Northern Ontario is a primary geographic and quasi-administrative region of the Canadian province of Ontario, the other primary region being Southern Ontario. Most of the core geographic region is located on part of the Superior Geological Province of the Canadian Shield, a vast rocky plateau located mainly north of Lake Huron, the French River, Lake Nipissing, and the Mattawa River. The statistical region extends south of the Mattawa River to include all of the District of Nipissing. The southern section of this district lies on part of the Grenville Geological Province of the Shield which occupies the transitional area between Northern and Southern Ontario. The extended federal and provincial quasi-administrative regions of Northern Ontario have their own boundaries even further south in the transitional area that vary according to their respective government policies and requirements. Ontario government departments and agencies such as the Growth Plan for Northern Ontario and the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation define Northern Ontario as all areas north of, and including, the districts of Parry Sound and Nipissing for political purposes, whilst the federal government, but not the provincial, also includes the district of Muskoka.
The Sudbury District is a district in Northeastern Ontario in the Canadian province of Ontario. It was created in 1894 from townships of eastern Algoma District and west Nipissing District.
The French River is a river in Central Ontario, Canada. It flows 110 kilometres (68 mi) from Lake Nipissing west to Georgian Bay. The river largely follows the boundary between the Parry Sound District and the Sudbury District, and in most contexts is considered the dividing line between Northern and Southern Ontario. The French River was designated a Canadian Heritage River in 1986.
Restoule is a community and designated place in geographic Patterson Township in the Centre Unorganized Part of Parry Sound District in Central Ontario, Canada. It is situated on the Restoule River between Commanda Lake, and Restoule Lake and is part of the Almaguin Highlands region.
The Opeongo River is a river in the Saint Lawrence River drainage basin in Nipissing District in northeastern Ontario, Canada. The river is entirely within Algonquin Provincial Park and Opeongo River Provincial Park, except for a small portion around Victoria Lake, and is a left tributary of the Madawaska River.
Wanup is a dispersed rural community and unincorporated place in the geographic township of Dill in the southeast of the city of Greater Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. Wanup became part of Greater Sudbury on January 1, 2001, when that city was created by amalgamating the former Regional Municipality of Sudbury, to which the townships of Dill and Cleland were added.
French River, also known as Rivière-des-Français, is a municipality in the Canadian province of Ontario, in the Sudbury District. The municipality had a population of 2,662 in the Canada 2016 Census. It was formed in 1999 through the merger of the Township of Cosby, Mason and Martland and surrounding unincorporated portions of the Unorganized North Sudbury District. It was named after the French River, which flows through the municipality.
The Barron River is a river in the Saint Lawrence River drainage basin in Nipissing District and Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada. It flows from Clemow Lake in northern Algonquin Provincial Park and joins the Petawawa River, whose southern branch it forms, in the municipality of Laurentian Hills, near the municipality of Petawawa.
The Murdock River is a river in Sudbury District in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. It is in the Lake Huron drainage basin and is a right tributary of the French River.
Nipissing is an incorporated (political) township in Parry Sound District in Central Ontario, Canada. It is on Lake Nipissing and is part of the Almaguin Highlands region. Nipissing was surveyed between 1874 and 1881, and was incorporated in 1888. Among the first settlers in the area were the Chapman and Beatty families. Nipissing Township annexed Gurd Township in 1970. The township also contains a community named Nipissing, which is located on the South River near Chapman's Landing, on the South Bay of Lake Nipissing. The township administrative offices are located in Nipissing.

Callander Bay is a bay at the extreme east of Lake Nipissing in the municipality of Callander, Parry Sound District, Ontario, Canada. It is approximately four kilometres (2.5 mi) in diameter. The community of Callander is located on its east side.
Girdwood is a railway point and unincorporated place in geographic Atkinson Township in the Unorganized North Part of Algoma District in northeastern Ontario, Canada. It lies on the Canadian Pacific Railway transcontinental main line between the settlements of Amyot on the line 13.5 kilometres (8.4 mi) to the west northwest and Ryerson on the line 4 kilometres (2 mi) to the northeast. Via Rail provides services to Girdwood railway station with the Sudbury – White River train once daily in each direction. Girdwood is adjacent to Tripoli Creek, a tributary of the Magpie River.
The Wolf River is a river in the municipality of French River, Sudbury District in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. It is in the Great Lakes Basin and is a right tributary of the Wolseley River.
Rabbit Lake is a small lake in the municipality of West Nipissing, Nipissing District in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. It is part of the Great Lakes Basin and lies in geographic Latchford Township. The lake flows via an unnamed creek through Number Two Lake to Number One Lake, which empties via Number One Creek to the West Bay of Lake Nipissing, and then via the French River to Lake Huron.
Rabbit Lake is a small lake in the municipality of Markstay-Warren, Sudbury District in Northeastern Ontario, Canada. It is part of the Great Lakes Basin, is in geographic Awrey Township, and is located 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) southwest of Ontario Highway 17 near the community of Markstay. The lake exits at the northeast via an unnamed creek, then flows via the Veuve River, Lake Nipissing and the French River to Georgian Bay on Lake Huron.
