa of La Fura dels Baus, with stage direction by Roland Olbeter. It was performed by Marco Blaauw (trumpet), Nicola Jürgensen (basset horn), and musikFabrik, directed by Peter Rundel. [5] The production was also shown in Cologne, Venice, Warsaw, Dresden and Paris. In 2009, Hölbling produced three works by Berio: Naturale, Visage and Sequenza V. [7]

Operas for children

Since 2006 the Wiener Taschenoper has produced contemporary operas for children. [8] A series of operas based on fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm have included Wolfgang Mitterer's Das Tapfere Schneiderlein, Ali N. Askin's Eisenhans, and in 2010 Die Gänsemagd by Iris ter Schiphorst. [9]

In 2008 John Cage's A House Full of Music was staged, [10] accompanied by detailed background information and material for teachers. [11] Walther Soyka's Das kleine Gespenst after Otfried Preußler's book was performed in 2010 in collaboration with the Graz Opera. [8]

Lydia Steier American stage director based in Germany

Lydia Steier is an American opera director who has made an international career based in Germany. She directed the Swiss premiere of Stockhausen's Donnerstag aus Licht, chosen by critics as "Best Production of the Year" in 2016. In 2018, she became the first woman to stage Mozart's Die Zauberflöte at the Salzburg Festival, for the opening performance in 2018.

Stefan Soltész is an Austrian conductor of Hungarian origin. Trained in Vienna, he was from 1997 to 2013 he was artistic director of the Aalto Theatre and Generalmusikdirektor in Essen, leading the opera house to international recognition.

Nicola Jürgensen is a German clarinetist and academic teacher. She played principal clarinet with the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne from 2001 to 2018, and has been professor of clarinet at Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen from 2018. She is active internationally as a soloist and chamber music player, and has made recordings. Besides the traditional repertoire, she is focused on contemporary music. She performed on stage in a production of Karlheinz Stockhausen's Michaels Reise um die Erde in Vienna and New York City, among others.

Claus Guth German theatre director

Claus Guth is a German theatre director, focused on opera. He has directed operas at major houses and festivals, including world premieres such as works of the Munich Biennale, and Berio's Cronaca del luogo at the Salzburg Festival in 1999.
