William Dargan Bridge, opened in 2004, is a 162 metre cable-stayed bridge in Dundrum, Dublin, Ireland. It carries the Green Line of the Luas over the busy Taney junction, of the R112 and R117 regional roads as well as the little-known Slang River. The bridge connects rail alignments which were formerly part of the Harcourt Street railway line. [1]
The name commemorates William Dargan. [2] The engineer who designed the Harcourt Street railway line, which much of the Green Line now follows.
Roughan & O’Donovan provided full engineering design services for the bridge. [3]
Construction started in October 2001. [4] The deck, 1.325 metres deep, was constructed using precast concrete shell segments that were glued and stressed together, before being filled with in-situ concrete. The 50 metre high pylon was made using reinforced concrete and 13 pairs of high-tensile steel cables. [5]
Construction was completed on 2 August 2002, where, in front of several hundred onlookers, Minister for Transport Seamus Brennan remotely tightened a stress block. [6] The entire project had an approximate cost of €11 million. [5] The first Luas passed over the bridge on 11 Feb 2004 during a test of the line. [7]
Adverts were placed in local media looking for suggestions on what to name the bridge. The final name was chosen by a committee set up by the Railway Procurement Agency. It included the Luas chief architect, Jim Quinlan, historian Briain MacAonghusa and a representative of South Dublin County Council. Proposals included; William Dargan, Stephen Roche, Canon Harrington, and Suas Luas (suas being the Irish word for "up"). The bridge was official named the William Dargan Bridge by Seamus Brennan in a public ceremony on 19 July 2004. [8] Where a ribbon was cut by Fr Dan Dargan, the great-grandson of William Dargan. After the death of Seamus Brennan in July 2008, Fianna Fáil councilor Gerry Horkan proposed the bridge should be renamed after him, [11] which was turned down.
William DarganMRDS was arguably the most important Irish engineer of the 19th century and certainly the most important figure in railway construction. Dargan designed and built Ireland's first railway line from Dublin to Dún Laoghaire in 1833. In total he constructed over 1,300 km of railway to important urban centres of Ireland. He was a member of the Royal Dublin Society (RDS) and also helped establish the National Gallery of Ireland. He was also responsible for the Great Dublin Exhibition held at Leinster lawn in 1853. His achievements were honoured in 1995, when the Dargan Railway Bridge in Belfast was opened, and again in 2004 when the Dargan Bridge, Dublin a new cable stayed bridge for Dublin's Light Railway Luas were both named after him.
Luas is a tram system in Dublin, Ireland. There are two main lines: the Green Line, which began operating on 30 June 2004, and the Red Line which opened on 26 September 2004. Since then, the red line has been extended and split into different branches further out of the city and the green line has been extended north and south as a single line. Since the northern extension of the green line in 2017, the two lines intersect in the city centre. The system now has 67 stops and 42.5 kilometres (26.4 mi) of revenue track, which in 2023 carried 48.2 million passengers, an increase of 24% compared to 2022.
Heuston Station, also known as Dublin Heuston, is one of Dublin's largest railway stations and links the capital with the south, southwest and west of Ireland. It is operated by Iarnród Éireann (IÉ), the national railway operator. It also houses the head office of its parent company, Córas Iompair Éireann (CIÉ). Goatstown is a small Southside suburb of Dublin, Ireland. To the west is Dundrum, to the east is Blackrock, to the south is Kilmacud, and to the north is Clonskeagh. The area is bordered by Mount Merrion to which it shares many local amenities. Entrances to University College Dublin can be found on Roebuck Road, and due to the areas proximity to the campus, the suburb is highly attractive to university students. It is mainly a residential area, with a primary school called Our Lady's Grove, and two all-girls secondary schools, Mount Anville Secondary School and Our Lady's Grove Secondary School. There are amenities such as restaurants, a pub, a post office and various shops. With the recent implementation of the frequent S6 bus route to Blackrock via UCD Belfield recently, the area now benefits from connection to the DART line, as well as being served by the 11 Dublin Bus route through the centre of the village.
