W. A. "Winkie" Wilkins is a Democratic member of the North Carolina General Assembly. He represented the 2nd House District (including constituents in Granville and Person counties) from January 2013 until December 2014. Citing his health,Wilkins announced in 2014 that he would not seek another term in the legislature. [1]
Previously,before legislative redistricting,Wilkins represented the 55th House district from 2004 through 2012. That district included constituents in Durham and Person counties.

Edd Nye is an American former politician. He was a Democratic member of the North Carolina General Assembly representing the US state's twenty-second House district,including constituents in Bladen and Sampson counties. An insurance professional from Elizabethtown,North Carolina,Nye is serving in his thirteenth term in the state House,where he holds the position of Permanent Democratic Caucus Chair. Nye is one of the chief budget writers in the North Carolina House. Nye previously served one term in the state Senate. He was predeceased by his wife,Irene,in February 2024. They were married for 69 years.

The primary election was held on May 8,2012 with a primary run-off held on July 17,2012.

The election coincided with the elections for other offices,including the U.S Senate,U.S. House of Representatives,and state senate. The primary election was originally going to be held on March 8,2022,with a run-off in June 2022;however,the North Carolina Supreme Court delayed the primary until May 17,2022,pending challenges over the State's districts and paused candidate filing. Prior to this pause,several candidates had already filed to run. The elections would be held under new districts passed by the General Assembly in House Bill 976 to account for population changes following the 2020 census. The maps were later overturned by the North Carolina Supreme Court,who ordered the legislature to draw new maps. The North Carolina General Assembly later redrew the maps which were upheld by the Wake County Superior Court and the North Carolina Supreme Court. Candidate filing resumed on February 24,2022,and concluded on March 4,2022.
