Field hockey at the South American Games was first introduced to the South American Games as a men's and women's tournament at the 2006 Games.
After being introduced in the 2006 South American Games, the field hockey tournament was absent at the 2010 South American Games, but returned in 2014. The tournament often serves as a qualification tournament for the field hockey event at the Pan American Games.
In the men's competition, Argentina are the most successful national team, having won gold at every edition of the tournament. [1] The Argentine women's team is also the most successful national team in the women's competition, also having won gold at every edition until 2022, when Chile became the first nation other than Argentina to win the gold medal. [2]

The field hockey tournament at the 2003 Pan American Games was held in the Santo Domingo Stadium, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic from August 1–17, 2003. It served as a qualification tournament for the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. First place received a ticket for the Olympic tournament. The men competed for the tenth time at the Pan Americans, the women for the fifth time.

The field Hockey competition at the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games was held in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico. The men's tournament was scheduled to be held from July 22–31, 2010, with the women's tournament finishing one day earlier, at the Parque Yldefonso Solá Morales in Caguas. The top two teams in each tournament qualified to compete at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
