The Women's Hockey Champions Challenge I was an international field hockey tournament, played every two years. It was introduced in 2002 by the International Hockey Federation in order to broaden hockey's competitive base at world level. The Champions Challenge was replaced by the Women's FIH Hockey World League in 2014 after eight editions. [1]

International Hockey Federation

The Fédération Internationale de Hockey, commonly known by the acronym FIH, is the international governing body of field hockey and indoor field hockey. Its headquarters are in Lausanne, Switzerland and the president is Dr Narinder Dhruv Batra. FIH is responsible for field hockey's major international tournaments, notably the World Cup.

Scotland recently participated in the inaugural season of the FIH Hockey World League, but were knocked out in round 2, failing to qualify for the 2014 Hockey World Cup in The Hague, Netherlands. As of November 2015 they are seventeenth in the FIH outdoor world rankings.

Kayla Marie Whitelock is a New Zealand field hockey player, and former captain of the New Zealand women's national field hockey team. She has competed in four Olympic Games, three Commonwealth Games and two Hockey World Cups. She was named on the FIH's All-Star Team in 2010 and was Hockey New Zealand's player of the year in 2012.

Ireland mens national field hockey team

The Ireland men's national field hockey team is organised by Hockey Ireland and represents both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland in international men's field hockey competitions, including the Summer Olympics, the Men's Hockey World Cup and the EuroHockey Nations Championship. They have previously competed in the Men's Intercontinental Cup, the Hockey Champions Challenge, the Men's FIH Hockey World League and the FIH Hockey Series. On 26 January 1895 Ireland played in the first ever international field hockey match when they defeated Wales 3–0 in Rhyl. Ireland were finalists and silver medallists at the 1908 Summer Olympics. The Spain women's national field hockey team represents Spain in the international field hockey competitions. The team won the gold medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics at their first ever Olympic appearance in front of their home crowd in Terrassa, coached at the time by José Manuel Brasa.

Field hockey at the 2016 Summer Olympics

Field hockey at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro took place from 6 to 19 August at the Olympic Hockey Centre in Deodoro. The competition had instituted several changes in the format and structure from the 2012 Summer Olympics. Twenty-four teams competed in the tournament.

2014 Womens Hockey Champions Trophy

The 2014 Women's Hockey Champions Trophy was the 21st edition of the Hockey Champions Trophy for women. It was held from 29 November to 7 December 2014 in Mendoza, Argentina. From this year on the tournament began to be held biennially due to the introduction of the Hockey World League, returning to its original format changed in 1999.

A penalty shootout is a method used in field hockey to decide which team progresses to the next stage of a tournament following a tied game. Two methods have been used: the original penalty stroke competition is a best-of-five penalty strokes with sudden death if scores were level after five strokes. An alternate penalty shoot-out competition was introduced at major tournaments in 2011. Sometimes known as a penalty shuffle, the method is similar to penalty shots in ice hockey and consists of one-on-ones between an attacking player and a goalkeeper. Up to 2013, up to two 7.5-minute golden goal periods were played first; that method ceased after.
