Women's Tales is an ongoing short film anthology series created by fashion brand Miu Miu. Aside from the stipulation that the films use Miu Miu clothing the all female directors are given free rein to create their films. Miu Miu has commissioned two films a year since 2011, one for their summer collection and one for the winter collection.
Since 2012, all of the winter collection films have had their world premiere at the Venice Days section of the Venice International Film Festival. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] The summer collection films, which typically premiere during the New York Fashion Week in February, are shown there as well. Miu Miu is a so-called "creative partner", i.e. sponsor, of Venice Days. [7]
The first film, Zoe Cassavetes' The Powder Room premiered online in late January 2011. [8] The series' second installment, Lucrecia Martel's Muta, premiered at an invitation-only screening at a Beverly Hills mansion and online in July 2011. [9] [10]
In February 2012, the third film, Giada Colagrande's The Woman Dress, was screened during the New York Fashion Week and made available online. [11] Massy Tadjedin's It's Getting Late, number four in the series, had its world premiere at the Venice Days sidebar of the 69th Venice International Film Festival where all four films from the series were screened together for the first time. The fifth film, Ava DuVernay's The Door, premiered online in February 2013. [13] The film was later shown at the 70th Venice International Film Festival along with Le donne della Vucciria by Palestinian actress and director Hiam Abbas. [14]
In 2015, Agnès Varda's film Les 3 boutons premiered at the 72nd Venice International Film Festival.
In 2020 Miu Miu offered limited edition t-shirts printed with still from the films. [15]

Lucrecia Martel is an Argentine film director, screenwriter and producer whose feature films have frequented Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Toronto, and many other international film festivals. Film scholar Paul Julian Smith wrote in 2015 that she is "arguably the most critically acclaimed auteur in Spanish-language art cinema outside Latin America" and that her "transnational auteurism and demanding features have earned her a hard-won reputation in the world art cinema festival circuit". Similarly, film scholar Haden Guest has called her "one of the most prodigiously talented filmmakers in contemporary world cinema", and film scholar David Oubiña has called her body of work a "rare perfection". In April 2018, Vogue called her "one of the greatest directors in the world right now".

Last Night is a 2010 romantic drama film that was written and directed by Massy Tadjedin, her directorial debut. The film follows married couple Joanna and Michael Reed, who are tempted by different forms of infidelity when they spend a night apart following a fight. Joanna is emotionally drawn to her ex-boyfriend Alex Mann while Michael is physically attracted to his co-worker Laura Nunez. The cast includes Griffin Dunne, Daniel Eric Gold, Anson Mount, Stephanie Romanov, Scott Adsit, Justine Cotsonas, and Chriselle Almeida. Last Night was produced by Entertainment One in association with the Gaumont Film Company, and deals with questions about emotional and physical infidelity.
Black women filmmakers have made contributions throughout the history of film. According to Nsenga Burton, writer for The Root, "the film industry remains overwhelmingly white and male. In 2020, 74.6 percent of movie directors of theatrical films were white, showing a small decrease from the previous year. In terms of representation, 25.4 percent of film directors were of ethnic minority in 2020. Of the 25.4 percent of minority filmmakers, a small percentage was female.

Isabel Sandoval is a Filipino filmmaker and actress who lives in the United States. She directed the films Señorita (2011), Aparisyon (2012) and Lingua Franca (2019). She also directed a short film called Shangri-La (2021) as part of the Miu Miu's Women's Tales series of female-directed short films commissioned by the fashion brand.
Origin is a 2021 and 2022 American biographical drama film written and directed by Ava DuVernay. It is based on the life of Isabel Wilkerson, played by Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, as she writes the book Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents. Over the course of the film, Wilkerson travels throughout Germany, India, and the United States to research the caste systems in each country's history.
