Laut.de editor Philipp Kause called the album a "great record" and noted: "In a few years the release will be seen as a strong milestone." [1] Andrian Kreye, writing for Süddeutsche Zeitung , wrote that "on her new album Willpower, singer Joy Denalane collapses the space-time of pop. Wonderful." [2] Westdeutscher Rundfunk critic Marc Mühlenbrock found that "Denalane remains true to her great love for the soul of bygone eras, but travels a decade further in the time machine: after the sound of the late 60s, it is now the turn of the late 70s. Her band and her voice also master this sound vision skillfully." [3]
Willpower debuted and peaked at number 33 on the German Albums Chart for the week of October 13, 2023. [4] It became Denalane's lowest-charting album yet as well as her first album to miss the top ten in Germany. [4]

Sarah Connor is a German pop singer. She rose to prominence after she signed with X-Cell Records in 2000 and released her debut album Green Eyed Soul (2001) the following year. She followed it with a series of successful albums, including Unbelievable (2002), Key to My Soul (2003), Naughty but Nice (2005), Christmas in My Heart (2005), Soulicious (2007), Sexy as Hell (2008) and Real Love (2010). Having received some negative publicity at the time of the release of her previous album Du bist gut for refusing in interviews to talk about the 1980s, Nena chose to celebrate the past with her next studio album. The first single released from the album, "Lieder von früher", enthuses about the pleasure of dancing to old records, and the title track happily reflects on Nena's being best known for a few songs from the 1980s.