Dundrum Town Centre is a shopping centre located in Dundrum, Dublin, Ireland. It is one of Ireland's two largest shopping centres with over 131 shops, 47 restaurants, 3 amusement facilities and a cinema, retail floor space of 111,484 m2 (1,200,000 sq ft) and almost 140,000 m2 (1,500,000 sq ft) total floor space, and over 3,000 car parking spaces. It is located just south of the centre of the suburban village of Dundrum, within the wider eponymous area. It has annual footfall in excess of 18 million.
The Green Line is one of the two lines of Dublin's Luas light rail system. The Green Line was formerly entirely in the south side of Dublin city. It mostly follows the route of the old Harcourt Street railway line, which was reserved for possible re-use when it closed in 1958. The Green Line allows for passengers to transfer at O’ Connell GPO and Marlborough to Luas Red Line services and also allows commuters to use Broombridge as an interchange station to reach outer suburbs such as Castleknock and Ongar as well as Iarnrod Éireann services.
The Harcourt Street Railway Line was a railway line that ran from Harcourt Street in Dublin through the southern suburbs to Bray. It was one of the Dublin and South Eastern Railway's two northern main lines, the other being the coastal line to Westland Row.
Cherrywood is a developing suburb of Dublin, Ireland, bordering Cabinteely, Loughlinstown and Rathmichael. It is located to the southeast of the city, in Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown. The development commenced on a greenfield site in 1998 and primarily comprises Cherrywood Business Park and new residential and retail development. Development of the suburb stalled following the economic downturn, but resumed in the late 2010s and remains in continuous state of development as of late 2024.
Dargan Bridge is a railway bridge which crosses the River Lagan in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Opened in 1994, it directly connected the Newry and Bangor lines with the lines to Larne and Derry for the first time. The R112 road is a regional road in south Dublin, Ireland. It begins at the junction with the R148 road at Chapelizod and arcs southeastwards, then eastwards across the middle of south Dublin, ending at the Mount Merrion junction of the R138. The road is a single-carriageway, with cycle lanes on some stretches. Improvements to the road have been made over the last 10 years, the most significant being at Dundrum Cross where the road was widened to make room for the new Luas bridge and Dundrum bypass.
The Rosie Hackett Bridge is a road and tram bridge in Dublin, Ireland, which opened on 20 May 2014. Spanning the River Liffey and joining Marlborough Street to Hawkins Street, it is used solely by public transport, taxis, cyclists and pedestrians. It is 26 metres wide and 48 metres long, and is a single span, smooth concrete structure, with the underside of the bridge designed to be as high above the water as possible so that river traffic is not impeded. It was built to carry the extended Luas Green line, and was budgeted at €15 million. It is named for trade unionist Rosie Hackett (1893–1976).
Rialto is a stop on the Luas light-rail tram system in Dublin, Ireland. It opened in 2004 as a stop on the Red Line. The stop is at the southern side of St. James's Hospital, adjacent to James's Walk, near the areas of Rialto and Kilmainham.
Carrickmines is a stop on the Luas light rail tram system in Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown, County Dublin, Ireland, which serves the nearby village of Carrickmines. It opened in 2010 and was built on the site of a disused heavy rail station of the same name.
Charlemont is a stop on the Luas light-rail tram system in Dublin, Ireland. It opened in 2004 on the Green Line from St Stephen's Green to Sandyford. It provides access to parts of the south inner city, including Portobello.

It opened in 2004 as the southern terminus of the Green Line, which re-uses the alignment of the Harcourt Street railway line which closed in 1958. Sandyford Luas stop is located on the same site as a station on the old line called Stillorgan.
Milltown is a stop on the Luas light rail tram system in Dublin, Ireland which serves Milltown, Dublin and southern parts of Dartry, including Trinity Hall. It opened in 2004 as a stop on the Green Line, which re-uses the alignment of the Harcourt Street railway line which closed in 1958. Milltown Luas stop is located a few yards north of the site of the former rail station of the same name.
